The Lost Coast H O W L E R Editor: Barbara Stelz www.lostcoastkennelclub.org NOVEMBER 2007 LCKC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Officers: JILL OTTO President MICHELLE DOSTAL Vice President IRENE HETRICK Secretary PATTY MENDES Treasurer Members of the Board: CHRIS IRVIN NICK MENDES DEB ST. MYERS NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20th at the ADORNI CENTER 1011 Waterfront Drive Eureka President's Corner... LCKC has held several ring practices in the last month; however, they will be winding down more as we get more winter weather. Jack Sivak will be speaking about BARF (Bones And Raw Food) at our November meeting. Please plan to join us for information on feeding your dogs (and cats). Remember that the annual holiday party is fast approaching. It will be held 5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 2007, at Chris Irvin's home. See the club meeting minutes for additional details. Hope to see you at the upcoming meeting. If you are traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, please be safe. Jill Otto Board Mtg. - 6:30 p.m. Regular Mtg./ BARF Presentation at 7:00 Join us!!! All Welcome.

-2- BRAGS AND WAGS... At the Sir Francis Drake Kennel Club Agility Trial held 9/15-16, Beverly Morgan-Lewis' "Puck" finished his Open Agility and Open FAST titles, putting him now in Ex A in all three classes. Beverly is pleased because now she only has to memorize one set of courses! Puck celebrated his 2nd birthday on 10/6. Congratulations to Beverly, and congratulations and a belated Happy Birthday to Puck! Above: Puck demonstrating his winning style. Irene Hetrick's Manchester, "Dora", went BOS from the classes at the Two Cities show on Oct. 14, turning her one point win into a 3-point major! Congratulations to Irene and Dora on a super nice win! Above: Dora looking a -DORA-ble

-3- More Brags and Wags... Irene Hetrick's "Jamaica" went Best Puppy in Match at the Shasta KC Match in Red Bluff. Irene reports that Shasta KC put on a wonderful match with all of the members making something in a crock pot and providing a free lunch. They also had a very nice raffle. Total entry was over 60 dogs. Above: Jamaica being stacked by her breeder. Below: Jamaica relaxing with her ball. Congratulations to Irene and Jamaica!

-4- LCKC HOLIDAY GATHERING - As in past years, there will be no formal club meeting (or newsletter) in December. Instead, everyone is invited to gather once again at the home of Chris Irvin to share in a potluck celebration of the season. Chris will be cooking a turkey, and we are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. There will also be games and prizes! When: Sunday, December 9, at 5:00 p.m. Where: 3570 Albee Street, Eureka In keeping with the tradition of the season of giving, we will have a gift exchange. If you would like to participate, bring a wrapped gift with a value of not more than $15. And speaking of gifts... If you should receive duplicate or unwanted holiday gifts, Irene suggests that they would be welcome donations to our club raffle. The raffle is our big fundraiser to help us stay in the black. Health Tip: HEIMLICH for Dogs (This forces air out of the lungs which, in turn, pushes the object out of the throat.) For Small Dog - Place a cat or small dog on its side. Support the spine with one hand and with the other hand; grasp the abdomen just below the ribcage. Gently press in and up with the hand positioned below the ribcage. Repeat until the objects come out or until the animal is transported to the vet. Note...Be careful not to use too much force because this could cause internal damage. For Large Dogs - Place both hands below the ribs of large dogs. Press in and up, being careful not to use too much force. Repeat until the object comes out or until you have transported the animal to the vet. Important...Any animal that has choked should be checked by a vet as the object may have caused some damage to the airway, which could cause it to swell. Internal damage can also occur with the use of the Heimlich. When the object is out, check the animal's ABC's (airway, breathing, circulation). Common causes of airway obstructions are objects such as toys or bones, swelling of the throat due to stings or infection, throat swelling due to allergic reactions in small dogs (10 to 25 lbs), and throat spasm in cats due to an allergic reaction to the inhalation or ingestion if an irritant.
