Purina Announces Enhanced Recipe of Flock Raiser Crumbles Shoreview, Minn. [March 18, 2015] Purina Animal Nutrition introduces an enhanced formula of Purina Flock Raiser Crumbles. Formulated to meet the needs of meat birds, mixed flocks and show birds, this complete feed now includes prebiotics, probiotics and yeast as well as the extra energy needed for a healthy mixed flock. Meat birds, mixed flocks and show birds require different nutrients than birds raised only for egg laying," says Mikelle Roeder, Ph.D., a flock nutrition expert with Purina Animal Nutrition. Along with vitamins, minerals and ingredients for immunity, protein is especially important, because it supports healthy plumage, bird growth and contributes to overall meat quality. We recently updated the recipe of Purina Flock Raiser Crumbles to help flock raisers provide a balanced, complete feed to their meat birds, show birds, turkeys, ducks and geese, Roeder adds. This new formula supports healthy growth so you can best enjoy raising a mixed flock. New Purina Flock Raiser Crumbles includes: A simple vegetarian recipe made from freshly-ground North American grains Prebiotics, probiotics and yeast to support immune health Extra energy to support healthy plumage, bird growth and meat quality A balance of vitamins and minerals to support bone health and bird growth Feed Purina Flock Raiser Crumbles: to meat birds, ducks and geese as the sole ration from day one; to ducks and geese intended for egg laying from day 1 through week 18 and then transition to a highcalcium complete layer feed for those birds that are laying; to turkeys from week 8 until laying after feeding a gamebird starter feed. Purina Flock Raiser Crumbles is also formulated and recommended for non-laying adult birds. April 2015
APA NEWS April 2015 Thank you to everyone who renewed their dues. Unfortunately, I still have over 400 members whose dues expired on January 1, 2015. Don't forget, if your dues aren't current as of July 1, your points will be voided. If you are a club, your show report can't be processed if your dues aren't current. If you haven't received any notification from the office, please contact me. Sometimes addresses or club secretary's change and I don't get the updates. Now for the good news; in February, I processed 79 new members, which included 5 new clubs. It is nice to see there is still a lot of interest in exhibition poultry out there. The yearbook committee is hard at work, they have reached out to many new potential advertisers and the response has been good. This year's book looks to be bigger and better than last year. There will be quite a few new ads, not only from members but also suppliers. I hope that everyone who has promised an ad or article has already sent it. At last count, there were over 50 full color ads, which is a big increase from the 2014 book. The April News & Views should be in your hands by mid-april and I am still shipping 6 to 8 Standards each week. I will be attending the Dayton Fancy Feather Show in April and Southern Ohio Poultry Show late in May. If you want any merchandise delivered, just let me know, I will be happy to deliver it and save shipping. Time to get back to my desk and paperwork, hope to see you down the road. ABA Happenings April 2015 Let's add one more to the 2014 inductees to the level of Master Exhibitor and Master Breeder. Welcome Greg White/White & Morgan of North Carolina as a Master Breeder of White Japanese Bantams. This month, we will be digging out our paths and getting our bantams acclimated to the nice Spring weather. Boy has it been a long, cold winter but here we are fluffing our feathers and getting ready for another crop of Bantams. Hooray! Speaking of new bantams, there has been a surge in 2015 ABA Legbands and we are ready for you! We have just ordered a second batch to accommodate your breeding programs. If you haven't tried the ABA Legbands, it is time for you to consider it. These are seamless bands which are put on the growing youngster at about 6 weeks or a bit later depending on the breed. Once on, they are perfectly sized and carry a unique identifying number registered with the ABA. It also carries the year 2015 (15) which you will need as the bird matures. You will ALWAYS know the age of your birds. This is incredibly helpful in your breeding programs plus it is also very helpful when you are selling your birds. The size that you will need depends on your breed and the sex of the bird. A chart of these recommendations is listed in your ABA Bantam Standard as well as our website. If you are unsure of what size you will need, send me an email at bantamclub@gmail.com and I will be glad to send you a complete listing. For those who have bought birds at a show or auction, if the bird is wearing an ABA legband, you can contact the ABA office (bantamclub@gmail.com) and ask who the bands were originally sold to, simply by supplying us with the information which is easily legible on the band. This is also a big help when you are looking for breed stock and mating up your birds. 