4 SECRETARY S REPORT Presented at AGM, February 2015 TO/B P & G Richardson EQUAL 4TH FEMALE TRILIAN GM ELLE O/ S Black B/ P & G Richardson 1ST CAT (MALE) By Penny Richardson Good afternoon Members., A good year for the Club with two shows being held, one at the start of the year in March at Wilberforce was the first show for Cats NSW last year and a very nice day was had by all. The judging was done in a timely matter and because it was quite hot we were able to finish early and leave before the onset of the storm that was brewing. The second show was at the end of the year at Appin and was a show with a Halloween Theme. The hall looked really great after the decorating efforts of the committee and the exhibitors got into the theme with some dressing up and decorated cages. It was a very enjoyable show. Because it was hard to find a suitable date that suited everyone, it was decided not to have a Siamese Cat Society Christmas Party and most of the committee attended the Cats NSW CAT OF THE YEAR which was held at the Richmond Greyhound Club. We had a very delicious dinner, Secret Santa, greyhound racing and the presentations. Everyone seemed to have an excellent time. Congratulations to all the above members. Our next show will be on Saturday 14 March, and being held at Wilberforce again. We were going to use the Richmond Greyhound Club, but unfortunately although we kept enquiring of the manager, we were not told until January, that Cats NSW nor any other club will be able to use their premises this year. The schedule had to be submitted to CatsNSW for their January meeting and so I had to move quickly to secure a venue and was lucky enough to be able to get Wilberforce. 2014 RESULTS FOR MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY CATS NSW CAT OF THE YEAR COMPETITION: Group 2 CAT OF THE YEAR. 1ST KITTEN FEMALE CHRISTERNEE TRUE LOVE O/B P& C Gunczy 2ND KITTEN FEMALE CHRISTERNEE LIL INCA O/ S Hilton & J Ferguson B/ P & C Gunczy EQUAL 4TH FEMALE TRILIAN PW ALASKA DGC. 5 Members Article Article by Jaimie Hancock W.A. Targaryen Siamese Cats is located in Albany, a historic regional town in Western Australia about 5 hours drive from Perth, on the south coast. My name is Jaime Hancock and my family is proud to own and breed pure Siamese. Almost 5 years ago I was diagnosed with a rare condition called Benign Intracranial Hypertension (BIH) which is where I produce too much cerebrospinal fluid leading to high pressure in the spinal and brain cavity. I had to give up work at the time and was looking at something I could do at home for enjoyment and a hobby. My instant thought was Siamese cats as my family has always had Siamese cats. My grandmother and mother bred and showed Siamese cats in the 1970's and early 80's. I grew up with and around Siamese cats. They also provide a unique companionship, plus an activity that my three sons could share in with me and enjoy. I would like to thank Valda McDermott from Jingili and Tony & Bev Hurry from Kalinya, not only for providing such excellent breeding cats, but also for their valuable help and advice. A combination of their excellent breeding lines, and the kittens being raised in our loving family home environment has resulted in very social, intelligent kittens with owners that are very happy. We have had a few owners purchase second Siamese and now have a growing waiting list. I couldn't be happier with our Siamese. Photo: Jaimie, her mum Trish, sons Caleb, Ethan and Liam and Daenerys, Merlin and Mike. My husband Steve helps with the photos and website and my sons with the daily activities such as feeding and playing. Its also been very educational for them to witness and assist at births, vet visits and other activities such as teaching the cats to walk on leads and play fetch. We would not give up our Siamese for anything. They have been a big and very special healing part of our lives. I'm so proud to be a pure Siamese cat owner and breeder and hope to continue for many purrfect years to come. To register your litters on our Kitten Registry, contact: Christine Gunczy P: (02) 4575 1007 Any articles, photos, short stories, poems, anecdotes welcome Happy Earster Special THANKS TO L J HOOKER PICTON For their generosity in publishing the FELIS at their cost and full colour, hope you enjoy it!! 5

