VB Animal Care & Adptin Center & VB Animal Enfrcement Team 2014 Accmplishments

Backgrund In December 2011 the Animal Care and Adptin Center and Animal Enfrcement Team transitined t a new state f the art facility lcated n Birdneck Rad. The new physical space immediately imprved cnditins bth pertaining t the wrking climate as well as fr the quality f husing fr sheltered animals. In additin t the physical changes that were immediately bvius, many peratinal changes and initiatives ccurred and have since cntinued t imprve the lives f shelter animals, prmte awareness, impact release rates/adptin rates, and t carve a psitive niche in the cmmunity fr the Animal Care and Adptin Center. The Animal Enfrcement Team has cntinued t prvide the cmmunity with excellent respnse t its animal-related needs. Tgether, bth entities wrk t prvide the City f Virginia Beach hlistic animal services.

Adptin Statistics Adptin Rates: Adptin Rates have been n the rise ver the last few years. Here is where we have been and where we are nw. 2012 Year t Date Ttals INTAKE RTO ADOPTED TRNSFER* TRNSFER EUTH EUTH ADPTION SPCA AGG/ILL* OTHER RATE DOGS 3518 1705 1146 259 6 389 0 99% CATS 3382 210 839 76 156 1793 245 73% OTHER 400 9 254 70 1 23 3 86% 2013 Year t Date Ttals INTAKE RTO ADOPTED TRNSFER* TRNSFER EUTH EUTH ADPTION SPCA AGG/ILL* OTHER RATE DOGS 3613 1909 1231 198 2 249 0 98% CATS 3031 198 981 89 127 1461 162 85% OTHER 280 10 199 33 0 12 7 88% 2014 Year t Date Ttals INTAKE RTO ADOPTED TRNSFER* TRNSFER EUTH EUTH ADPTION SPCA AGG/ILL* OTHER RATE DOGS 3531 1901 1193 170 2 305 0 103% CATS 2944 190 1177 127 172 1212 32 95% OTHER 382 12 272 41 0 38 1 93% What d the numbers mean? This tells us hw successful we have been adpting ut animals that are able t be adpted. Able meaning animals whse wners have nt reclaimed, that have nt been transferred t ther facilities and wh are medically and behavirally apprpriate t send back int the cmmunity. **Adptin rate is based n the fllwing frmula: Ttal numbers f animals by categry (dgs and cats) reduced by the number f animals returned t their wner r turned ver t ther rescue agencies reduced by the number f animals determined t be nn-adptable.** Frmula des nt accunt fr animals still n-site thus with n final dispsitin.

Live Release Rate (LRR) Statistics 2012 INTAKE RTO ADOPTED TRNSFERRED EUTH LRR DOGS 3518 1705 1146 265 389 89% CATS 3382 210 839 232 2038 39% OTHER 400 9 254 90 26 93% ALL SPECIES 7300 1924 2239 587 2453 66% 2013 INTAKE RTO ADOPTED TRNSFERRED EUTH LRR DOGS 3613 1909 1231 200 249 93% CATS 3031 198 981 216 1623 46% OTHER 280 10 199 33 19 93% ALL SPECIES 6924 2117 2411 449 1891 72% 2014 INTAKE RTO ADOPTED TRNSFERRED EUTH LRR DOGS 3531 1901 1193 172 305 91% CATS 2944 190 1177 299 1244 57% OTHER 382 12 272 41 39 89% ALL SPECIES 6857 2103 2642 512 1588 77% What exactly des d the numbers mean? This is the percentage f animals that we were successful in re-placing back int the cmmunity The LRR is calculated by dividing ttal live utcmes (adptins, utging transfers, return t wner/guardian) by ttal utcmes (ttal live utcmes plus euthanasia nt including wner/guardian requested euthanasia which were Unhealthy & Untreatable r died/lst in shelter/care).

At what pint is a shelter cnsidered n-kill Accrding t the N-Kill Advcacy Center a Save Rate (Live Release Rate-LRR) f 90% is cnsidered N-Kill. If yu lk at ur LRR fr K9s fr 2014 yu will see we are at 91% (secnd cnsecutive year at abve the 90% threshld) and fr cats we are at 57% (11% increase ver 2013). We still have plenty f wrk t d, thugh we are well n ur way with a 77% LRR verall!

The term N-Kill Means different things t different peple/rganizatins. At VBACAC we believe that this term, thugh becming mre frequently utilized in the sheltering cmmunity, is distasteful and incngruent with ur rganizatinal missin. There are times when humane euthanasia is apprpriate and it is ur jb t ensure that animals in ur care have quality f life and that the safety f ur cmmunity remains paramunt in ur decisin-making. The term kill in any cntext implies an actin ther than lawful, humane, cmpassinate euthanasia, thus this is a term that we at VBACAC d nt embrace. HOWEVER VBACAC is and will always remain an pen-admissin shelter and it is ur gal t maximize Live Release (LR) and wrk t ur fullest ptential in a respnsible manner s as t preserve quality f life. It is ur gal t imprve with each passing year and believe that we can and will reach a 90% r greater LRR fr each species.

2014 Initiatives t Increase Quality Live Release Cntinued expansin f fster prgram (87 parents in 2013 t 100 in 2014) Enhanced efficiency f fster prgram (Animal were in/ut fster care 738 times in 2014) Cntinued use/cntact f rescue rganizatins (15% increase in use f rescues ver 2013) Cntinue t utilize a Special Events Team t increase f marketing and scial netwrking f scheduled events; new this year Special Events planning training ffered by Beach Events Secnd year f ur Barn Cat Prgram t place cats, that wuld be inapprpriate fr in-hme living, int an envirnment where they can be successful. 2014 saw a 100% increase in barn cat adptins (10 adptins in 2013, 20 in 2014) Cntinued use/partnership with adult and yuth vlunteers t assist with animal enrichment, scializatin, and custmer service (vlunteer stats are up ver 2013 see slide 9) Cntinued staff expectatin/accuntability f ZERO valid custmer service cmplaints Cntinued adptin fllw-up phne calls/assistance with any identified behaviral issues (apprximately 2600 calls) Rutine training classes ffered t vlunteers: 12 curse titles with apprximately 800 vlunteer training hurs prvided (vlunteer rientatin, caretaking, K-9 handling basic and advanced, adptin cunseling, adptin fllw-up, custmer service, feline handling 2 curses, greeter/shelter guide, grming, pet prtal) Apprximately 40 speaking engagements and shelter turs prvided t varius grups thrughut 2014 Arrwhead Elementary Kempsriver Wmen s Club Atria Assisted Living Citizens Plice Academy/Senir Citizens Plice Academy 4 Girl Scut Turs
