President s Message JACK GRASSA Sharon Fremer Ramapo Kennel Club Officers President Sharon Fremer teneo@mac.com Vice President Amy Starost Treasurer Ruth Henningsen Recording Secretary Kim Luikert Corresponding Secretary Tilly Grassa tgcreative@aol.com Board of Directors 2017 Elaine Barone Lorraine Fennemore Janis Hayes 2018 Melissa Ayer Sue Leonard Gerrie Oliver AKC Delegate Jeffrey David Ball Our annual election was held last month. Thank you very much for allowing me to be your president for another 2 years. I am honored and I look forward to working with all of you to continue Ramapo Kennel Club s commitment to purebred dogs and their place in our lives. Welcome to new board member Sue Leonard. I have come to know Sue at our Obedience classes. She has great dog sense as well as excellent ideas about how to propel our club forward in the coming years she will contribute much to Ramapo in her new role. Welcome back to Melissa Ayer and Gerrie Oliver who happen to also be our point show chairman and assistant chairman respectively. Clearly, they are giving much of themselves to the club in these roles. I believe this board will accomplish a lot for our club in the next 2 years, but we can t do it without ALL our members pitching in. Each of us has unique talents to bring to the table. Give some thought to how you can help Ramapo be the best it can be; then act on it. Everyone on this board is happy to speak with you about your ideas for the club and to help make them reality. Our match show will be held this Saturday, June 4th. The weather promises to be good and we have a wonderful panel of obedience and conformation judges joining us. Please come out to support the club and help make this another stellar RKC event. Details may be found elsewhere in the Growl. Let Fred Hachtel, match show chairman, that you re coming and how you d like to help. It is always a fun day for everyone involved. Our annual awards dinner on Wednesday, June 9th, will be held at the Paris Inn on Alps Road in Wayne, NJ. If you would like to join us but have not yet let Lorraine Fennemore know, please contact her right away. Members dine for free and guests must pay $30. Elaine Barone puts many hours of effort into this every year, please come to recognize the recipients and help them celebrate. I hope to see everyone there! My male Cardigan Corgi was diagnosed with Lyme last night. I wasn t surprised. He d been acting off, so I took him in to be tested as I suspected it might be Lyme. What did surprise me was that he has it when I have found almost no ticks on either of my dogs this year, in spite of hearing that the tick population has been particularly bad. I may try the relatively new Seresto collars, as Frontline hasn t been successful for us. Several friends have had good luck with the collars. If you have a tried and true routine to keep ticks and fleas away, please share it with our members. We can all benefit from your experience. And, by the way, the CDC reports that animals do not appear to be affected by the Zika virus. This is good news for all of us, but particularly for anyone breeding during the summer months. As always, our meetings will take the summer off. They resume on September 14th; same time, same place. We re working on lining up some good presentations. If you have someone you d like to see on the schedule, please let me know and I ll do my best to get them. If you can provide names and contact details, that s even better. Enjoy the summer!