8 2015 SHOW REPORT The Siamese Cat Society of NSW held its 58 th All Breeds Championship & Companion Show on Saturday 14 th March 2015. We returned to last year s venue the Wilberforce School of Arts Hall at Wilberforce, just a couple of minutes drive north of Richmond. This was due to a last minute cancellation of the Richmond Greyhound venue where regular Cats NSW shows were held during 2014. Quick action by Grant & Penny Richardson secured the hall, which although it had been agreed by SCS committee not to return to, was considered workable in the circumstances due to the expected smaller entry of cats. At this year s SCS AGM, both Grant & Penny withdrew their services as Show Manager & Show Secretary respectively which found myself as Show Manager and Sharryn Hilton co-opted in to Show secretary role. Firstly a thank you from SCS to Grant & Penny for the many times they have each filled these roles & the hours of work that they gave to ensure a successful SCS event. Five weeks out from the show, the pressure was on SCS committee to work together to coordinate the many requirements of holding its 58 th Show. So much thanks must go to Sharryn Hilton for following up and actioning the many tasks involved in holding a show that either had not been confirmed or started. Many emails & phone conversations best ensured we addressed each of them with the resultant show evidence of our success. With the handover from Grant and Penny it was vital that their input was timely and we thank both of them for providing information to us on each occasion. Once Sharryn had made and confirmed airline bookings with each of our visiting judges, Belinda Penglis (FCCQ) and Anne Harvey (FCCQ), and arranged for chauffeur pick up from airport to Winsor Motel, one would have thought that was all done and dusted. Ah!! Not so as on Friday Belinda s flight was cancelled causing her a delay and obviously a delayed arrival time in Sydney. Quick action by Sharryn communicated this to Anne and to the Hawkesbury Shuttle service who advised us of a small $30.00 waiting surcharge as it would put them in a time zone of Friday afternoon peak hour traffic. SCS committee agreed this year to fund the shuttle service rather than lose a worker at show set up as nowadays we find ourselves with so few members & workers to complete the set up task in a timely manner. Set up day on Friday 13 th was the next major challenge and was met with the following members giving of their time and energy Sharryn Hilton, Sharon Black, Grant Richardson, Valda McDermott, Peter Gunczy (who also picked up our Oz-Pet from supplier) and four WOOFERS from the Fullcircle Farm, courtesy of Sharryn Hilton and John Ferguson. If you don t know what a WOOFER please visit http:// www.wwoof.com Cages and trestle tables were unloaded and put in place in the hall, bunting secured to the tables, show signs in place, raffle table adorned with a multitude of prizes, dining and vetting layout set up, space for Creature Features stall allocated, signs in place or ready for next morning placement, and then it was the obligatory checking and rechecking that all cages were allocated correctly. The stage was dressed with plenty of hats in accord with the Mad Hatters show theme and each of sponsors product were suitably displayed. We must thank those sponsors who provide our SCS show and our Cats NSW shows with ample product to reward those attending and also enjoying success. Thank you. 8

9 2015 SHOW REPORT cont.. With start time of 11.00am and with this band of workers, all was completed by 2.30pm allowing us to get home at a reasonable time to do it all again the next day. Show Day started with a much appreciated drop in temperature being a cool 21deg, sunny with a little cloud which for a hall without airconditioning made it more comfortable for exhibits and exhibitors. With a total of 50 exhibits entered, only one vet was required and thanks to Karen Hedburg, North Richmond Veterinary Hospital for accepting our invitation and to SCS member Sharon Black for assisting as vet steward. Thankfully there were no vet outs however disappointingly there were quite a few absentees with end result finding 42 exhibits in the hall for judging. The wafting of bacon and egg rolls and coffee from the kitchen attracted many an exhibitor and worker and our thanks to Penny and Trina for being there for an early start to tempt the masses. Once our judges had finished their breakfast and I had welcomed and thanked all including our sponsors, judging commenced a little later than advertised at 9.30am. With the withdrawal of our previously invited stewards, our thanks to Helena Sugar, Sharon Black and Grant Richardson for filling the vacancies and working so capably with our three judges. Those exhibitors and visitors witnessing the ring judging enjoyed the presentation and rapport that both Anne and Belinda had with each and every exhibit. No bites, scratches, first-aid treatments from cat or exhibitor is always a good sign. As always, the processing of paper work throughout the show was efficient and timely and much thanks