CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Hachiko Dog s Story movie is a 2009 American film directed by Lasse Hallstrom written by Stephen P. Lindsey. The movie Hachiko A Dog' Story is based on a true story that took in first half of the 20 th century in Japan. The film start Professor Parker Wilson (played by Richard Gere) comes across a lost Akita puppy at the train station from he works one night. He takes the pup to Carl (Jason Alexander), the stationmaster, to ask if anyone has been looking for the dog. Carl says no, and refuses to keep the dog overnight. Parker has an obvious soft spot for the pup, so he decides to take it home until the owner comes to claim it. Lasse Hallstrom as movie director was born on June 2, 1946 in Stockholm, Sweden. Hallstrom begins his film career at the age of 10 in Swedish television. He directed a number of music videos, most notably for the Swedish pop phenomenon, before graduating to full-length TV programs. His feature film directorial debut came in 1975 with A Guy and A Gal. In 1977, Hallström wrote, produced, and directed the well-rated documentary performance film, ABBA: The Movie, after making a number of Swedish films, including Father to Be (1979), The Rooster (1981), and Happy We (1983), Hallstrom gained international recognition, including Oscar 1

nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, for My Life as a Dog (1985), adapted from Reider Jonsson's autobiographical novel about a 12- year-old boy growing up in an eccentric country village during the 1950s. With the success of My Life as a Dog, Hallström became known for his sensitive directorial style and his particular skill at directing child actors. He next directed two films adapted from works by Astrid Lindgren (author of the classic Pippi Longstocking series): The Children of Bullerby Village (1986) and More About the Children of Bullerby Village. (http://www.biography.com/articles/lasse-hallstr.b6m-9542297) Hachiko Dog Story tells about a loyal dog named Hachiko. This very special friend would accompany his master to the train station every day and return each afternoon to greet him after work. Sadly, his master departs one day, passes away and never returns to the station. Hachiko faithfully returns to the same spot at the station every day and every next day for the next ten years to wait for his beloved master. During his daily visits, Hachiko touches the lives of many who work near and commute through the town square. He teaches the local people love, compassion and above all unyielding loyalty. Today, a bronze statue of Hachiko sits in his waiting spot outside the Shibuya station in Japan as a permanent reminder of his devotion and love. After watching this movie, the researcher is interested in analyzing the psychological state of the major character (Parker Wilson) because he has strong character. He finds Hachi in the American train station, where he is

instantly captivated by the dog and when Carl, the station controller, refuses to take him, Parker takes the puppy home overnight. His wife Cate (Joan Allen) is insistent about not keeping the puppy, but Parker decided to keep Hachi because he was lovely it. In the literary review, there are many approaches likes: feminist, Individual psychological, sociological, psychoanalytic and Marxist. Individual psychological is one of approach that has main a study of humanist psychological with Alfred Adler as the pioneer of Individual psychological. There are many responses to the performance of Hachiko Dog s Story movie, some of them such as: from Aisha This was one of the most emotional movies I have ever seen. We as humans cannot do what this fourlegged creature did. In reality after the death, the master s wife adopted Hachiko, but Hachiko ran away from the house and waited for ten years at the same spot and at the same time where his master left last and died at the same spot as well. He was truly a remarkable dog. Also the climax was excellent when the Hachiko remembers the first time he discovered his master and he cries and finally closes his eyes still in pain longing to be with his master. Hachi is truly my hero. There is so much we can learn from him. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/mar/11/hachi-a-dogs-tale). The second commend came from Pappy Hachiko is one of the most touching movies ever made only Grave of the Fireflies had hit me that way. But this movie is not just great because of it makes you cry like a little baby, it is just a good film: An immortal story, a famous and competent director in charge. I love how he

visualize the point of view of a dog, impeccable photography, a beautiful score and great performances. I hope the movie gain the respect that it deserves. (http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a207809/hachi-a-dogstale.html). From those comments, the writer could take a note that actually Hachiko Dog s Story movie has a good filming production and education value. It is determined in the plot line, theme and of course in the character of the actors and actress. Hachiko Dog s Story is an interesting movie, there are three aspects that make this movie really interesting. The first is from the character and characterization that are mostly explored in this movie, Hachi and Parker Wilson. They have great spiritual braiding; Hachiko somehow knew how to read the time in order to wait at the station at the same time everyday for nine years. Waiting for nine years it s the extent of an animal s love, dedication and persistence could reach those heights. The second interesting point of this film is this film truly takes place in the real life especially in Japan and also it is scare adapting the film from the true story happened in society. It is a true story based on a faithful Akita dog named Hachiko, its love and devotion towards his master. The last reason is easy to understand, since the film from the beginning until the end mostly tells the waiting of Hachi to his master. Therefore, the massage is simply to convey to others.

According to those aspects, the researcher would like to explore and analyze emotion in Hachiko Dog s Story based on the individual psychological, and the title is TRAINING THE DOG TO BE FAITHFUL IN LASSE HALLSTROM S HACHIKO DOG S STORY MOVIE (2009) AN INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH. B. Literature Review After looking for several literary reviews in the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta.
