In my view, our training classes are the single most important thing we offer as a club. These classes are the core of our club. They are the first introduction many people have to basic dog training, and they provide others with the training that lures them into more and more classes and into the sport of dog competition. It takes an incredible number of people to instruct and assist the many classes we offer. Some of our instructors, like Jean Ervin, Bev Stewart and Beth Clark, have been honored with President's Awards in the past. For 2014, I would like to honor three women who teach week in and week out, session after session, year after year. They are Bonnie Davis, Diane Overstreet, and Karen Pilkay. On a personal note, these three women were my first contacts with the teaching program at NDTC as I took my little Uppie to Bonnie's heeling class and a couple of her sisters to Karen's conformation class long before I joined the club. It was while I was in one of Diane's classes that she encouraged me to join the club. Congratulations, and Thank You! March 2015 Tracking Dog Excellent Trial NDTCs TDX trial took place on February 8, 2014 with 3 entries and 2 finishers. The weather held out and was cool but dry so conditions were excellent for our entrants. Club member Wendy Boehme earned a new TDX title with her Bernese Mountain Dog CH PACH2 Prariefire s Myles of Style CDX, TD, RE, PAX2, T2BP, NDD and Jean-Marie Higginbotham travelled to our trial from Carrollton, TX with her Cocker Spaniel CH WildWest Power Play, TC, NA, AXJ, XF. Our third entrant, Jane Mohr with one of her Cocker Spaniels put in a very good showing for her girl s first try at a TDX course. A great thanks goes out to the trial committee and volunteers who made this outing a success: trial chair Elizabeth Mask, trial secretary Randee White, chief track layer John White, chief crosstrack layer Cheryl Tisdale, hospitality coordinator extraordinaire Allison Burnidge, and of course our tracking coordinator Bev Stewart. We also had several new volunteers who are interested in tracking with their dogs out this year, so a great thank you to them. Let s hope we see you in a TDX trial soon.
BD and her Kees By Bonnie Davis Back in the late 70s I saw a group of people in a school yard working their dogs in obedience. It stuck a chord, and I filed that thought away for the future. Fast forward to 1993, when I got my first Keeshond, Django (BD's Django Meinhaart, UD RE). I knew I could become involved in the sport of Obedience with him, since he was a purebred dog, so as soon as I could I got him into a class. It just happened to be at NDTC, and was a 4- week puppy class. My teacher was Tammy Haney. We took some classes from a private trainer and he got his CGC (much to the surprise of the teacher, I think). He later earned his CD, CDX and Utility Dog titles. He earned Obedience Trial Championship points and that earned us a trip to the 2002 AKC Obedience Invitational in Chicago. Vandys Flak came to live with us in early 1997. She earned her CD, but I lost her way before her time. I was able to get Disco, Laser Stayn Live thru Trumpet from Beth Blankenship. She was three when I got her, and earned her UDX and RE (and a couple of invitations to the NOI). My current dogs are Sizzle (CH Trumpet's Too Darn Hot, CDX, VER, BN) and Caper, who is 18 months old and hasn't started working on titles yet. I became a member of NDTC in the late 90s, and began assisting and teaching. The Heeling Class was started by Cheryl Brown sometime after we moved to our present location. Jean Ervin and I agreed to take it over from Cheryl when she was ready to pass it on, and we did it together for awhile, until Jean got busy teaching other classes, so I took it on. I've been responsible for it ever since. Bonnie Davis and Sizzle President s Award Announcement Bonnie Davis acquired Django, her first Keeshond puppy, in 1993 and enrolled in a puppy class at NDTC. A couple of years later, she joined the club and began assisting and then teaching. Bonnie and her Keeshonds have become familiar sights at NDTC and at obedience trials thought the southeast. She earned a UD with that first puppy and later a UDX with Disco. She is currently training Sizzle (who has her CDX) and Caper (who is just getting started). More importantly to the rest of us, Bonnie has been teaching the Heeling Class, one of our most popular classes, for over ten years. She takes a brief break in the summer, but at all other times of the year you can find her at our building on Wednesday nights at 7:00. For the past two years, in addition to teaching, Bonnie has given even more of her time to NDTC as she has served as Property Manager. Thank you, Bonnie!