goes firstly to Sharon Curtis for providing us with error free, professional documents then to Bruce Chandler for collecting and distributing to the recorders team of Irene Chandler, John Greenway and Terry Goulden. A job very well done which not only found no delays but also provided results sheets, award cards and marked catalogues by shows conclusion. And it does not stop there with the processing as results then must transfer to the Trophy team and our thanks to SCS members, the Gunczy family, Peter, Christine and Renee, for the ever efficient allocation of prizes and trophies. Once ring judging was completed and lunch break was concluded having once again tasted the sumptuous fresh meals prepared and offered by Penny, Trina and BBQ chef Grant, our third judge Jenny Weekes (Cats NSW) was welcomed to the floor to judge our two annual and prestigious Siamese Cat Society awards, the Joyce Selby Memorial Trophy for Best pure, one breed Siamese exhibit and the LJ Hooker Picton and Fullcircle Siamese award for Best pure, one breed Siamese exhibit bred by exhibitor. Some 16 exhibits had nominated for this judging including last year s winner of both awards, Trilian PW Alaska, owned and bred by Penny and Grant Richardson. Since the inception of the Joyce Selby trophy it has been won by some well-known Siamese breeders including Collinear (1), Trilian (3), Yolinda (1), Lao (2), Graystons (1), Christernee (2) and Kaluamoa (1). This year both awards were won by Kalinya OM Jemma, a seal point spay bred by Tony and Bev Hurry with runner up Trilian PW Alaska and third to Kalinya YD Carnie. Obviously a very proud day for Bev & I, and we are honoured to be added to the breeders as listed above. It was now Supreme in Show time with the following exhibits to be judged firstly by each of our ring judges, Belinda and Anne : RING 1 Belinda Group 1 Rrufnex I m A Cool Dancing Coon Black classic tabby Maine Coon neuter cat, Owned/Bred: Aaron & Helena Sugar Group 2 Nevabay I AmThe Russian Queen Black silver spotted tabby Peterbald female kitten, Owned/Bred: Aaron & Helena Sugar Group 3 Bellaspree Bossi Boi Black silver classic tabby American Shorthair neuter kitten, Owned: Marcelle Brown Bred: J.Coles Supreme R1 Bellaspree Bossi Boi Owned: Marcelle Brown Bred: J.Coles RING 2 Anne Group 1 Coolcoons Wildlight Black tortoiseshell classic tabby bi-colour Maine Coon female kitten, Owned/Bred: Fiona Cooper & MaryJo Bailey Group 2 Db Gd Ch Azov Pink Seaview lilac point Siamese, female cat Owned/Bred: Cathy Murdoch Group 3 Bellaspree Bossi Boi Black silver classic tabby American Shorthair neuter kitten, Owned: Marcelle Brown Bred: J.Coles Supreme R2 Supreme In Show Bellaspree Bossi Boi Owned: Marcelle Brown Bred: J.Coles Bellaspree Bossi Boi Owned: Marcelle Brown Bred: J.Coles 9

10 2015 SHOW REPORT cont.. With Supreme in each Ring being the same exhibit, our Supreme in Show judge Jenny Weekes was given no decision to make, however she did comment as to what an outstanding exhibit achieved the award. A bit of fun next with our visiting Queensland judges returning to the floor to judge the Mad Hatters hat award to the exhibitor with the Best Mad Hatters hat. Contestants Renee Gunzcy and John Greenway were competing strongly with crowd favourite Renee edging in front until a very very last minute Pixiebob owned by Michael Phillips & Richard Frame arrived with hat in place to usurp the crowd s affection & sway the judge s decision to earn the Mad Hatters award. Gratuitously, Michael donated the $50.00 prize donated by Fullcircle Siamese to CatsNSW for allocating to an appropriate cat rescue organisation. It was now time for our raffle to be drawn and thanks must go to our SCS members, friends, exhibitors and sponsors for providing such an array of prizes, there must have been 25+ on the table!! A huge thank you goes to members John Ferguson, Bev Hurry and Cheyenne Anderson for the exceptional effort and result achieved in selling so many tickets to provide us with a windfall financial result that will be of great benefit to the profitability of the show. The major prizes donated by Orivet, Haus of Hund, Creature Features, Avon all seemed to very well received. Finally, it was for me to once again thank the so many contributor s to our 58 th Show judges, workers, caterers, sponsors, show processor, stallholder and of course our exhibitors all of whom contributed to the show s success. Also to Fiona Cooper and Sharryn Hilton, a thank you for accommodating Anne & Belinda respectively, on the Saturday night pre their return flights Sunday morning. Show was closed bidding a safe journey home for all. Then it was the time to pull down the show to return the hall to its