Retriever Review Volume 2, February 2005 February General Meeting Friday, February 18, 2005 at 8:00 PM at Damon s Grill Jantzen Beach 1712 N Jantzen Beach Ctr Portland OR 97217 503-283-3800 Join us at 7 pm for dinner! From the Editor... This month s meeting will be held at Damon s Grill on Jantzen Beach. Along with our regular business meeting we will be having a discussion and demonstration on Rally, the newest AKC titled sport. It is similar yet very different from regular obedience. There is a website that Lisa Rasmussen recommends (www.rallyobedience.com) if you would like to know more about the sport. You can also check out www.akc.org and search for the word rally for the official AKC rules. Be sure to check the newsletter each month for our meeting location. We can no longer use Clackamas Towne Center meeting rooms as they are being remodeled. So our meeting places this year will be rotating from place to place. We have many events coming up in 2005 that our club sponsors. This is a reminder that all of our events rely heavily on volunteer help. Please consider helping out. If you are running a dog at our HRT or WC, we can coordinate it so that you can run your dog and you can also help at the event. The specialty requires a lot of effort to set up and tear down each day. So take a look at the items listed in Upcoming Events on the last page of this newsletter and see if there is an event where you can help! New Member Kathie Garner 7316 NE 16th Ave #10 Vancouver, WA 98665 360-694-1309 Proposed Members Valerie Jones 468 E Hwy 81 Burley, ID 83318 (208) 678-1624 On a personal note I have recently started taking Novice obedience classes with one of my Labs using the clicker method of training versus the traditional choke chain. The choke chain method has worked for me since I got my first Lab in the 70 s until I met my chocolate Lab Amber. She was getting more stubborn with each correction using a choke chain and I was at a loss on her training until I heard about the clicker method. Amber is responding well using the clicker method. She has already learned touch and other words. We have a ways to go, but hopefully you will see me with Amber in the obedience ring in the future. Just a reminder that any articles, brags and litter listings need to be to me by the 25th of the month to give me time to typeset the newsletter. I appreciate any files sent in Word as this saves me time retyping. I hope to see you at our next meeting! I can hear the cookie jar miles away. If a fly is bugging you, eat it. Scary! some dogs don t have tails.. I hope mine doesn t fall off. If you don t like the food, spit it out. Your home is your bed. Bad hair day... mirrors are for humans. My chin becomes a weapon when I sneeze. The sun is my clock. If you don t feel right go out and eat some grass, find a rug, then puke. I can t figure out who No! is. He must not be nice because my human friend screams at him a lot. Just one day I would like to taste squirrel. From my view I see a lot of shoes during my lifetime. I follow the path of glorious smells. My leash is the line to my best friend. Being of sound mind (except for Dog Musings Anonymous the matter of cats, squirrels, and strange noise at night.) I give all my worldly goods to my master in my dog will... by this evening you will find the chewed hole in the Persian rug. One day I would like to put a human on a diet. Sometimes my master chases me with a little square box that flashes bright lights into my eyes.. weird. The floor is my kingdom. I found it! - why do I have to give you the used gum. Squeaky toys should have a warning label. Hazard, do not use after midnight. Sitting in the big tree, the neighborhood cat told me the reason birds fly is because they eat worms - I ll keep digging, one day I might find that worm. I m so friendly when I m wet. You don t fool me while I m sleeping, I can still hear those car keys. My master creates winter in the summer, just for me!, frozen water - ice cubes, a big puddle - wading pool, a nice wind - fan, rain - sprinkler, refreshing, blowing, refrigerator air - the vent. It s weird when I eat flavored steam - I see it, but it disappears in my mouth. A dog day is 168 hours long, no wonder I need lots of naps! Test for Canine IBD From Dog World March 2005 Swiss researchers have found for the first time that the same tests used to diagnose inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in humans can also be used to diagnose IBD in dogs. The tests have been shown to be helpful for the diagnosis of IBD in people for about a decade. This is the first report that these assays also work for dogs with chronic diarrhea. The assays detect antibodies in the dog s blood. This test might help vets in the future to diagnose noninvasively. 124 dogs of various ages and breeds were tested, 39 with IBD. 6

New Canine Reproduction Service OSU Veterinary Journal - Fall 2004 Beginning in January 2005, the College of Veterinary Medicine will offer a canine reproduction service as part of many referral services offered within the new Small Animal Teaching Hospital. The fertility and infertility service will offer artificial insemination with cooled, shipped, and frozen semen; pregnancy diagnosis with ultrasonography; semen collection; and evaluation and freezing. Complete breeding soundness examinations for both female and male dogs will also be offered. Research in canine reproduction is an important part of the reproduction program within the College of Veterinary Medicine. In collaboration with Dr. Mike Peterson, associate veterinarian at Reid Animal Hospital in Albany, Oregon, Dr. Kutzler is investigating the efficacy of using a long-acting injectable, gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog for estrus induction in breeding female dogs. Preliminary results indicate this is an easy and reliable method for manipulating the estrous cycle in dogs, which could be easily applied in a small animal clinical practice. Also being studied is the effects of airport radiation on canine semen quality. Briefly semen from male dogs with normal fertility is collected. It is passed through an airport luggage scanner at Portland International Airport. Following radiation exposure, alterations in sperm motility, morphology and DNA structure are determined. February General Meeting Friday February 18, 2005 At Damon s Grill 1712 N Jantzen Beach Center Portland, Oregon 503-283-3800 Across from Target at Jantzen Beach Shopping Center Meeting starts 8 PM sharp!
