English Language Arts/Literacy Today you will read a passage about a man named Angelo who finds an injured pigeon. Then you will answer questions and write a narrative story. Read the passage from Angelo. Then answer the questions. from Angelo by David Macaulay 1 As Angelo cleared away the tangle of sticks and feathers left along the ledges of the old church by generations of thoughtless pigeons, he peered into every nook and cranny looking for cracks. They would all have to be repaired before he could apply a new coat of stucco. 2 At first he mistook her for just another abandoned nest. 3 What s this? He moved in for a closer look. She was small, barely breathing. 4 What are you doing here? He tried coaxing her with the end of his broom. 5 Come on. You can t stay there. I ve got work to do. GO ON

English Language Arts/Literacy 6 But she did stay there, so he worked around her. 7 At the end of the day, he scooped the helpless creature up in his hat and set off for home, hoping to find someplace to leave her along the way. He was still carrying her when he reached his own front door. 8 Okay. Just one night, he grumbled. But you sleep on the terrace. 9 When he noticed a large cat cleaning its paws on a nearby roof, he brought her back into the apartment. 10 Mamma mia! I restore walls, not pigeons. 11 He continued complaining as he made her bed. 12 In spite of the demands of his work, not to mention his professional dislike for pigeons, Angelo soon found himself devoting all his spare time to her recovery. 13 When she was strong enough, he started taking her to work. GO ON

English Language Arts/Literacy 14 On sunny weekends he drove her out into the countryside to recuperate among the ancient ruins and majestic pines. 15 In the evenings, he introduced her to his favorite music. 16 With this kind of attention, it wasn t long before she was completely recovered. One morning after breakfast, as he left for the church, she disappeared over the rooftops. From ANGELO by David Macaulay, Houghton Mifflin Company. 2002. GO ON

A1 Score Point 3 He grew very attached to the pigeon. When Angelo came back, he called for the pigeon. He realized that she had left. "Good riddance," he sighed, "I hope that silly bird never comes back!" But deep down inside of him, he felt sad that his feathered friend left him. On sunny weekends he drove out into the countryside by himself, wondering what had happened to his beloved pigeon. In the evenings, he played his favorite music all alone, but still that didn't make him feel better. He looked at the bed he had made for her and an intense rush of deep sadness rushed over him. He was just about to flop onto his bed, weeping, when he got a call from a woman who needed her roof fixed. "Yes, ma'am, I'll be right over..." He groaned. He hung up and lumbered over to the door when he remembered something the woman had said, There's also a pigeon on my roof, she seems very depressed, can you catch her for me? Suddenly Angelo grew a smile on his face and nearly skipped the door with all of his equipment to the woman's house. Once he arrived, the woman was waiting for him. "Yes, hi, the crack is on the top left part of the roo-" She got interrupted. "Great, nice to meet you, I'll be right up there!" said a joyous Angelo. He took his ladder and bounced on up to the roof. There, he saw a frightened looking pigeon, the pigeon. Angelo scooped her up into an enormous hug. After he was finished with the woman's roof, he took the pigeon home and played her his favorite music. Life for Angelo and the pigeon was great and the pigeon seemed very happy back in her forever home. The End

A2 Score Point 3 I stepped over on the side of the grass and slowly sat down. I watched as she vanished over the roof and into the sky. She did not look back nor anything else. She did not care that I helped her. All she cared about was that she was up in the clouds. I then got back on my feet and did just as she had. I vanished out of her life. But the thing is that my body was out of her life but my soul refused to leave the warm, comfort of her. When I was finally in the church I sat down on the first free bench my eyes came upon. But my mind skipped all the thoughts of church. I could not help but hope that she would come flying through the door. She didn't. I sat in the room where she used to sleep in her bed. I did not pick up a book or get up to eat supper. All I did was sit and watch. The last thing I remember in that day was the thought that she would be back. Of course she did not come back. She never would. My life never came back to the way it was either. But it was all for the best. If she would had stayed then I would still have my heart broken. She would not have stayed for me but for what I do. In a way he spared me a broken heart by giving me a broken heart.

A3 Score Point 2 Ding dong ding dong the church bells were ringing. Angelo was in the church choir since he sang like an angel. After he was done church he couldnt stop thinking about the pigeon he saved. He was upset since he had taken good care of the bird. He had a blue face when he looked at the the little bed he made for the pigeon and was even more sad. He decided that he wanted to take care of animals for a living. The next day he bought his own animal shelter or also known as Angelo's rescuing shelter for all pets. When he had his first customer he was so excited. He knew exactly how to care for it and healed in 10 minutes. His busniess started to rise. That night when her got home from work he imagined where the pigeon was now. He hoped that it was in a good home. The next day he woke up and started to make breakfeast. When he set the plate down he looked out the window and saw the pigeon. He was in good shape and not in harms way. He was shocked that the bird came back. He could imagine what it was saying. Probaly like Thank you for taking care of me. Or maybe I cant explain my graditude for you, Thank you. The bird waved with his wing and flew away. Angelo was still in shock after the bird left. He drove to work and was happy all through out the day. He hired 5 workers that day. They all worked good together. Then from that day forward he rescued pets and healed them for the rest of his life until he retired.