original state. No WOOFERS this time, however the small team that remained assisted to quickly to remove, repack vehicles including the 30 trestle tables sold to Illawarra Pedigree Cat Fancy travelling in my trailer, collect garbage, sweep and clean, check all requirements of hall hire met then it was alarm on, door shut, return keys to hirer and home for all. F E L I S Furniture Scratching Like any other cat the Siamese needs to sharpen their claws, but preferably NOT on the carpet or the furniture!!!! If you acquire a new charge you will need to have already found a suitable Scratch pole or scratch house for this little bundle of claws. When you first Place his get that kitten smell on the home, apart from scratching taking him to the post and this litter tray, his feed will help him bowls and his water recognise his bowl, you need to place!! show him that the scratch post is just for him, take his little face and gently rub the side of his mouth on the scratch post, in a couple of places, this will place his smell on the post and he will instinctively use it in future. You also need to take his little front feet and show him the scratching motions on the post so he knows that is also a good thing. Siamese are extremely intelligent and being told he is a good boy when you do this even as young as 12 weeks he has already been well and truly litter trained by his mum, he knows where his scratch post was when he had his brothers and sisters and now needs to know what is his in his new home. A couple of trips to the scratch post and gentle coaxing from you should have him showing off in no time, Just be on the ball if he thinks he can also use the carpet, a quick actioned pick up and delivery to the scratch post is usually enough to ensure that he knows that he post is his and maybe even a second one in a window area guarantees a big purr of approval. Cats also love to sit high up and watch the goings on below. Cats always love Multi level scratch posts. 16 P A G E 16 Is your cat sick? How can you tell? What can you do? You may be one of the best cat owners, closely monitoring her every turn. If unusual symptoms persist ensure you take her to the Vet. Cats often cant tell you that they are ill until it is almost too late. Symptoms could include, a sticky or wicky coat, dull to look at, the skin not bouncing back quickly if taken between your fingers and let go. The fur starts to heavily shed, listlessness, watery eyes, watery diarrhea or constipation that lasts for more than 24 hours. Hearing a persistent cough or watching your cat straining to pass urine. Are all signs of un-wellness of your cat. There is no need to panic if you see your cat vomit after eating grass as this is a safe mode for a cat to help themselves rid a hairball or an unwanted item in their gut. It is usually a sign of reasonable health. But signs to look for in your precious Siamese are further things like any acute selling areas on the body or loss of weight suddenly,, obviously signs of lameness, or not self grooming or hiding in dark spaces. Any of these things can be a cause for alarm to the cat owner. Preventable illness ridding your cat or kitten of parasites and having their annual booster shots and not allowing you cat outside to get into an altercation with another cat, dog or car. Your vet can give your cat their annual boosters which may be F3 which covers the herpesvirus, calcivirus, and panleukopaneia virus. Feline Leukaemia virus can also be added making it an F4 vaccine. upon your vet s advice. The Siamese has a close coat which becomes dull and wicky when most illness strike BUT not always. Desexing The responsible choice. Unless the cat is to be a Stud or Queen in a Registered Breeding facility, the Desexing decision should be a no brainer. A lot of responsible registered breeders are desexing their kittens prior to them going to their new home. The kitten can come into season as early as 4-5 months old and is quite distressing to the kitten and extremely audible to the owner and usually the neighbours as well, when the kitten is a Siamese!! Oh yes, that conversation that you have been having until now is a quiet whisper until the call is on show for all to hear. Louder than your local school siren and almost mind wrenching when it fails to stop in a few days as the books suggest. I have a queen who missed the hyhen in the middle of 4-6 days and the call goes on for almost 35 days (very distressing for the owners and the cat.) Many vets today are extremely happy to know that the kitten is already neutered prior to going to a new home, as long as it weighs at least 1 kilo and must be 12 weeks of age for the vet to deem ok to do the type of operation they need. It is also noted, that some vets don t like this option, so it s a responsible choice of the breeder and their vet. It is a solution to what has always been a world wide problem. Kittens should be at least 1 kilo at 12 weeks old 16

