A FAMILY OUTING By Lilja Bauer Vienna was bathed in summer sunshine. Etienne, who came from an important foreign affairs family, had recently taken up a consular post in this most cultured and history filled city. He and his wife Charlotte and two sons were out taking coffee in one of the many famous coffee houses in the Gumpendorferstrasse. The boys were bored and they were trying to have their father consider the purchase of a dog. Etienne was not too keen on the prospect of having a dog in the family. He liked his freedom to move about whenever and wherever he liked. He thought a dog would hamper his liberty. Dogs were a problem to be avoided at all cost. This was his philosophy and he was going to stick to it. He liked the good things in life, food, drink and material comforts. Besides their elegant and large apartment close to all the best things would be spoilt by a dog. And who was going to walk it? Etienne always got things his way, after all, he was the boss of all that made up his world. His wife Charlotte who was from a more down to earth background was of a totally different disposition. She was likely to indulge the children and she thought it might be a good thing for them to have a dog especially since they were moving so frequently from post to post. It would give them a sense of belonging and something to love and care for. She had, on one of her trips around Vienna, seen a park where people brought their dogs for sale and she thought it might be a good day to take a look. After some persuasion Etienne with somewhat bad grace and much verbal misgiving gave in and they set off for the park which was a short walk away. There were many dogs to choose from. And Etienne, despite himself, started to take an interest in all the different breeds. They came upon a young Rottweiler and he took a fancy to this dog. He observed it from a distance and the longer he looked the more he started to feel that this could be the dog for them. His boys and Charlotte were also looking in the same direction and they too were very pleased with what they were looking at. They continued on with their inspection of all the dogs and finally they decided to go back to where the Rottweiler was still on sale. Charlotte and the boys looked expectantly at Etienne and finally he agreed that they should buy the dog. They were overjoyed and paid the owner of the King Charles Spaniel that was standing next to the Rottweiler - much to Etienne s consternation.

Thursday 19 February @ 2pm Tickets: Cowlicks Books, Colac, Cororooke Shop, or http://www.trybooking.com/gvln Martyn Wyndham-Read (UK) and Keith McKenry are avid collectors and promoters of Australian song and story and the people who contributed to the development of the Australian identity. Keith McKenry has produced a biography on the life, work and legacy of the late John Meredith, a man of immeasurable importance to the preservation of the musical and cultural traditions of Australia. Marty Wyndham-Read s passion for Australian song and verse grew from his time as a teenage jackaroo on a South Australian sheep station where he was captivated by songs he heard from station hands. He is recognised as one of the foremost interpreters of the works of Henry Lawson in musical and lyrical form. Martyn and Keith join forces to illustrate and tell the story of John Meredith and present the songs that contributed to the development of Australian Identity. Meredith s story is one of intrigue and permeated with paranoia. He and his mates were described as communists and comsymps and were under constant surveillance by ASIO and State Police Special Branches. Meredith s writings portrayed a man driven and dedicated to safeguarding Australia s folk heritage, a heritage which at the time few believed-and many denied-existed. There are in interesting parallels between Meredith and Australian writers / poets, Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson who variously were seen as anti-establishment as they presented in song and verse the unique characteristics of the land, Australia and its people. McKenry s book, More than a life: John Meredith and the Fight for Australian Tradition includes a CD of 30 iconic Australian songs and several of these will be performed along with the songs that so greatly impacted the young Martyn Wyndham-Read.
