14 Route 22 West 2195 Route 22 West Green Brook, NJ 08812 Union, NJ 07083 Buying a Puppy for the Holidays With the winter holidays rapidly approaching, finding the perfect gift is always a challenge. With a puppy topping this year s Christmas list, what could be more endearing than watching a loved one find the puppy that they ve longed for under the tree on Christmas morning? If this holiday fantasy appeals to you, consider taking on the responsibility of caring for a puppy. It is quite an endeavor, and the stress of the holidays can make this task all the more overwhelming, however, with the proper research this dream may be closer to reality than you d imagine. By researching the breeds you are interested in, you are sure to find the ideal addition to your family. There are hundreds of breeds to chose from, so there is a perfect puppy for everyone! Siberian Husky The key is finding the breed that is most compatible with your lifestyle. Active families should consider Terriers and Retrievers, while more laid back Shar Pei families might investigate breeds such as Shih Tzus or Pugs that were bred as companion animals. Families with allergies have several breeds to choose from, including Bichon Frises, Poodles and Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. It can be difficult during the hectic holiday season to devote time to training a new puppy. Consider having Santa deliver your puppy the week before, so that you can get him acclimated to your household before the bustle of the holidays begins. Shake A Paw can provide you with a new puppy starter kit prior to delivery to ease the transition to your home. Prepare your family for the new arrival by mapping out a game plan for feeding, training and caring for your puppy. Puppies learn from repetition, so keep your puppy on a set schedule, and try not to deviate from it. The more consistent you are, the quicker your puppy will learn proper behaviors. By purchasing a training book or DVD to assist your family, your puppy should train quickly. During the cold winter months, it s especially important to keep your November 2013 young puppy indoors. A puppy s immune system is still developing until approximately 20 weeks of age. To keep your puppy safe from colds and illness, Shake A Paw recommends housebreaking your puppy indoors until it is consistently 55 degrees or warmer outside. Winter time means wee wee pads, and a crate for house training. If used in conjunction, these tools will facilitate an easy transition to eliminating outdoors when the weather is warmer. Crates also double as a safe haven for your puppy, giving him a refuge when the household gets too busy. Finally, make sure that your puppy has plenty of safe teething toys to occupy him if he cannot go outside to play. Toys like Nylabones, Booda ropes, and Kongs will keep your puppy busy. If you are prepared to bring a loving companion into your home at this time, Shake A Paw has compiled information on 36 breeds, to help you begin your research. Look inside to find out a little bit about Shake A Paw s most popular breeds! Pembroke Welsh Corgi Holiday Sale November 29 December 15 All Puppies On Sale!! 20% Off All Merchandise!! 1

Great Breeds LABRADOR RETRIEVER: The American Kennel Club s most popular breed, the Lab truly deserves his rank as the number one family dog. Labs are gentle with children, intelligent and obedient, and will even serve as a watch dog. A well trained Lab is playful outdoors and calm indoors. These 60 to 85 pound dogs come in yellow, chocolate and black. Take one home today and you ll want one in every color! SHIH TZU: With a fun loving and comical demeanor, the Shih Tzu is the epitome of unconditional love. A playful children s companion, the Shih Tzu weighs 10-16 pounds. Shih Tzus benefit from consistent training, and are agreeable and eager to please. Their luxurious coat can be grown long, or kept short in a puppy cut for easy manageability. With their easy going nature and non-shedding coat, it s easy to see why the Shih Tzu is our number one selling breed! BASSET HOUND: With his soulful eyes and velvety ears, the Basset Hound is a slow thinker as well as a slow mover. These low-key layabouts reach an adult weight of 40 to 60 pounds, but stand no more than 14 inches tall. These sensitive hounds respond well to kind words and gentle training. When called upon, the Basset