Now that spring is finally here, we can all enjoy the warmer days and lighter evenings. We've had a great start to our Big Bark Appeal to build new kennels for the dogs in our care. In the autumn, we held our first ever fundraising ball and several of our kennel staff, along with a team of other supporters, took to the skies to skydive from 15000 feet to kick-start the campaign! We still have a long way to go to but we know that with your help, we will realise the dream of providing new kennels. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far, we are grateful for your support. We had a great winter of events including a sponsored dog walk, the Christmas Giving Evening, the annual pet service and more recently, Muddy Mutts. We would like to thank everyone who attended, participated and / or donated - your kindness and generosity in helping the animals is special and is something that we never take for granted. There have been some heart-breaking cases of neglected animals arriving at the Rescue Centre recently, including the sad story of several abandoned rabbits that you can read about in this issue. Thanks to the wonderful care provided by our rabbit and guinea pig team, there is a happy ending for three of the rabbits. This type of case illustrates the desperate need for new pet owners to be given the correct care information when first acquiring pets. To this end we always provide comprehensive care information and ongoing support for rehomers of animals from the Rescue Centre. In addition this year, we will launch the first of a series of advice and information open days, to provide education and welfare advice for pet owners on how to best care for their pets. We were extremely saddened to learn in early March that one of our Trustees, Gordon Gooding, had passed away suddenly. On behalf of all the Trustees, the staff and volunteers at Animals in Distress, we would like to extend our sincere condolences to Gordon's wife and family. Gordon made a huge contribution to the Charity over many years and he will be greatly missed by us all. This year is a very special one for us as it's the 25th Anniversary of our Rescue Centre in Ipplepen. We acquired the former Greyhound racing kennels in 1994 and the centre has undergone a complete transformation since that time. We will mark this milestone at our special 25th Anniversary Fun Day on 1st September 2019, and everyone is welcome to come along and celebrate with us! The events raised a combined total in excess of 1500 and our Christmas grotto was filled to the rafters with all your kind gifts to the animals. Thank you so much for your incredible support, as always. Evening opening The rescue centre will once again stay open until 6.30 p.m. every Wednesday from 1st May 2019, throughout the spring and summer. Our summer opening hours will be 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. every day except Wednesdays when we will be open 10 a.m. - 6.30 p.m. Thank you Pets at Home! Throughout December at the Newton Abbot Pets at Home store shoppers were invited to donate an extra 50p with their purchase to buy a dinner for a homeless pet at Christmas. This was part of the Santa Paws fundraiser organised by the charity Support Adoption for Pets and the store raised enough funds over the month to pay for almost 9000 pets dinners. Half of all the funds raised was donated to our rescue centre and thanks to the generosity of its customers, the store presented us with a cheque for an incredible 2236.08! A huge thank you to all the store colleagues and everyone who donated - the money will make a very big difference to the animals in our care. Rescue Centre 25th Anniversary This year marks the 25th Anniversary of our wonderful rescue centre! It's hard to believe it's 25 years since we were lucky enough to acquire the former Greyhound racing kennels in Ipplepen and make the site our own. Thanks to your support we have been able to help many thousands of animals over the years and to celebrate we will be holding a 25th Anniversary Bash! This will all take place at our Family Fun Day on Sunday 1st September this year, so please keep the date in your diary! This will be a very special day and will mark exactly 25 years to the day our rescue centre was officially opened on 1st September 1994. More details to be announced soon! In fond memory of Gordon Gooding We are sorry to announce the sad news that one of our Trustees, Gordon Gooding passed away suddenly in March at the age of 78. Gordon had been a Trustee of Animals in Distress since 2006 and made a huge contribution to the running of the Charity over the years, for which we are extremely thankful. He will be much missed by us all. 3

