THE MOST UNEXPECTED REASON DOGS FAIL AT DESTINATION

THE MOST UNEXPECTED REASON DOGS FAIL AT DESTINATION What can you tell me?

THE MOST UNEXPECTED REASON DOGS FAIL AT DESTINATION Very little body language can mean the animal is fearful

THE MOST UNEXPECTED REASON DOGS FAIL AT DESTINATION Fearful animals are likely to have problems during or after transport

CONCERNS WITH MOVING FEARFUL DOGS Brain Chemistry Cortisol Stress Hormone Oxytocin Love Hormone Challenges with sending them on the truck: Overwhelmed by transport Defensive behavior Not quickly adopted May require extra Bmod resources at Dest. Euthanasia is possible

ID ING FEARFUL DOGS Obvious behaviors Cowering, shaking, hiding Growling, staring Ambiguous behaviors Low activity levels Multi-meaning behavior

ID ING FEARFUL DOGS Ambiguous Behavior Body language that is hard to read: Stands still Doesn t try to escape or hide Doesn t choose to come closer but may stand still near someone Avoids eye contact Absence of tail movement Allows test without resistance May be described as calm

ID ING FEARFUL DOGS Calming Signals include behaviors that could have multiple meanings: Scratching Yawning Shaking Sniffing Sneezing Drooling Other Typically indicate anxiety Not sufficient info to make decision to send / not send Part of the big picture

DECISIONS ABOUT FEARFUL DOGS Scoring Fearful Dogs Data sheet scores cover actual behaviors but can t catch nonbehaviors If the dog passes on a technicality but you aren t sure, opt out for that dog

DECISIONS ABOUT FEARFUL DOGS When in doubt Confer with others in your shelter Consult with me Send a video (And/or) don t send the dog

ROCK THE CBA

ROCK THE CBA Prepare Review any questioned areas in manual Make sure the room is in order and there is nothing on the floor of the test area Check your supply of toys and rawhides Are they the right size? Are they clean? Mix your food in the right sized bowl

Clean your fake hand ROCK THE CBA Get a stash of clean hand towels and drape one over the back of your chair Get clean leash & collar of the correct sizes

ROCK THE CBA Crutches, Hacks and Props! Use the CBA Hack Data Sheet Communicate with your team mate Check and re-check the manual Put cheat sheets on the wall When in doubt send me a video

ROCK THE CBA Coach your observer Ideally use trained observer Trained observers know CBA 2014 If untrained, coach him/her first Have him/her read test instructions from manual How to hold leash Grasp it in both hands How tightly leash should be held Observer should not interact with the dog besides holding leash; stay neutral

ROCK THE CBA Select Helper Dog in advance. Make sure s/he: Is good with other dogs Is approximately the same size as the Test Dog Feed your Test Dog At least 2 hours before CBA No more than 4 hours before CBA

ROCK THE CBA Smart Dog Handling Don t Lean, reach or hover over your Test Dog Shove or pull body into position Coddle or baby-talk the dog excessively Do Keep your body loose Keep your attention on the dog without staring at him Interact with him briefly if he requests interaction

ROCK THE CBA Observe Test Dog Behavior Before test Days beforehand Immediately before Between test sections Use note sections After test Immediately after Days and weeks after Retest at 30 days

ROCK THE CBA Use all available information to make the best decisions about who to send: Veterinary Shelter observations Owner history CBA results Communication
