More than just a market MARKET NEWS 26 th APRIL 2016 Manager s Mutterings The fat cattle buildings and pens are almost gone within the week making Melton Market look very different. The new setup to take us through to the opening of the new cattle building next year worked extremely well and I would like to thank all customers and staff, as well as contractors 24/7 (for moving the weighbridge and ensuring it remained 100% accurate), local firms Front Row & J T Engineering for their help in making this happen. Queues were actually reduced and timings improved by bringing the stores and fat cattle into the same building and we can only imagine how much better still it will be next year. Under our Orange market, we are still able to house the TB exempt cattle, and cattle from Edge & Risk parishes untested. We had a new buyer around the fat ring today who made an impact and was welcomed, buying some of the quality cattle on offer and ensuring the total received by farmers was right at the top end compared to deadweight and liveweight alternatives. Ben is now welcoming his customers on the docks, with stores being numbered in the pens and good numbers and prices. We are taking in cattle for lairage Bank Holiday Monday 2 to 5pm. Please book in lairage with the office. We expect there may be high demand given some customers suggested they had held back to see how the new system would work and were encouraged to bring more Tom reports a very brisk trade on ewes and lambs today with much interest, in particular for young ewes and those with stronger lambs. Some very good lots of ewes and lambs coming forward in the next few weeks, details of which will be kept updated on the website.