News Muddy Mutts 2019 News On Sunday 24th February 63 dogs and their owners got extremely muddy at our 2nd Muddy Mutts Sponsored Dog Walk at the River Dart Country Park. Everyone had a wonderful time and raised nearly 3000 to help the homeless dogs in our care. Dumped and left to die In December a litter of baby pet rats just a few weeks old were dumped near to our charity shop in Newton Abbot and many people spotted them wandering about in the town, trying to survive the freezing weather. Some were killed by cats and poison, but two volunteers caught the three survivors and brought them to the rescue centre. Even though rats aren't normally one of the species of animal that we rehome, in this special case we cared for them and made sure they received veterinary treatment for some serious injuries. All the babies recovered from their ordeal and are now in a loving home. Dates for your diary We will be out and about this summer at all of the following events - and more. Dogs build homes - help us build theirs The number of homeless dogs needing our help is increasing but our existing kennels are no longer fit for purpose. They are extremely difficult and expensive to keep warm in the winter and equally hard to keep cool in the summer. We do not have access to any suitable indoor training space and there are no quiet kennels for the more nervous dogs. We want to provide the dogs who come into our care each year with an improved environment that meets the highest welfare standards and allows them to reach their full potential in a warm and safe space, whilst waiting for their forever home. With your help, the dogs in our care will have 28 spacious and comfortable kennels with underfloor heating and an air cooling system. Strapped to flying instructors for the tandem skydives, their adrenaline-fuelled efforts raised an incredible 3600. Clare Meir, Kennel Manager, said: "I have a real fear of heights and when my colleagues proposed this as a team fundraiser it filled me with dread! But for the sake of giving the dogs in our care the best possible facilities I was determined to face my fears. Going up in the plane and then dangling my legs out of the door at 15000 feet was surreal but the jump was incredible. It was so beautiful and I would definitely do it again!" It is hard work raising the money, but it was worth it. I raised over 500 for the Big Bark campaign and it was doing something I really enjoyed. "If anyone gets the chance to support Animals in Distress and their skydive, DO IT!! You will not regret it - I am off to sign myself up for next year." All of our skydivers have moved us one step closer to our dream of new kennels - they were all so brave and we are so grateful. Cover story Contains references to extreme neglect and euthanasia Cruelty case bunnies...... now in loving home Anyone thinking of taking on a new pet should first research the care they will need - and this is never more so than with rabbits. Despite being the third most popular pet in the UK, rabbits are among the most abused and neglected, mostly because owners don t realise what s involved before taking them on. Colleen, Bert and Bernie are in fine health now, but when they arrived at the rescue centre after being found dumped with their brother Rolo, they were in a very sorry state. Debbie Hands, Rabbit and Guinea Pig Manager explains: "Sadly all four rabbits were extremely matted and neglected - we had never seen mats so big on any animal. Rolo had a severe flesh wound around his left leg which smelt infected. We took the four rabbits straight over to our vet, who found Rolo's wound to be much worse than we had thought. "One of the most shocking cases of neglect we have ever seen." Poor Rolo - the kindest option was to put him to sleep "Rolo's leg had become caught in a piece of knotted fur, and had been stuck there so long that the blood supply had been cut off causing the leg to die. As our vet lifted the necrotic leg we could see maggots in the flesh under poor Rolo s armpit. Rolo was very subdued and already very ill, suffering from toxic shock. It was decided that the kindest option was to put the poor boy to sleep and out of his misery. "This was one of the most shocking and unnecessary neglect cases we have seen here, and it affected all of us deeply. The only comfort we could take was that Rolo was no longer suffering. What's worse is that this tragedy could have been so easily prevented by regular grooming. Long-haired rabbits need regular grooming to keep them mat-free and this is so easy to achieve with a bit of regular care. "The other three rabbits were shaved and the matted fur and dried faeces we removed weighed as much as the rabbits. It was a miracle that these three didn't have flystrike; sadly it was probably because all the flies had concentrated on Rolo. "We named the trio Bernie, Bert and Colleen. After several months of loving care and lots of grooming from our team, all three bunnies were offered a loving home by a lovely lady called Jenny and her two children Harry and Phoebe. "Thankfully, Colleen, Bert and Bernie can now put their awful past behind them and look forward to a much better future." "Bernie, Bert and Colleen have settled so well into our home and the children love them. They are house rabbits with the run of the whole house when we re in and they can go out to play in the garden when the weather s good. All three are very affectionate and they love to run and binky around our