s big voice makes him a worthy watchdog. BEAGLE: Affectionate to a fault, Beagles thrive in homes where constant companionship is available. These social hounds appreciate the company of other dogs, especially if their human family is away during the day. By keeping your eager Beagle busy with training, you can ensure an adult that is neither vocal nor stubborn. These adorable puppies come in two sizes: the 13 inch Beagle grows to 20 pounds; and the 15 inch may exceed 30 pounds. PUG: Good natured and playful, Pugs make friends everywhere they go. This sturdy character should maintain a healthy weight of 14 to 20 pounds, as they are prone to over-eating. Although they enjoy the outdoors, Pugs do not thrive in hot or humid weather. These comedians snort and snore to show their zest for life. Pug owners will agree, Pugs are like potato chips, you can t have just one! GOLDEN RETRIEVER: The Golden is everyone s friend, and is known for being a loyal, obedient, and devoted family member. Well rounded Goldens benefits from both mental stimulation and physical exercise daily. Goldens excel at obedience and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities to focus their enthusiasm. At 55 to 85 pounds, the Golden Retriever s mid-length coat requires frequent brushing to control excessive shedding. This versatile breed is both athletic enough to compete in the field and gentle enough to serve as an assistance dog. With Children SHETLAND SHEEPDOG: Often mistaken for their full sized counterparts, the Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie, is often referred to as the Miniature Collie. A small to mid-sized breed, the Sheltie can range from 15 to 40 pounds. A devoted student, the Sheltie is extremely bright, however requires a gentle teacher due to their sensitive spirit. These active dogs were bred to herd sheep, although today s Sheltie prefers to herd children! The Sheltie s adaptability easily allows it to accept new members into the family s flock -be it a new baby or a new pet. BICHON FRISE: A perfect match for families with children, the Bichon Frise is patient and gentle. The Bichon s happy-go-lucky outlook endears him to family and strangers alike. This lap dog weighs 9 to 16 pounds, and his non-shedding coat requires professional maintenance to look its best. Cute and curly, the Bichon has a soft, inquisitive expression that is sure to melt your heart. MINIATURE SCHNAUZER: When given their classic hair cut, these minimally shedding, spirited dogs resemble little bearded men. This 12 to 18 pound pup enjoys being in the middle of every activity. They function as a superb watch dog, and proper training will ensure a dog that is not overly vocal. The Miniature Schnauzer is inquisitive, playful and alert, and with proper supervision can make a fine children s playmate. BOSTON TERRIER: An American original, the Boston Terrier is an all around gentleman. His tight, sleek coat requires minimal grooming and produces no doggy odor. Weighing in at 10 to 25 pounds, the tidy Boston Terrier is the ultimate apartment dog. These perky puppies quickly mellow to charming lap dogs. Because of their eagerness to please and easy adaptability to children and other pets, Bostons are a wonderful choice for a first time dog owner. ENGLISH BULLDOG: This compact couch potato weighs in at 40 to 70 pounds, and he s a lover not a fighter! The Bulldog s pushed in face causes him to snort, snore and overheat easily, so he does not thrive in warm weather. His short coat is easy to maintain, however his face needs daily cleaning. This most docile dog can be stubborn, but correct him gently so as not to break his spirit. AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD: This medium sized herder grows 40 to 60 pounds, and comes in a wide palate of colors. Always on the go, this smart dog has a high level of stamina to go with his industrious work ethic. If given an outlet for this energy, the Aussie makes a fine house dog, and will even be content to serve as a nanny to the neighborhood children. These courageous companions also make great watch dogs. 100% Instant Financing Available 90 Days Same As Cash See Actual Pictures of Pups You Can Buy Today at ShakeAPaw.Com 3

