There s a story I want to tell you about a friend of mine and her dog. It reminds me that of how reaching out to a friend can have an impact far beyond what you think. Beth has a 6-year-old Shih-Tzu. Beth used to have a pair of Shih-Tzus. Kisses and Hummer, but when she moved to Florida she found that Hummer was allergic to many things in his new environment, and so he went back to the New York area to live. Kisses was bonded to Hummer, and Beth did not have much rapport with her. While she was well-mannered and walked nicely on leash, she did not know much else and appeared to not really want to do much else. Last winter I enrolled my younger dog Charlotte in a tricks class, just for something fun and different to do with her. I invited Beth to come and audit one or two classes with me. She enjoyed it so much that she immediately started working with Kisses and bringing her to class. Turns out Kisses enjoyed doing tricks, and began to look forward to class and to the little daily training sessions at home. Beth was excited, because she felt that there was now a bond between them. She decided to try Kisses as a Therapy Dog, and took that class as well. Kisses loved it, and Beth persevered, completed her test and her observed visits, and is now doing hospital and other facility visits with her dog. Kisses thrives on the attention and love, both from the folks she visits and from her owner Next MOC Membership Meeting January 2 (Wednesday) 7:30 pm Denny s 5825 NW 36 Street Miami, FL 33166 (305) 871-6964. What makes this story even more special is that some years ago Beth sustained major disfiguring injuries as a result of being bitten on the face by a dog in an unprovoked attack. Kisses was to be HER therapy, to get over the trauma of the attack So reach out to your friends during this holiday season. You never know where it will take you and them. Shows and trials are only a part of what our canine companions have to offer www.miamiobedienceclub.org3 1

DECEMBER BRAGS And Birthday Wishes to Sylvia Arango and Laurie Zisman Liu s Family at the 2012 AKC Agility Invitational in Orlando Look at all those dark pink ribbons each one represents a qualifying run at the 2012 AKC Agility Invitational In the past, we made jokes about borrowing the ribbons to display for picture, but this year we did bring home 10 ribbons (including two green T2B ribbons not showing in the photo) and one Top Dog medallion. Even though AKC said Jody is the #6 dog, her performance proved that she deserved to be invited. She had a perfect 400 score and ranked 20th in the 20 class (total 108 dogs). Queenie missed the A-frame contact in Round 4. She had 395 points (3 qualifying run with one third place) and ranked 25th in the 24 class (total 142 dogs). She also won the Top Malinois medallion. We both agreed that Queenie deserves to have one. From the proud parents of Jody and Queenie, Wien and Peter From Debbie Russell: Katie got her CDX at the GMDC trial a couple of weeks ago Yeah Katie Debbie Willey reports: Dinah and I earned 2 (obedience) Versatility legs in December - one at the South Dade Kennel Club trial in Davie and the 2nd one at the Greater Miami Dog Club trial. 2012$Obedience$Invitationals$ by#carol#clark# As many of you know, I was honored to be chosen to volunteer at the 2012 National Obedience Invitational. I hesitated at first because 1) I d have to leave my dogs at home and 2) that s a lot of money to spend just to volunteer. Fortunately, my decision to go turned out to be the right one. It was exhilarating to see the cream of the crop in Obedience from all over the country (and a few from outside the US). There were eight rings set up, where the teams completed either two or three exercises from Open and Utility in each ring, moving from ring to ring. It had to be grueling, as it was pretty much non-stop all day. Points were deducted and the scores written on a dry-erase board for the audience to see as each team exited the ring. On day one, I was assigned to the Souvenir Table, where I sold catalogs, hats, pins, shirts, etc. The best part was that it was ringside, where I could easily watch the four closest rings. And of course, hundreds of people stopped by to chat. On day two, I was a ring steward for Carol Mett, with Jon Mett as table steward, and Ron Seeley as the other ring steward (GREAT people). Our ring had the retrieve on flat, heel free and figure eight, and the broad jump. Very few dogs had major deductions, and two had perfect scores of zero deductions (the first and second place winners). The precision of these dog and handler teams was amazing. Most of the sits were perfectly straight, and the heeling looked like the dogs were tied to the handler s left legs by a six-inch string. Almost all the dogs were in a sit as the handler s final foot came to a stop. Awe-inspiring, to say the least Possibly the best part of the weekend was the social aspect. The AKC, like MOC, knows how to feed its volunteers I had dinner and lunches with all the other volunteers, the judges, and the AKC staff. I learned a lot by listening and watching, and the food was amazing, right down to linen tablecloths and napkins. I also had the opportunity to walk around the massive building and watch some agility, conformation, and dock diving, and look at the Meet the Breeds booths. It was exciting to see our very own Wien and Peter, and many others we see at local agility trials. I drove home exhausted, but mostly inspired to achieve at least half the excellence that I witnessed in Orlando. Two thumbs up for the AKC National Obedience Invitational www.miamiobedienceclub.org3 11