living room! Meet the rabbit and guinea pig team A career with animals can be very rewarding, but also heart-breaking and very hard work. Debbie Hands talks about her life as the Rabbit and Guinea Pig Department Manager at our busy rescue centre. Doug Happy Endings Knowing that a rescued animal is now living a wonderful life is the best feeling ever. What made you decide to work with animals? "I knew I wanted to work with animals from primary school age. I was only ever interested in school lessons if they were animalrelated. I had several pets while growing up - rabbits, guinea pigs and rats. When I left school I worked at a dog boarding kennel and studied for a small animal certificate course. I've owned 4 rescue dogs since then and I've worked in rescue for over 20 years." What do you love about your job? "I love working with lovely rabbits and guinea pigs, and also that no two days in the department are ever the same! I love that we take in unwanted rabbits and guinea pigs and find them happy, loving forever homes. Most of the animals have been purchased for children who have then lost interest in them and the parents don't have enough time to look after them either. When adopters come in looking for a new addition to their family and we know the animals in our care will go off to have a wonderful new life, that's what makes it all feel so worthwhile." What can be difficult about working in animal rescue? Debbie with Dickens the guinea pig "Doug was overlooked and in Animals in Distress for 10 months before we found him and brought him home. Obviously he had been looked after so well by the staff and volunteers. "Doug is still not sure of other dogs but absolutely loves his walks. He sleeps in the bed with us and he loves the chair which he and I race to sit on first! "He's very clever and is now learning how to get his lead and harness out of his wicker basket when it's time for his walk. "We could not have picked a more loving and softy dog. "Doug we love you." - Belinda and Chris Photo: Lucy D Photography "What's most difficult is when animals come in who have been neglected. Rabbit and guinea pigs can be the most mistreated of our domestic pets - they are often left down at the bottom of the garden in hutches with little human contact. People sometimes purchase them on a whim, thinking they are an easy pet for children. We have had rabbits and guinea pigs brought in with untreated skin, dental and other medical issues. Sometimes we are able to nurse them back to health, but occasionally it's too late by the time they come in to us. The cases where we can't rehome them for a better life are very upsetting." What is one of your happiest memories in your job? "One of the happiest memories has to be when Colleen, Bernie and Bert went to their lovely new home. They arrived in such a terrible state, but over the next few months we groomed them every other day and they slowly began to look as beautiful as they should have. We also started to see their personalities come through and they became firm favourites among the staff and volunteers here. When someone came forward willing to adopt all three together we were all thrilled to bits, and knowing they are now living such a wonderful life is the best feeling ever." Happy Endings From feral... Brix Last year Brix was a feral cat, fending for herself and her litter of kittens in a Brixham car park. Some local residents and staff from our charity shop were feeding her and eventually a kind volunteer was able to catch and bring Brix and her kittens to us. At the rescue centre the cattery team worked hard to help Brix become accustomed to being with people for the first time and after several months in rescue Brix went to a lovely new home. Brix's new owner Cara explains "Brix needed a little work to help her adjust to her new life, but we expected this after committing to take on a pet in our home. We spent the first week giving her her own room and space with everything she needed, going in and sitting quietly or reading out loud to her to help her get used to our presence. Mispickel "Dear friends, I felt it was time to update you on the progress of my new owners. "I've been practising my stalking skills by playing a game called 'Ambush'. Whenever my owners potter around the house, I sneak up behind a door or a cupboard, then pounce on them as they walk past. Another favourite game is 'Tag'. I silently stalk up behind them and give them a biff with my paw on their ankle - bare legs work best - and then I run off. "I've tried to keep them occupied by playing 'Hide and Seek'. I hide my ping pong ball... they scrabble around on their hands and knees under cupboards and behind the fridge, etc. (Hilarious to watch...) Photo: Lucy D Photography "Next we let her explore the rest of the house whilst we were asleep. Having a routine with food and fuss in the morning and evening after work helped her associate our entrance with something positive. We used the grooming brush, which she loved, to eventually get her to sit on our laps on the sofa. "After only a month, she is a