Getting to Know Your Club Officers Board Members Directors Cindy Miller Hello, I m Cindy Miller, your new President. I want to thank all of you for your willingness to volunteer. I feel so much more comfortable in my new role because your willingness to volunteer is what makes our club so successful. I am so proud to be the President of a truly first-class Dog Club. I think it is important that you know the people behind the scenes that keep this club moving and I m starting with myself! My husband, Rick, and I have been breeding Brittanys since 1985 under the kennel name Brookewood. Our first Brittany came to us from the Humane Society and we immediately fell in love with Brooke (hence our Kennel name). We love Brittanys for their versatility and dual purpose (show and field). Consequently, our dogs, which are all show champions, also hunt pheasant and grouse in the fall. Our dogs have earned hunting, obedience, show, rally, coursing, tracking and agility titles. I am proud to have bred multiple dogs in the Top 10 Breed Rankings and had the number 1 Brittany in breed points in 2013. I have won the American Brittany Club Top 20 People s Choice Award. My obvious love of dog sports and activities have caused me to be involved in many ways in the dog world. I am an active member of the American Brittany Club Judges Education committee and taught seminars at the University of Indiana PA Dog Show Judges Institute, The Mason Dixon Judges Institute, The AKC Sporting Dog Institute (Lancaster, PA), the ABC Summer Specialty (Maine and Michigan) and the AKC Judges Institute at Orlando. I represented the American Kennel Club on Governor Rendall s Dog Law Advisory Board. (2006-2010). I steward at conformation shows approximately one weekend a month. I am an AKC Delegate (21 years and counting) and currently serve as chair on the Dog Show Rules Committee. I am a strong supporter of therapy dog work and volunteer weekly at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center with my therapy dogs. I am inviting everyone to send me an email (cam44@comcast.net). I would like to know what we are doing right and your suggestions for future events/classes. I am also interested in your complaints and concerns. However, I am asking that you include two solutions that s the hard part!! I am also asking that you email me if you would like to volunteer to be on a committee or help out in any way. Our committee chairs can t personally call every member! So, if you want to be a part of a committee, please volunteer and I will let them know!! I am really looking forward to working with you this year. Let s make it a team activity! KC and Cindy Best of Winners at the American Brittany Club 2014 Summer Specialty in Oklahoma City!

D.D.T.C. has a Bite Incident Report Document? Hopefully you have not had to use one, but in the event you do, here s the scoop. If there is a bite incident at the club -- dog on dog, dog on person -- please make sure the parties involved are okay and get the proper medical attention/treatment needed. Our First Aid Kit is located inside the kitchen area to the right; First Responders info is inside the Open Training Log located on table outside office/kitchen area. Next fill out the Bite Incident Report while everyone s memory is fresh. The report can be found in the D.D.T.C. Info wall pocket, Open Training Log and office wall pockets. Get as much information as possible from all parties. Even if they say their dog is okay, or they re okay, fill one out. Once completed, make sure it goes to one of our Directors: Jane Frantz, Director of Obedience, janeddtc@gmail.com / 570.345.6406 or Gina Lutz, Director of Agility, lutzy24@comcast.net / 717.813.3452. If the office is open, place in their mailbox; if not slip it under the office door. Contact them by phone or email within 24 hours. Their info is also located on the D.D.T.C. website. One of the above Directors will take it from there and follow up with the parties involved. Did you also know that during an AKC trial, whether it be at our building or another facility, there is an AKC form: Dog Aggression Action by Event Committee that needs to be filed out? The Trial Chair(s) and/or Trial Secretary will have these forms. If there is an incident during an event, please communicate to the Event Chair(s) and/or Committee as soon as possible so the situation can be assessed and all the necessary information can be gathered in a timely manner. Remember it s every member s responsibility to fill out a report after an incident during class, open training, seminars and trials.

DDTC PRESENTS BRENDA ALOFF May 18 and 19 2019 Saturday May 18, 2019 8:30 5:30 Communicating Effectively with your Competition Dog Agility and Obedience Teams We all know that the majority of mistakes we make in trials are the Handlers fault either by lack of communication with our canine team member or proper training. We have asked Brenda to focus on the following: Desensitizing your dog to distractions, Developing your dog s self-control and addressing self-control issues, Recognizing and managing your dog s stress level and excitement in training and in the ring, Motivating different temperament types including: the shy and sensitive dog, the overzealous and anticipating dog, the pushy and reactive dog, the distracted dog or the one that has a poor work ethic. Sunday May 19 2019-8:00 3:00 Private lessons Brenda will work one on one with you and your dog to address specific issues. Each private is one hour. Must have attended an Aloff seminar in the past 18 months to request a private lesson About Brenda Aloff I am Brenda Aloff. I have been training dogs professionally for over 20 years. I specialize in problem dogs. I have 5 published books and a DVD. I also teach at clinics and workshops around the globe. I decided to close my boarding kennel and built the Heaven on Arf Training Center and started providing training and behavioral work exclusively. I love watching dogs and owners create a more understanding and closer relationship. After all these years, I still get a shiver of delight when I see a dog "get" the message I am trying to communicate, or when the dog has that "Ah ha!" moment. I get all warm and fuzzy when my human student has the thrill and increase in self confidence that results when using excellent mechanical skills combined with the right timing and technique. These are some of my favorite things! At home I currently have a Smooth Fox Terrier, Zasu and a Mini-Poodle rescue, Trixie. I should be thinking about a new puppy coming up, but after years of too many dogs (no matter how much I adored each and every rescue dog, it was still too darn many), I find myself not wanting to "share" this relationship. I have given myself permission to just have two! When I am not working dogs, I am riding horses. This has been a life-long passion of mine, and I cannot wait every day to spend time on ground work or mounted work with the horses. About 8 years ago I got very involved with Dressage and love it! I find myself more intensely horse crazy even than when I was a child (which was already bordering on OCD behavior). The most important thing I wish people knew about their companion animals is a knowledge of dog ethology. Ethology is the study of animal behavior, especially under natural conditions. Understanding how dogs would naturally operate opens new horizons in understanding your pet. Not having an understanding of the species or breed specific traits causes so much grief that is absolutely preventable. Most dogs lose their homes because the dog just did not behave in a way that the person was expecting. So people need to have a dose of reality BEFORE they even choose a dog. However, because I think the majority of dog purchases are an emotional decision, I think this trend will not soon change. Once people have the dog, I wish they could read the dog's body language better, because, again, problems that are entirely preventable could be curtailed or avoided altogether. When you have even a general idea of what the dog is communicating, you have lots of opportunities to give feedback to the dog about his behavior. Once these two topics are understood, training and living with your dog is an absolute easy, breezy time! And then the closeness of the relationship people were dreaming about when they got the dog can develop, and wa la! No more homeless dogs! Only happy, fulfilled dogs and people. Seminar will be held indoors in a climate controlled building with matted flooring. For address and directions go to www.ddtc.info or email Carolyn Dumaresq at ccdumaresq@gmail.com Cost for full day session is $175 per day for working teams and $75 for auditors Private lessons are $170 per hour Checks made out to DDTC Name email Saturday Working Auditor Private lesson Mail registration form to Carolyn Dumaresq 1370 Northview Lane Harrisburg Pa 17112
