JEN WOODARD DIRECTOR ANIMAL CONTROL DEPARTMENT 201 S. Mt. Vernon Avenue Bakersfield, CA 93307 (661) 321-3000 Program Highlights December 5, 2012 ANIMAL CONTROL DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 2012 Volunteers donated approximately 340.5 hours in November in the areas of shelter office support, adoption center assistance, grooming assistance, and kennel cleaning assistance. For the first time volunteers were invited to help with daily dog and cat cleaning on Sundays and at any time during the weeks, working hand in hand with staff. The Happy Kern Cats PetSmart Charities Grant to fund free spaying/neutering of feral and free-roaming cats in the targeted 93306 area continued with two more successful clinics in November. Due to the continued dedication and devotion of our volunteer and community partners, a total of 615 cats have been spayed and neutered in our second year of the grant, with 130 in November. One date has been scheduled for December due to the holiday schedule. January and February 2013 dates are being booked. The Department participated in the Oildale Pet Festival with an informational booth, free microchipping to the public and also provided licenses for sale for dog owners. 22 microchips were implanted and 5 licenses were sold. An Animal Control Officer attended the Virginia Park Fair where information was provided to residents regarding responsible pet ownership and agency information. Several adoptable dogs were also showcased and free microchips were offered to residents. Two dogs were adopted and 19 microchips were implanted. The Marketing & Promotions Associate was a guest on KERN Radio Newstalk 1180 where information was provided to the listening audience about the free microchipping program available through the Department. The Department partnered with AngelDogs Foundation, a mobile spay/neuter organization, and Supervisor McQuiston to host 2 spay/neuter events in Lake Isabella for Kern River Valley residents. A total of 88 surgeries and 95 licenses were issued/renewed over 2 days. The Department provided an educational presentation to the after school program at Colonel Howard Nichols School. Two sessions were offered and over 100 students received information regarding responsible pet ownership and agency information. Rescue staff made six trips to transport animals to San Francisco/Sacramento area, Marin, San Diego, Castaic and Stockton. Approximately 360 animals received new homes due to the transports by rescue staff this month. Two successful low-cost vaccination and licensing clinics were held in Lost Hills and Bakersfield (Beale Park). 272 licenses, 394 Rabies vaccinations, of which 182 were County and 212 were City and 233 DHPP vaccinations were administered at these clinics. A total of 226 free microchips were implanted during these 2 vaccine clinics.

We have continued to provide free microchips for all pet owners; from October 23, 2012 December 3, 2012 we have implanted a total of 449 microchips to County and City residents. We continue our Home 4 the Holidays adoption promotion, which started November 1 st, 2012 and continues through December. All dogs are just $20 to adopt and cats are $10. We are also continuing $5 Fridays in December due to their popularity with the public and drastic increase in adoptions due to the adoption incentive. We have done 246 adoptions in November 2012, compared to just 172 adoptions in November 2011.
