Animal Protection League of Okaloosa County A non-profit organization for spaying & neutering founded in 1981 Newsletter Volume 36 Issue 2 October 2018 Letter from the President Miracles do happen in as much as I will send out a second newsletter this year. We are still averaging 100 spay or neuter surgeries per month. At this point we have completed over 1000 of them. Of course, that could not have been accomplished without the two clinics who work with us tirelessly. Thank you very much Emerald Coast Animal Hospital and Crossroads Animal Clinic. You just do not know how much we appreciate you and your staff. Our other thank you goes to all the friends, supporters and members who donate to us so generously. Whenever we think that we are broke, some kind people come through with big and small donations. You are all greatly appreciated. This must be the year of the kittens. At one point we were fostering 30 kittens and 5 adults. Thanks to all the foster parents who are doing a great service to the little creatures, who came mostly from feral mothers. Several were adopted out of the foster homes and some went to Petland in our new three layer cage (see photo). It should help to adopt even more of our kittens and cats. We are still planning our annual get-together at my house, but currently I can hardly walk on a very bad leg or hip, so I have to see, when I might have surgery or whatever they want to do. We will keep you posted. ~ Almut

Special Spay or Neuter, Vaccination & Microchip Events The APL, in conjunction with Crossroads Animal Clinic and Emerald Coast Animal Hospital, hosted five special low cost feline sterilization, vaccination and microchip events from February through July. The first event was sponsored by a generous $1,000 grant from A Guardian Angel Foundation. The events were announced on social media and all reservations were full in less than 24- hours which is indicative of the need for more affordable spay/neuter services in our area. A total of 179 cats and kittens (mostly adult cats from the same homes) were vetted at a cost of $45/$50 to the owner with donations and the grant covering the remaining cost. We plan to schedule three more events in October and November to get ahead of kitten season 2019. Please consider making a lifesaving investment in the APL to help support our mission. APL Membership ~ We are sad to announce that we lost one of our charter and lifelong APL Members this year. Odette Briggs will be truly missed. She volunteered at all our arts and craft sales, created items and helped with donations. She was a great animal lover and always had a dog in her house. Membership is open to those who support our mission and goals. Please call 850.862-8030 to join. Dues are: Annual - $15 Individuals or $25 Families $150 Individual Life Membership Welcome New Members Life Members: Christy Walker and Rita Bruner Individual Member: Total Membership: 180 including 149 Life Members

The APL is honored and grateful to have received a $5,000 spay/neuter grant from the Petco Foundation in March 2018. This generous lifesaving funding, in addition to public donations, resulted in 123 Okaloosa County cats being vetted. The lives of countless kittens were saved along with forever changing the lives of the cats. Thank you so much to the Petco Foundation and our community for helping the APL meet our mission goals. Please visit the Petco Foundation web site at https://www.petcofoundation.org The BISSELL Pet Foundation recognized our lifesaving work in April 2018 by investing $3,571.75 towards the Okaloosa Community Cat Project. We are very grateful for this funding that will allow the APL to meet our mission goals in 2018 and beyond. The lives of countless kittens will be saved in our area because of this generous spay and neuter grant. Please visit the BISSELL Pet Foundation web site at https://www.bissellpetfoundation.org. 1st Annual Poker Run The 1st Annual Poker Run was held on Jun 9th in conjunction with Save Our Cats and Kittens (SOCKS). We hoped for a better turnout but learned a lot and received $500 in donations. Thanks to Kecia and Jimmy for organizing the event; the Schuenemann family for donating supplies and everyone who came out to help support the APL. We are grateful to everyone who supports the APL mission. THANKS to all who have donated. Any amount, big or small, is very much appreciated! Help Save the Life of an Unwanted Dog or Cat The APL firmly believes that spay and neuter is the key to reducing the euthanasia of companion animals. Thousands of cats and dogs are put down by our local animal control contractor each year. We work to stop this tragedy with proactive solutions to reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the APL to help meet our mission goals. Thank you!
