AKC National Owner-Handler Series The AKC National Owner-Handled Series is a non-titling competition for dogs that are exhibited by their owners that are not professional handlers. All dogs that are owner-handled and are not solely owned or exhibited by professional handlers*meet the requirements for this competition. Exhibitors must declare their dog is Owner-Handled eligible at the time of entry using the checkbox on the entry form. The handler must be an owner of record according to the AKC s records as of the date of the show. Eligible dogs will be identified by an asterisk in the steward s book and the catalog. Dogs must be handled throughout the competition by an eligible owner. Professional handlers, household members and assistants to current professional handlers may not exhibit the dog in any competition during the entire show. Owner-Handler Best of Breed will be selected from the dogs that are eligible to compete in the Best of Breed competition including Winners Dog, Winners Bitch and winners of the non-regular classes. If the Best of Breed winner is Owner-Handled competition eligible, it will automatically be Owner-Handled Best of Breed. If the Best of Breed winner is not eligible for Owner-Handled competition and the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed is eligible, the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed will compete against the eligible exhibits of the other sex to determine Owner-Handled Best of Breed. If neither the Best of Breed nor the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed are Owner-Handled competition eligible and Select Dog and Select Bitch are both eligible, the judge is to choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the Selects and eligible Winners Dog or Winners Bitch. If one of the Selects is eligible, excuse all champions and non-regular class winners of the same sex and then choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the remaining dogs of the opposite sex including the eligible winner. If Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed, Select Dog and Select Bitch are not eligible, the judge may choose any eligible dog remaining in the ring including Winners Dog or Winners Bitch as Owner-Handled Best of Breed. DON T FORGET TO CHECK THE OWNER-HANDLED BOX ON THE ENTRY FORM. *Professional handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay or received payment for handling a dog within the last five years. An AKC Registration Number or AKC Litter Number is required for entry. A foreign born dog may enter this class if they are registered in the country of origin. Dogs are required to be vaccinated (including rabies) in accordance with their veterinarian s protocol. All of the puppies are exhibited in the same class and the only placements are Best of Breed (BOB) and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed (BOS). Dogs that are owned or co-owned by a professional handler may compete in this class, but must be handled by a non-professional handler. Professional handlers are not permitted to exhibit in this class. Professional handlers

are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay. The judge must choose only one Best of Breed and one Best of Opposite Sex. The awarding of an Award of Merit acknowledges that this animal was under consideration for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex. The judge is indicating his recognition of an exceptional animal who could, on another day, merit a top award. At the discretion of the judge, an Award of Merit may be given to up to 10% of the number of Specials entered at the time of closing; the number entered will disregard all absentees and transfers from the classes. All those entered for Best of Breed competition, plus Winners Dog, Winners Bitch, 1 st place Hunting Dog, 1 st place Hunting Bitch, 1 st place Veteran Dog and 1 st place Veteran Bitch (each age division), shall be eligible to receive an Award of Merit, except for the Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed winners.