Designer Mixed Breeds COCKAPOO: The Cocker Spaniel/ Poodle mix is the oldest designer mixed breed, dating back to the 1950 s. This moderately shedding mix can grow from 15 to 30 pounds and comes in a wide range of coat types and colors. Cockapoos combine the intelligence of the Poodle with the popularity of the Cocker Spaniel to create a lower shedding companion. These active pups are typically better suited to older children, but early socialization may overcome this obstacle. LABRADOODLE: A Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle mix, the Labradoodle was introduced in the 1970 s in an attempt to create a lower shedding service dog. Labradoodles grow approximately 50 to 80 pounds, about the size of a pure bred Labrador Retriever. Labradoodles may come in any color found in Labs or Poodles, and coats vary from wiry to curly. Grooming may be a necessity based on coat type. Labradoodles are an active, athletic companion for children and the outdoorsman alike. GOLDENDOODLE: The Goldendoodle combines the Standard Poodle s hypo-allergenic coat with the Golden Retrievers trainability and sweet temperament. Goldendoodles were introduced in the 1990 s as a lower shedding service dog. Adults weigh 50 to 80 pounds, and coats may grow to a length of 3 to 8 inches and be curly or wavy. Doodle puppies are affectionate, social, intelligent and athletic, making them a wonderful addition to any family. SCHNOODLE: A Schnoodle is a mix of a Miniature Schnauzer and a Miniature Poodle. They grow 10 to 20 pounds and usually sport a wiry or curly coat that needs periodic grooming. Allergy sufferers may benefit from a relationship with these nominal shedders. Schnoodles are good with gentle children, eager to learn, and keenly intelligent. The affectionate Schnoodle can be a clever, amusing friend. PUGGLE: A Pug/Beagle mix, the Puggle is 15 to 30 pounds full grown. Usually fawn or black in color, Puggles have a short, sleek coat that is easy to care for. Puggles were bred to negate some of the Pugs breathing characteristics and mellow the Beagle s anxious personality. This combination produces an adorable, healthy puppy with a warm, affectionate personality. The Puggle s popularity is due to its comical attitude and intense love of family. BOGGLE: The Boggle, a Boston Terrier/Beagle mix is often mistaken for a miniature Boxer due to their brindle or black and white coloring. Boggles have a tight coat that requires very little upkeep. They are 15 to 30 pounds full grown, and were created following the Puggle s enormous popularity. Boggles are the ultimate children s pet because of their playful, energetic nature. Boggle fanciers get the best of both breeds in one cute package! Holiday Sale November 29 December 15 4 All Puppies On Sale!! 20% Off All Merchandise!!

Hypo-Allergenic Breeds SHIH TZU: With a fun loving and comical demeanor, the Shih Tzu is the epitome of unconditional love. STANDARD POODLE: The largest of the non-shedding breeds, the Standard Poodle stands over 15 inches at the shoulder and weighs 45 to 75 pounds. These athletic dogs were bred as hunting companions and water retrievers, and are easily as, if not more intelligent than Labrador and Golden Retrievers. A well socialized Standard Poodle may be reserved with strangers, but is a fun loving children s playmate. TOY AND MINIATURE POODLES: Intelligent enough to be in the circus, these peppy little clowns will keep their owners entertained. Toy Poodles are less than 10 inches at the shoulder, with Miniatures standing 10 to 15 inches. Both sizes can come in a variety of solid colors; as well as parti colored, which is any combination of two or more colors. Although Poodles make a suitable family dog, Miniatures are usually better with young children than Toys. The Poodle s grooming needs are numerous, but this is offset by their lack of shedding and doggy odor. SOFT COATED WHEATEN TERRIER: Quickly gaining in popularity, the Wheaten is ideal for families seeking a mid sized, hypoallergenic dog. This animated teddy bear is an energetic breed perfect for those who enjoy outdoor activities. With an adult weight of 35 to 45 pounds, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier s size makes him easily adaptable to either city or country living. Like most terriers, Wheatens benefit from firm but kind training methods to become well mannered family members. COTON de TULEAR: These dogs of nobility hail from Madagascar where they are cherished for their beautiful, non-shedding coats. These members of the Bichon family reach an adult weight of 10 to 16 pounds. Cotons catch on quickly and are easily trained and house broken. They are affectionate, and enjoy the company of children and adults alike. 100% Instant Financing Available 90 Days Same As Cash See Actual Pictures of Pups You Can Buy Today at ShakeAPaw.Com 5