2015 YEAROOK. Time is running out and we would love to include your ad in SELL YOUR EXCESS BIRDS HERE This is 2 columns by 3.5 inches. There are no extra charges for a color picture or simple ad design. Louisiana Takes Precautionary Measures Against Avian Influenza New Case Confirmed in Arkansas March 12, 2015 Baton Rouge, La. (March 12, 2015) Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., said, In an effort to safeguard our commercial producers and backyard poultry enthusiasts, we ve increased our surveillance of poultry in the state. We are also enforcing all Louisiana Board of Animal Health entry regulations. Louisiana is taking precautionary measures following the recent confirmed presence of the highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza (AI) in commercial turkey flocks in these six states: Idaho, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon, Washington and most recently Arkansas. All poultry entering Louisiana from a state affected with AI must meet the following entry requirements: No live poultry or poultry products may enter Louisiana from an area designated as a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) infected zone until the official quarantine has been released. Poultry includes chickens, turkeys, quail, pheasants, peafowl, guineas, chukars and other partridge, grouse, ratites and domestic ducks. Poultry products include hatching eggs, chicks, poults, table eggs, litter, and offal, but do not include processed poultry meat for human consumption. All poultry entering Louisiana must originate from a National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) AI clean flock or must be tested negative for AI within 7 days of entry (by antibody or antigen capture methodologies recognized by NPIP). All poultry shipments into Louisiana must be accompanied by an Interstate Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (ICVI) and proof of NPIP certification for Salmonella Pullorum/Typhoid (P/T) clean status with NPIP Form 9-2 or NPIP negative testing within 30 days of entry ICVI must state origin of shipment Late Wednesday, the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission confirmed the infection of H5N2 AI in a commercial turkey flock in northern Arkansas. The flock is currently quarantined. The Arkansas Livestock & Poultry Commission will follow strict U.S. Department of Agriculture protocols to depopulate the affected flock so that no affected birds will enter the food supply. Additionally, surveillance and testing procedures will be implemented at properties near the affected facility to insure that the virus has not spread. The virus is not known to cause disease in humans. These virus strains can travel in wild birds without them appearing sick. People should avoid contact with sick/dead poultry or wildlife. If contact occurs, wash your hands with soap and water and change clothing before having any contact with healthy domestic poultry and birds. All bird owners, whether commercial producers or backyard poultry enthusiasts, should continue to practice good biosecurity, prevent contact between their birds and wild birds, and to report sick birds or unusual bird deaths to state/federal officials, either through your state veterinarian or through USDA s tollfree number at 1-866-536-7593. Additional information on biosecurity for backyard flocks can be found at healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov ------------------------------------- Georgia Department of Agriculture EMERGENCY RULE March 10, 2015 The Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Agriculture is tasked with protecting Georgia s agriculture industry and the public from agriculture related infectious or contagious diseases. Control of infectious or contagious diseases, as stated in O.C.G.A. 4-4-1, is a necessary function for the health and welfare of the public. The USDA National Veterinary Services Lab (NVSL) recently confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N8 in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California. The NVSL has also confirmed the presence of HPAI H5N2 in Washington, Idaho, Minnesota, and Missouri. No human cases of these avian influenza viruses have been detected in the United States, Canada, or internationally. HPAI is a highly contagious poultry disease that spreads rapidly and has the potential to mutate. HPAI can also cause sporadic infections of the respiratory tract of humans. Most human infections with avian influenza A viruses have occurred following direct or close contact with infected poultry. Furthermore, Georgia s poultry industry has a $28 billion annual impact on the State s economy, which would be devastated by the discovery of HPAI in Georgia. The normal movement of poultry and poultry products from any state in which avian influenza virus is present and spreading is a major and real threat to Georgia s public welfare. In order to protect both the public and economic health of all Georgians, it is, therefore, absolutely essential, vital and in the best interest of the public welfare that requirements be effected to control and prevent the introduction of this contagious and infectious disease in this State. Accordingly, the Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture has determined that an Emergency Rule requiring the testing of all live birds prior to entry into Georgia is necessary. In accordance with 50-13-4(b), an Emergency Rule is being promulgated effective March 10, 2015. This Rule will remain in effect no longer than 120 days from the effective date.
