MPDBA NEWSLETTER Written by: Jill Crisp December 2018 NEXT MEETING December 20 - at the Libby Conference Center Minnesota State Fairgrounds John & Barb will provide food, festive and inviting. December 2018 greetings from your president. Greetings to all! Judy Dove is the chair of the Nominating Committee. Remember to contact her if you would like to be on the Board this coming year. The date of our annual meeting is Feb 10, 2019. Dr. Margaret Duxbury, Veterinary Specialties of Minnesota will be our speaker. It looks to be a great day. Please invite folks from your dog clubs to attend and learn about how they may benefit from a Minnesota Purebred membership. This is the time of year for giving thanks and giving back. When donations are made to local food shelves, many times pets are forgotten. Our Dakota County food shelf loves it when Barb and I bring in dog and cat food. Please remember those pets whose love and companionship is helping people get through hard times. The food shelf also loves to get those paper bags with handles. Our meetings will continue to be at the Libby Conference Center next year. Happy Holidays and see you at the Libby Center on the 20 th of December. John Armour sundog4@popp.net

MINUTES Minutes of MPDBA Board Meeting November 15, 2018 Called to Order 7:02 pm by John Armour at Libby Center, Fairgrounds Attendance: Board members present: John Armour, Barb Bartholomew, Nona Dietrich, Kris Hassig, Bobby Moore-Reibel, Wendy Olson, Carol Ouhl, Lois Walton, Board Members Absent: Judy Dove, Cinda Waller Members Present: Barb Armour, Rose Hallman, Briana Klecker, Bill Lozito, Adam, Alyssa & Daisy Morris, Diane Prange Guests: Christie and Bryan Aase, Celia Vaerst Reports: President: John reminded everyone that our third Thursday in December meeting will be at the Armours in West St. Paul. Our first meeting of 2019 will be the Annual Membership Meeting which is in February. The Fair has notified us that the Libby Center will not be available for us 2019. The Fair will provide us space in another building on the grounds. John will inquire the reason for the change and where we will meet The Board gives a HUGE thank you to Krista Peterson for tackling the daunting task of creating our 2018-2019 member directory. Krista also saved our club approx. $2200.00 thru her contacts for printing. Everyone attending the November meeting helped stuff, label and stamp the envelopes to mail out the directories all vet clinics in MN. Secretary: Carol moved; Kris 2nd to accept minutes as printed in newsletter. Carried unanimously. Carol mentioned that she had emailed our newsletter editors asking them to add to their list of Show Superintendents "Dog Shows by Design" as that is where a high percentage of local obedience & rally shows are listed.

Treasurer: Lois provided the report via email for our review prior to the meeting and noted that "we have money". Oct. beginning balance was $29,257.15; ending balance $27,487.19. She passed around thank you notes and pictures from the 4H youngsters who won trophies we donated for their state show. A couple youngsters said this was their first trophy and they would not have been able to earn one if it had not been for our donation. Lois noted she received a letter from our insurance agent/agency advising us they have been a family business for 60 years and are now merging Alliance Insurance Advisor. The new agency will reach out to us before our policy is due for renewal in April. Carol moved; Barb B 2nd motion to accept Treasurer's report. Carried unanimously. Committees: Membership: Barb A Introduced Member Applicants - Christie and Bryan Aase (pronounced Acey) from Savage. They have Puli's which is a very old Hungarian non-shedding, herding breed and very popular in that country. Their dog's pedigrees are in Hungarian so it will take them a little time to get their AKC registration. They do not breed; are interested in agility, herding and therapy dog. Bryan gave us a little history education on the breed. It takes several hours to groom a Puli after the cords come. They are not born with cords and the predominant color is black; white is more rare. As far as they are aware there are only 9 Puli breeders in the U.S. Everyone at the meeting introduced themselves. This is their first reading / publishing. Barb read the joint Member Application from Peggy Simerson and Craig Carson of Star Prairie, WI. They show German Shepherds in conformation and at the State Fair. They have been active in the German Shepherd Club of Mpls/St. Paul since 1997. This is their first reading / publishing. Annual Meeting: Barb B confirmed the meeting is Feb 10, 2019 at Helping Paws in Hopkins. Helping Paws is one of our honorary members. Denise Nord, has worked closely with Dr Margaret Duxbury, DVM, DACVB and will introduce her. Barb will be meeting with Diane and Bill to produce an announcement flyer. Barb B currently has 5 to 8 vendors interested in a table at our meeting. We do not charge for vendor tables. Kris H confirmed she will prepare the food. Members should bring a dish to share. Wendy asked that we all begin working on door prizes

