President / Show Managers Message This year s show is unique in that it is a transition from our previous location. It is only possible through the efforts over the years of a lot of individual cage bird fanciers whose combined interest has made the hobby and club a viable entity. There have been a number of people who have come and gone but all have put a mark on the development of the club to make it what it has become today. Our show has become one of the main shows in Canada to attend and compete in. We have always had top-notch judges from Canada, USA and Europe to evaluate our birds and it is because of this that we have the high caliber of birds available for competition. The judges this year are from British Columbia and Ontario. Our show sets a standard that has been repeated by other clubs both here and in the USA. It is something that every member should be proud of. I look forward to meeting everyone at the show this year in a time of fellowship and for a time to exchange ideas and see what the result of another breeding year brings to the show bench. I ask that you have fun and take the time to congratulate the individuals with the best bird in each division. May the best birds win. A big thank you to everyone who will be participating and attending our show this year. Thanks to the Western Canadian Budgerigar Association for supporting our show. I t is great to have the clubs supporting each other. Jay Bunker, Show Manager Special Thanks Thanks from the to John Willis, Jeremy Faria and Jay Bunker for the donations made towards the trophy awards for this year s event. 2017 Executive - President:... Brian Johannson Colour and Type Canary Judge I would like to thank the Northern Alberta Cage Bird Assoc. for inviting myself to judge in this year s show. At the show, I look forward to meeting with all of you good people, we ll discuss the birds, the show or the many other topics related to the bird world. Normally I do not like to tell tales about myself, however. For over forty years I have been active in the world of birds in one form or another. I started as a young boy in a partnership keeping Pigeons. Then as a young man I was into Foreign Birds including European Finches and Zebra Finches. In a Partnership with my father-in-law, we won Best Zebra Finch and Best Foreign Pair in the 1973 National Show in Vancouver. Shortly after that I tried my hand at creating Mules between my European Finches and Gloster Canaries. I have also kept, bred, and successful shown members of the Parrot families. In 1975, I started my love with the canary. I have kept, bred, and exhibited Colour Canaries, Yorkshires, Lancashires, Norwich, Scot fancy, Fife, Glosters, and Borders. Currently, my aviary has the breeds of Borders, Fife, and Glosters and Non- Red Colour-bred Canaries. I have been successful on the Show Bench both in Canada and the USA for all three types, having won Best of Breeds as well as Best in Shows. I am currently a Canadian National Judge for the Avicultural Advancement Council of Canada. I have been honoured to judge some of the bigger shows in Florida, Los Angeles, American National in Chicago, as well as judging in Boston later this year. 13

John Zerafa Budgerigar, Finch, Hookbill Judge While I was only six years old when my parents immigrated to Canada from Malta, I believe that those formative years in Malta had a profound influence on my interest in animals and especially birds. I started out breeding canaries in 1960 when I was 12 years old, but soon ventured into softbilled birds and hummingbirds in the early 70's when importing birds had no complications, and when my wife Janice and I lived in an apartment in Scarborough, Ontario in Canada. I also bred fawn pied and normal pied Zebra Finches at that time as the noise level was quite low with these birds and they could be bred in an apartment building without disturbing the other tenants. I joined my first club, the Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society of Canada, in 1969 and started to judge foreign birds in 1975. In 1976, after five years of marriage, my wife Janice and I built our dream home, east of Toronto, near Colborne, Ontario and I was soon into exhibition budgerigars and hookbills, as I no longer had to worry about the possibility of neighbours complaining. It was 1982 when I started to judge budgerigars. At present in 2017, as a champion breeder, exhibitor and judge, my interests are still varied with an interest in budgerigars, Zebra Finches, British Birds and hookbills. I was the first Canadian correspondent for the international budgerigar publication, Budgerigar World, from England, when it started up in 1982. I also published a magazine for Canadian budgerigar fanciers, first in the early 1980's and then again in the late 1990's. Between 1969 and 1987, I held most executive positions with the Budgerigar & Foreign Bird Society and the Dominion Budgerigar Society. From 1987 to 2010 I was active with the Durham Avicultural Society, a club which I still consider my home club. While I have held the position of President and Bulletin Editor over the years, my main responsibility has been as Show Manager for most years and for no less than three Canadian National Shows. In 2003 the BFBS made me an honorary director in recognition for many years of service. In 2008, the Durham Avicultural Society granted me a Life Membership in recognition of my past services to the Society. 14

Best wishes to a successful show!
