We dedicate this book to Ms. Pyle because she s a good teacher, she lets us make stuff, she teaches us how to read, she reads us good books like Over in the Meadow or How They made the American Flag, and she lets us have recess and time to do whatever we want. Our class has 3 good teachers and we have many good friends. Ava, Vivian and Justen

How we made this book One day, Ms. Pyle said, Does anyone know what hibernation means? Some of us did. It means that animals sleep in the winter during the day or night. Hibernating animals usually hide from the cold in a den, a burrow, or a hollow log for protection and shelter. So we made a brainstorm list of all the animals we thought might hibernate. We chose an animal to study because we liked the way they looked or because their babies were really cute. We figured out how to draw them. Then we drew them on colored construction paper. We cut them out and organized the pieces. We glued them down on blue paper and added wallpaper patterns that looked like where they would hibernate.

Black Widow When it gets cold, black widow spiders go underground where it is warmer. They have a red mark on their stomach. They have a web sprayer They poison people. If you want to kill them, they can t poison your shoe. Asher

Rabbit Some rabbits have a white tail. They hibernate under the ground. They have big ears and the inside of their ears are black. Annabelle

Black Bear Bears are fat. They have little ears. Their claws are long. They hibernate in a cave. Their feet are different in size. Jack

Bats Bats fly through the night. They eat mosquitos. Little brown bats hibernate in trees. Their wings are like stretched out skin. One bat, a vampire bat, eats blood. Most bats hibernate in caves. Archer

Bobcats Bobcats hibernate in caves or hollow logs. They make bear footprints. They are meat eaters. They have hair on the tips of their ears. Bobcats have sharp teeth. Justen

Ladybugs Ladybugs eat leaves and they live underground. Sometimes they live on top of the ground. They hibernate underground in the winter. They are red with black spots. They have 6 legs. Caitie

Skunks Skunks are nocturnal. They lift up their tail to spray and have very smelly spray that makes you want to take off your clothes and bury them in the ground. Tomato juice helps get the smell out. They live in rotted logs. They hibernate inside little hidey-holes in large trees. They have black and white stripes. Vivian

Slider Turtle He lives in the water in ponds. He swims all night. He hibernates. Anderson

Snail He has a shell on his back. He has tentacles. He has a spot to breathe and eats plants. He hibernates underground. Madden

Black Rat Snakes Black Rat Snakes don t like people touching them. They hiss as a warning if you are too close. They hibernate in the winter in snake holes. Dresden

Porcupine Porcupine hairs are quills. They stick straight out. They hibernate in the woods. They eat plants. Their hands and feet are a different size and they have long nails. Gloryia

Red Fox She hibernates underground in her den in the winter. When spring comes, the new babies are born. Then she feeds her babies. Sometimes the baby foxes sleep. The mother teaches them how to hunt for food like their mom. Ava

Prairie Dog The prairie dog digs and makes mazes underground so other animals can t get to his nest. They dig inside mountains and flat ground. They hibernate in their nest. They make nests out of sticks. Matthew

Wasp The wasp lays eggs. The wasp flies with four wings. He hibernates and sleeps in leaves. He tries to get close to people and sting them. Nick

Whip-Poor-Will This bird hibernates in the rocks. He makes his nest in a bush or grass. Angie

Wood Frogs Wood Frogs like to croak. Rrrrrribit. They start as tadpoles and they turn into big frogs. They like to jump. They like to hibernate in mud and sand during the cold winter. Anna

Rattlesnake Rattlesnakes shake their rattles by shaking their tails. They have yellow, white and black spots on them. They have a tiny nose. They go under the ground to hibernate in the winter. Kaylee

Groundhogs They go into big dark holes to be safe to sleep. They hibernate in these holes. They gather sticks to block the hole so nothing can get them. Max

Copperheads Copperheads blend into grass and weeds. They live in Virginia. They like the wet, waterland. They re poisonous. If they bite you, you could die. They live on land but like to swim. Deigo

Ants Ants are so very amazing. They go underground to hibernate. They have 6 legs and 2 antennas. They live with other ants. Ants bite. Melissa