T-Cup & Toy Breeds POMERANIAN: This delightful dog reaches an adult weight of 4 to 8 pounds. Their plush coats come in a variety of colors from cream to jet black, and require daily brushing. Pomeranians are feisty little companions that benefit from early socialization with people and other pets alike. Poms are intelligent, outgoing, and portable, making them a joy of a toy! MALTESE: This tiny white travel companion achieves a full grown size of about 4 to 8 pounds. Due to their diminutive size, the Maltese is recommended for families with older children, and makes an excellent companion for the elderly. Their silky white coat sheds minimally and requires grooming every 6 to 8 weeks, in addition to daily maintenance. This glamorous breed is lively, inquisitive, and sure to steal your heart. YORKSHIRE TERRIER: This regal puppy is America s most popular toy dog. These sought after pups reach an adult size of 4 to 8 pounds, with some individuals growing slightly larger. The Yorkshire Terrier has an abundance of personality for their tiny size and loves to be pampered. Yorkies are bold, protective of their loved ones, and are clever enough to train their owners! As a lower shedding breed, the Yorkshire Terrier needs frequent grooming to maintain their adorable appearance. 6 CHIHUAHUA: The Chihuahua is the longest living toy breed, with some known to live as long as twenty years! Also the world s smallest breed, the Chihuahua reaches an adult weight of 3 to 8 pounds, and their fragile size does not make them well suited for busy households with very young children. These small dogs are confident, bold, and will defend their family against all intruders, real or imagined. This popular toy breed is available in a variety of colors and coat types, making Chihuahuas fun to accessorize and charming to behold. MINIATURE PINSCHER: Known as the King of Toys for their big dog attitude, the Min Pin stands 10-12½ at the shoulder. Available in the classic black and tan, chocolate and tan, or red, their short coats are easy to maintain. With an abundance of energy, Miniature Pinschers are sure to keep their owners entertained. This natural born watch dog is certain to alert his family to any potential trouble. The fearless Min Pin would love to be the king of your castle. PAPILLON: His name is French for butterfly, the Papillon has an affectionate, gentle nature. With an adult weight ranging from 4 to 9 pounds, the Papillon is one of the most patient toy dogs with children. Intelligent and easy to train, Papillons make lively, enjoyable house pets. Their abundant coat is long and flowing, especially on their trademark ears, and comes in a variety of color combinations. Papillons make an exellent choice for those with a flair for the exotic. Don t confuse his slow thinking with stubbornness; the loyal Mastiff is easily trained by a strong, gentle handler. If you are looking for a big dog with a big heart to match, the Mastiff could be just the way to super-size your family! Used as police dogs, search and rescue dogs, bomb and drug dogs, and service dogs, the German Shepherd is a versatile worker. At home, this 65 to 90 pound dog is utterly devoted and faithful. Protective of the family without being aggressive, the German Shepherd is a great watch dog. This lively breed excels in necessary obedience training, and is a trustworthy children s companion pet. BOXER: The muscular Boxer looks the part of the watchdog with a voice to match. Appearances, however, can be deceiving. A Boxer would sooner lick a stranger than do him harm. Weighing in at 55 to 85 pounds, the Boxer sports a shiny coat of fawn or brindle. These loyal and loving dogs devote themselves entirely to their family, be certain you can do the same for them. Boxers need plenty of exercise due to their exuberant, playful demeanor. BULLMASTIFF: A gentle giant, the Bullmastiff can weigh 110 to 140 pounds! The Bullmastiff is not easily alarmed, yet once alerted is fearless, but not aggressive. Due to their large size, the Bullmastiff is not recommended for the novice dog owner.