A4 Score Point 2 5 months later when Angelo was working he sees pigeon on the street injured again. He stops what his doing and goes to pick him up again. He takes him home so he can help him recover. This time his wings are broken. This time I take him to a bird vet. The vet says that his injures are bad and that he will not be able to fly any more. When I heard that I was scared. That meant that I would have to take care of him he rest of my life. When I get home I will have to go on the internet to get information on how to raise a pigeon bird. Three hours later I got each information to be able to rasie the pigeon. First thing I have to do is to rap his wings. Next I have to feed it bird food. Last thing I have to do is wait for him to sleep. I do this over and over and over again. Finally it was the day I unrap the wings. Then all of a sudden he flys up in the air. It is a mircle and know I can let him go again. Hop you don't get hurt again.

Then he notced the window was open and he dashed over to it he looked down to find that his pigeon did not fall and die but flew away. Later that evening Angelo looked out his window, a feather was floating down, it entered the room. Angelo caught the feather and put it on the shelf and studied it. P101 from Angles every day Angelo clears out feters and leves. One day there was a girl sitting in qa lage crack and the man said get out of ther, I need to do my work. Then the man worked around her well sweeping off leves and feters. Then he finali took her home.

Angelo returned from his work and slowly trudged up the stairs. He opened the door and looked over to the pigeon bed she had flown away. The next day when Angelo went to work at the church he found himself searching for lost or hurt birds. Angelo finished his work at the church walking home he found himself as a different person. One who cared deeply fir all living things. He then decided to go to the animal shelter and adopt a bird. From then on he loved having the company of aroundhim. From then on whenever he saw a bird in need he would pick it up and put it in his hat and take it home. And help it recover. P102

I think if the story keeps going on I think that the pigeon maybe always visit Angelo everyday like breakfeast, lunch, or dinner. The pigeon might even visit him at work. This is what I think will happen if the story had an continuation. So when the pigeon flew away I think he mightive made himself a home or whatever to like live in. Then when it was night the pigeon spent its night at its house. When it became morning since I don't think the pigeon has any food to eat cause she just built the house. What I think will happen is the it might fly to Angelo to have breakfeast with him and to not make him feel lonely. So after that I think that the pigeon went to work with Angelo so that maybe the pigeon can help out a little bit. When the sun started setting they both went home to have dinner. After the dinner the pigeon said, ''Goodbye.'' So the pigeon went home and had a good night sleep. P103

Angelo stood there in his front yard and wathched her fly away. A part of him was sad and he didn't know why. He didn't think that he would be this sad to see her go. Besides, he didn't like pigeons in the first place. Angelo sat down in the soft, green grass and thought. He wanted to see her again, but how? How do you get a bird to come back to you? "I have an idea!" said Angelo. He ran into his garage and got out wood, a saw, paint, a tiny metal hook, a piece of string, some nails, and a hammer. He got to work. First he sawed the wood and nailed it together making the shape of a little house. Then he painted it light blue and hammered the little hook on the top of the house. Finally he tied the little string through the hook and ran outside. He had made a birdhouse! Angelo ran over to a nearby tree and hung the birdhouse on a branch. Then he went to the church. Nothing even touched the birdhouse until a couple of months later. One morning Angelo walked outside and saw a pigeon poke its head out of the birdhouse. "Could it be her?" asked Angelo surprised. If it was her then she wouldn't be afraid if Angelo got near her. So he ran over to the birdhouse, his heart pounding. Then very carefully he lifted up his hand and stroked the pigeon's head. It was her, the pigeon that he had helped! He was so excited! He fed her, and spent time with her everyday. He ended up liking pigeons, this one especially! P104

P105 Angelo was surprised to see that the pigeon gone, although he was happy but he had a little deep hole of sorrow in his heart for the gone pigeon. For the last few days Angelo was keeping himself busy with work, but in his heart he knew he had miss the company of the little pigeon. When he came from work he was surprised to see the pigeon peaking his window with it's beak. Angelo quickly ran to the pigeon and open the window, then gently picked the pigeon up with his hands. He knew it was the pigeon he took care of because the pigeon had a strips of white bandage around herlegs. From the next day on he bought a cage for the bird and named her Kylie from days and on. Everywhere Angelo went he went with his pigeon, even to the movie theater... well he actually sneaked the pigeon in there. Angelo and Kylie went on many adventures together... until seven year later kylie died of natural reasons like beaing very old. As for Angelo he missed her very much but moved on with his life later on.
