Dear Members: Brainerd Kennel Club Gazette The Newsletter for Our Club July 2012 Looking back at the past nine months, I am impressed by how competitive our club members have been in Conformation and Rally and Obedience trials, the three competitive events for which our club offers classes. Though the numbers of those who actually compete in these events is still limited, our showing has been impressive. Consider these high points: Jaci Peterson and Nestle won High Combined Score at the Key City Kennel Club. Roger Peterson and Kihei went to the National Invitational Obedience Trial for the second straight year. Only the top dogs in the nation are invited, so this is a high honor. Kihei also recently earned his Grand Master title in Obedience to go with his Obedience Trial Championship. Kay and Lamar Gunnarson have two more Champions Jetta, their German Wirehaired Pointer and Tula, their Miniature Poodle who they are currently showing as a Special and who recently earned her Grand Championship. Susan Voss and Kati returned to competition at the Key City Kennel Club after a year and a half absence and won third prize in the highly competitive Open B class. Traci Vosen won second prize in Open B at the Fargo-Moorhead Kennel Clun Show. I am proud of my two Shetland Sheepdogs. Cash completed his Rally Novice and Companion Dog Titles, even going High in Trial at the Fargo-Moorhead Show, his second time in the Obedience ring. Ernie topped this by achieving his Utility Dog Title at the Key City Show. And the future looks bright. We have some very promising younger members such as Sheridan Wilson who won her Junior Handler Classes and a Reserve ribbon with her young Portuguese Water Dog, Sagimar Shadows Lunar Eclipse. And we have had large Puppy and Beginner Classes with a number of future competitors on their way up. A large number of our class participants have completed their Canine Good Citizen certificates. The opportunity for successful competition has been greatly increased, of course, by being able to train and to practice at Hunts Point, one of the best dog training facilities in Minnesota and by the willingness of Roger and Jaci Peterson to offer run-throughs for potential competitors prior to classes on Thursday evenings. Thanks also to Pat Cunningham for his training people to present and show their dogs in Conformation Classes. There is also the opportunity to train year round by taking Hunts Point s classes on Tuesday evening. See you all at the Fun Match and at the Picnic! Sally Ihne, President

from the Director of Training I was reading a historical book recently about a small Finish community in Ontario. After going through some bad times and stagnation, the community was failing. Discord and segregation were holding back any progress. One of the local women got people together, and they all started working to rebuild. She stated, "People need not only to be able but to enjoy working together." Survival depends on participation. The momentum that participation gives is like a smile. It keeps spreading; it's contagious. The more people participate, the more we can offer. The more we offer, the more people participate. This certainly applies to a club or organization. Let's get on board and participate! We have great leadership to get us moving ahead and progressing. "All Aboard." Sincerely, Roger BKC Fall Classes Brainerd Kennel Club s Fall Classes start in September at Hunts Point. Beginner s Class will start at 6:30, on Thursday, Sept. 6. The instructor is Jack Anderson. Novice Obedience Class also starts on September 6, at 7:45. The instructor is Jaci Peterson. Starting on Thursday, Sept. 13 is Puppy Class at 6:30, with instructors Pat and Judy Cunningham. The Conformation Class will be at 7:45 with Pat Cunningham. Registration Forms are on the Brainerd Kennel Club web site, www.bkcdogs.org.
