Life Cycle of a Goose
Egg The main egg-laying period for geese is in the spring, commencing about August or September. Geese typically lay around one egg a day until they have a clutch of around five to nine eggs. While geese can lay as many as 25 eggs a year, geese have a difficult time sitting on more than nine or 10 eggs at a time. Once a goose is done laying eggs, she settles in for the incubation period, while her mate stays close by and guards the nest.
Chick in Egg Birds begin growing inside an egg with a hard shell. A baby chick grows inside the egg for 21 days.
Hatching A baby chick hatches with soft down (not feathers), is able to see, can walk, eat and drink by itself shortly after hatching.
Gosling to Adult Goose Adult Goose gosling The term goose applies to the female in particular, while gander applies to the male in particular. Young birds before fledging are called goslings. The collective noun for a group of geese on the ground is a gaggle; when in flight, they are called a skein, a team, or a wedge; when flying close together, they are called a plump.
Fun Goose Facts Mother geese build nests near lakes and rivers. The nests are flat, wide and made from grass, twigs, mud and feathers. The babies are fluffy, yellow and adorable! Baby geese can walk and swim a day or two after they re born. Some geese migrate every year. Others stay in the same place year round. Geese eat seeds, nuts, grass, plants and berries. They love blueberries. Geese can live almost anywhere. They like fields, parks and grassy areas near water. Geese fly in a V formation. If one goose is injured, other geese will stay with it until it dies or can rejoin the flock. Geese are sometimes raised like chickens for their meat or eggs. Male geese protect the nest while the female geese sit on the eggs.
Fun Goose Facts Geese weight: 20-25 pounds. Life span: 25 years. The goose eats mainly grains, snails, frogs and small animals. Geese have a strong urge to return to their place of birth, Adult geese lose their flight and tail feathers each year which is called molting. The goose spends most of the day foraging for food. The goose will honk as a form of communication. Migratory geese will fly up to 3,000 miles to return to their place of birth. The parents lead their goslings to the safety of open water within 24 hours of birth. Males are called gander. Females are called goose. Babies are called goslings.