19 P A G E 19 F E L I S In most associations, 12 weeks of age is the minimum age for showing. Preparing Your Kitten for a Show Wanting to show your kitten for the first time can be a daunting task if you have never done it before. Knowing how to go about it can be a huge undertaking to the novice. But there are a few simple steps to take if this is your goal. Firstly ensure your paperwork is in place with your registration papers and entry forms sent into the club or association on time with the respective payments. If your kitten has not been shown before it might be advisable to have some practice for you and your kitten in how to be picked up and handled. You need to pick up the kitten in the show handling steps, like having your kitten in a show cage or confined area for a couple of hours at a time, occasionally going in and getting the kitten out of the cage and bringing him to a table, and lifting the kitten several times and holding him in the show position of one hands under his front legs and chest and the other hand in between his rear legs and being able to stretch the kitten in the length to best see his profile, body length, tail length and his ear and head set when placed on the table, His eye colour and shape, his coat type and colouring etc. are all things the judge will want to inspect. Personality needs to be one that enables the judge to handle him without being scratched or bitten. The night before the show he needs to have his nails trimmed, checked for any fleas, have a bath or at least a good chamois to ensure his coat is looking its best. Food and water needs to be prepared so the kitten or cat can partake of refreshments during the break A small litter tray is also necessary to ensure no accidents on your show curtains and base. Most shows allow coloured curtains and bases to show off your kitten. Cage sizes can vary from single to double sized cages and can be hired from the club if you don t own one. Costs are low and its great fun! Below, Renowned Judge, Margaret Steed Vic, inspecting Christernee Lil Inca (8mth,Blue Pt.) at the SCS Show Oct 2014 The Kittens and Cats need to have a nice disposition to be able to be handled by strangers. Is Showing a Dying Art? Sadly, Cat Shows are seeming to be getting smaller and smaller. The faithful few who continue to ensure that the cat shows are not a thing of the past, are certainly becoming thinner on the ground. Without Cat Shows, the purebred cat may become a less sought after animal. Or the registered breeder may become a thing of the past as well. The animal quality may also suffer if our breeds are to no longer be something of which to be super proud and comparisons made with other like breeds. From years past, when the Cat Show earned large prizes to current Shows earning ribbons, rosettes or product. It is becoming more and more difficult to indeed encourage the Pure Breed Cat owner to begin to show their cat or kitten. The list of Registered Breeders who still show their cats or kittens is Who Can Show Their Cat? Many people think that they can t show their cat once it has been desexed (Neutered or Spayed) but you can. You can show your kitten or cat as long as it is a Pure Breed with it s registration Papers and pedigree. You can even show your cat or kitten as a Companion cat, as long as the show has a section for it. You are always welcome to contact us or anyone on the committee for further details. As long as you have your registration papers (even if you haven't received the amended ones you can still show under the seller s name (if they are agreeable) for up to three shows. Once you own your kittie outright, you just enter each time and come along and enjoy a fun day out depleting in numbers every year. If anyone has any suggestions as to how we can encourage greater numbers in our Cat Shows we would gladly hear from you and perhaps begin to increase the numbers once more. After all, it is a great place of friendship and fun and especially in our new Cats NSW affiliation it is widely seen as a great place for a big smile and an encouraging word to all who appear. with like minded cat lovers. You can purchase cat curtains and bases from the internet, or if you are handy you can make them yourself. You can hire the cat cage from the Cat club or own your own,. You will enjoy a great day and learn more about your cat and the other breeds as well. So why not give it a go??? It is fun!!!! F E L I S A P R I L, 2 0 1 5 19