different cat. She loves to wake us up in the morning for cuddles in bed, she comes downstairs to greet me with meows as I come home from work and follows me around the house and she runs around the house like mad at night wanting to play! We are looking forward to how much more she can grow here and seeing more of her personality come through; all it takes is lots of patience, understanding and affection. We did have to put in some hard work, but it is so rewarding to give her the home that she deserves." Brix's story shows how patience and persistence can pay off, and what a difference a loving home makes to an animal that was previously terrified of people. All of Brix's kittens also went to lovely new homes where they are thriving and living happy lives.... to lapcat "I do let them give my chin and that hard-to-reachplace beneath my ear a good scratch. But, if they over step the mark and ignore my flicking tail - I just bite them! (They'll learn...) "I've got a new job. I'm a flame monitor. My job is to sit in front of a roaring log fire and monitor flame quality. I love watching the flames dance, but just occasionally, I find myself nodding off. It's just divine to stretch out your muscles as far as you can reach, whilst the heat from the fire warms your bones. PURRRR! He has invented a great game where he takes slippers and small items from the washing basket, then trades them for treats." - Linda Billy (Baby Boy) "Billy is starting to settle and is showing his noisy, hilarious personality that we absolutely love! His favourite thing to do is tuck himself under the duvet and cuddle up in bed after hours of exploring." - Holly 17

Volunteering Leave a living legacy Iain Proud is an important member of our fundraising team, who volunteers his time and skills every week to help us raise vital funds for the animals in our care. Iain explains: "I really enjoy being part of the fundraising team and I love the variety of the work - one day I will be out helping to run events like Muddy Mutts or the Big Bark Ball, the next day organising a bucket collection at a local store and then back in the office taking care of administration and the fundraising database. "The work is great fun and is also keeping my admin skills up to date! "It's great being based at the rescue centre as even when you're in the office, the animals are never very far away and it's nice to go and visit them at lunch time. "I love the camaradarie and the feeling that I'm making a real difference to the lives of the animals." We are looking for volunteers to help run fundraising events. The role involves helping to clean kennels and runs, feeding, grooming and exercising the dogs as well as helping with their training and socialisation. Bert explains why he decided to volunteer at Animals in Distress: "I have always had a love of all animals, especially dogs, and working with the rescue dogs here can really make a difference to their lives. "I was worried that working here would make me sad, but it hasn't been the case at all. It's such a positive place and the dogs here are so well looked after, that even though they can find it really difficult when they first come in, they tend to bounce back really quickly. The work is really varied and never gets boring, there are always new dogs to meet and to know you've been able to help them on their road to a happy new life is just amazing. "The best part for me is just going into the kennel and spending time with a dog - the moments that you spend with them all make their day happier and that's all a dog really needs - attention and love." I want the money from my lifetime to have a lasting impact on the homeless pets of South Devon for years to come. Dan lives in Devon with his West Highland Terrier Star and has chosen to support Animals in Distress in his Will. This is Dan s story and why the charity is so close to his heart. Everyday my dog Star reminds me of just how special our pets are. She loves unconditionally and would do anything to make me happy she is my very best friend and I am so grateful to have her in my life. Sadly not every dog, cat, rabbit or guinea pig has such a happy story but luckily when things fall apart Animals in Distress is there to help pick up the pieces. So when the time came for me to write my Will, I was asked if I wanted to include a charity legacy and I knew immediately who I wanted to help. I have been a supporter of Animals in Distress for many years, they are a wonderful independent charity and have been part of my local community for as long as I can remember. For me the rescue centre is a place of hope where homeless animals are given a second chance to be happy and find the new forever home they deserve. The facilities are immaculate and the commitment and love that the staff and volunteers show to all the animals while they are at the rescue centre is quite incredible. A gift for the future seems a natural continuation of my support today and I am happy that the money from my lifetime will have a lasting impact on the homeless pets of South Devon for years to come.