Website: Diane reported the Annual Meeting notice is already on our website. She and Barb B are working on a project for the meeting. They had previously asked members to send them pictures from the State Fair. Diane noted she received pictures from 7 members. Junior Handler Program: Wendy noted the September 29 seminar had excellent turnout with some from north of Duluth. Kids weren't bored; they had lots of activities. The parents were very engaged The committee is making a list of things to improve and / or add for next year. Avoid scheduling during homecoming, prom and winter dance. Have a list of names and bios of all the committee and board members to handout for better name recognition of who we are. Find a new venue. Committee needs more help with set up and take down Wendy thinks we came in pretty close to $1000 expenses and would like to keep that as a target high. Committee does not want to charge admission for families already strained to pay for shows The AKC has just announced allowing 4H conformation at AKC breed shows. 4H needs help especially outstate. Committee members will consider doing educational seminars for adults at shows outside the metro. Often people teaching 4H showmanship outstate have no background in showing. Many times clubs and superintendents will allow reserved chairs at ringside which would help to educate juniors and their families. Sunshine Committee - Wendy will send a sympathy card to Peggy Simerson. Community Outreach - Barb B received a call from Land O'Lakes advertising person that they need $150 by Dec 4 for our ad on the inside front cover. We will be adding to our regular ad information on juniors program. State Fair - John is still compiling a list of our additional concerns to be sent to Krista for discussion with Pam, State Fair supervisor. Rose Hallman and Bobby Moore will take over managing the schedule of people at the front desk. Nona mentioned creating banners for next year listing what breeds at exhibiting. Somehow there was a disconnect within State Fair people sending the contract and money from the Fair to the wrong person. Barb B personally heard the conversation giving the Fair the correct instructions. John will follow up. Nominating Committee: Judy Dove, Chris Gabel and Rose Hallman have agreed to be on the committee. In the absence of Judy and Chris, Rose reported that Judy

had completed a list of 5 questions to be answered by each person running for an office or board seat so that members can have info. Before Judy left town she had forwarded that list to Chris Gabel for review. We discussed that timing of completion of the questionnaire and bios was important to have time to send to the membership. Rose Hallman resigned from the committee as she wants to be on the board. Bylaws do not allow anyone to be on both the nominating committee and run for board position. We can have up to 3 more new people on the Board to bring us up to our allowed 13. We aren't required to have an odd number of people on the board since the President, John, cannot vote unless there is a tie. Carol noted she had sent Judy a list of which board members were completing the 2nd year of their 2 yr term and which board members would be up for reappointment for a new 2 yr term. We are waiting for confirmation from Judy that all current board members ending their term are willing to take on another 2 yr term beginning in 2019. Old Business: We did not continue the discussion of date changes for our June meeting. New Business: All Committee Reports are due John soon to allow for printing for the Annual Meeting. We asked if the Disaster Trailer could again be at the Fair. John noted that (a) the Trailer is always at the St. Croix Valley Shows that occur at the same time as the State Fair (b) The Fair needs to do extra scheduling / planning for space to display it. In light of all the wildfires, floods and hurricanes, Nona moved that we donate $500 to the AKC Disaster Relief Fun. Kris 2nd. Carried unanimously. Barb B asked that the website provide a link to where we donated. Lois noted that our storage locker still has a lot of breed specific items. We do not want to give them as door prizes at the annual meeting again this year as that did not work well last year. People won breed specific items for breeds they didn't have. Several ideas were discussed. It was decided we would give it to the respective breed clubs locally. Adjourn: Barb B moved; Nona 2nd to adjourn at 8:03 pm.

Mark your Calendar You don t want to miss the annual meeting Annual Meeting on Feb 10 at Helping Paws in Hopkins Meeting starts at noon. Workin Dogs will perform. We will have vendors. Food being prepared by Kris Hassig. MPDBA are encouraged to bring a guest. Donations for our Door prizes are welcome.