Anatomy of a Training Devotee By Diane Overstreet I have been a member of NDTC for approximately 18 years and have been training and/or competing with dogs for 17 plus years. I compete in agility, rally, obedience, conformation, lure coursing, along with a little herding, nosework, tracking and have recently tried barn hunt. I have been assisting or teaching classes at NDTC for those 18 years and teaching agility classes at Nashville Dog Training Club for approximately 10 years and coordinating the Agility Program. I'm also an AKC CGC Evaluator. I presently own (or I m owned by) 3 papillons, Hunter, Pierre and Shelley and two Pyrenean Shepherds, Jacques and Josette (our newest member of the family). Diane Overstreet and her pack I have also helped with trials and been on committees during these years. Agility is my favorite dog sport however I enjoy doing anything with the dogs and with the dog community. Diane s vast accumulation of titles includes: CH MACH3 Gitan Roi De Bien-Aime CD BN RAE MXG MJS2 XF T2B CAA CGCA, Jacques, Pyrenean Shepherd MACH7 PACH2 Rosebud Hunter's Moon Dancer BN RAE MXG2 MJC2 MXP5 MXPS MJP6 MJPS PAX2 OF CGC, Hunter, Papillon Also 2013 AKC Agility Nationals, 3rd place, 4" preferred class and won High in Trial at the Papillon Natiionals 2008. MACH Marelen Primavera Nenar BN RE MXS MJS NF CGC, Shelley, Papillon President s Award Announcement Diane Overstreet has been the backbone of our agility program since 2004. She not only teaches a class every single session, but she oversees the entire agility class program. NDTC now offers three levels of agility classes, thanks to Diane and the wonderful instructors she recruits. This past summer she organized a series of agility seminars that were very popular and well attended. Diane's papillons (MACH 7 PACH 2 Hunter, MACH 4 Pierre, and MACH Shelley) are as familiar to us as Bonnie's Keeshonds, but she has recently added Pyrenean Shepherds to her family of dogs (CH MACH 3 Jacques and Josette). While her primary competitive interest has been agility, she has also earned obedience and rally titles. And every Monday night, you can find her at NDTC. Thank you, Diane! A Love for Showing Dogs By Karen Pilkay I obtained my first Siberian Husky in 1983, my second in 1984 and attended my first training class at NDTC in 1986 or 1987. I served as recording secretary for NDTC during the late 80 s and property chair in the early 90 s. I have taught puppy classes, level 1 and level 2 obedience in the past. More recently, I have taught the conformation classes for the past several years. Since obtaining my first dog in 1983, I trained and showed a Cocker Spaniel to his CD title, several of my Siberian Huskies to their CD titles, and placed CGC titles on several other dogs. I have also trained and shown several Siberian Huskies and a couple of Belgian Sheepdogs to their AKC Championships. I have been a CGC Evaluator for AKC since the beginning of the program. I enjoy sharing my knowledge about dogs with people that are new to the dog show world and watching them enjoy their success in the show ring. Karen Pilkay and Cruz President s Award Announcement Karen Pilkay is also a constant presence at NDTC. Karen attended her first class at NDTC in the 1986 or 87 and served on the board in the late 1980 s and early 1990 s. She has taught puppy class as well as level 1 and level 2 obedience classes. Karen has been a CGC evaluator since the AKC launched the program. She earned her first CD on a Cocker Spaniel and has also earned that title on several of her Siberian Huskies. She personally has handled several Siberians and Belgian Sheepdogs to their AKC breed championships. She shares her experience in the conformation ring with us every Monday night. Thank you, Karen!
Tracking Dog Excellent Trial From Ken Barna, our tracking judge at the TDX on Feb. 8, 2015 Friends: Thank you again for inviting me to judge your TDX test. I always enjoy coming to Nashville and working with your club. You don't know how lucky you are to have such an experienced and supportive group! John White: you did an excellent job as a rookie Chief Tracklayer; Randee White: I appreciate your efforts as Test Secretary - always a thankless job; Cheryl Tisdale: it was a luxury not to have to worry about crosstracks going in correctly; and Liz Mask: you are the consummate hostess - from the dinners to the welcome bags, thank you so much! I also really enjoy working your site. The "X" in TDX stands for "excellent" and the Cheatham site presents the right amount of challenges for exhibitors, dogs, and judges alike. Compared to other TDX sites, it is not particularly difficult for our tracklayers and crosstrack layers, while giving the judges plenty of opportunity to design challenging and fair TDX tracks. Please keep me on your list for future tests! Best regards and happy tracking!
