NEWSLETTER MARCH 2019 ISSUE 9 OPERATIONAL UPDATES VAT notice From January 1st 2019, HMRC has mandated that PPDDC collects VAT against its services. The stark reality is that, if PPDDC does not pass the VAT through to its clients, the business will operate at a loss and will have to close. To mitigate the financial impact to valued clients, PPDDC has absorbed the VAT surcharge for the first quarter of 2019. But sadly, our services must attract VAT from 1st April. As some of our oldest clients know, our price had remained unchanged for several years, so this is not a decision I have made lightly, nor am I comfortable in having to do so, but unfortunately VAT cannot be avoided. It has been through your continued support as valued clients that has helped grow PPDDC, and we look forward to being able to continually provide the excellent level of service you have come to enjoy. Should you have any questions relating to this please do not hesitate to give me a call on 0781 845 7957 and I'll be happy to answer them for you. Staff Training We are always looking for ways to develop and enhance our skills as well as improve the service we offer, enriching the time your dogs spends with us. As part of this ongoing development we thought you might be interested in knowing about the training we have scheduled this year for the Pawprints team. Dog to Dog communication The Pawprints team continually study how dogs communicate with each other; developing our knowledge, skills and experience in observing how dogs interact together. Dogs talk to each other with a sophisticated and complex language. They have a wide vocabulary and its not limited merely to visual signals, but incorporates sound, scent and touch. Working with one of the UK s leading canine behaviour specialists Sarah Whitehead, we are studying some of the latest research into canine meetings and greetings, canine play, sex and conflict, and predicting and preventing conflict. Tellington TTouch workshop TTouch recognises the link between posture and behaviour. It is a respectful way or working with animals to help improve a variety of behavioural issues such as fear, anxiety, reactivity, pulling on the lead, hyperactivity (and many more) but also helps increase the bond between dog and owner/handler. TTouch uses body work, ground work exercises and specific equipment to help release tension and promote a feeling of calm and well being. This in turn helps dogs to develop self confidence and self control as well as enabling dogs to move beyond their instinctive and often fearful responses.

Play workshop Canine behaviourist and trainer Craig Ogilvie will be delivering an interactive play workshop to the pawprints team. Craig will provide guidance on how to create a reinforcing play system to help empower dogs without losing control, using the joy of play to fulfil your dogs natural desires, improve relationships, build confidence, create motivational focus and implement alternative forms of positive reinforcement. We will also look at how to avoid and overcome problems during play such as over arousal and other problematic behaviours. Scenting/Mantrailing workshop Mantrailing is a new dog sport that teaches both owner and dog search and rescue skills to hunt down a missing person. It s a low impact exercise, engaging dogs olfactory senses that gives them an intense mental workout. We are huge fans of scenting games; they help channel dogs energy and excitement into a creative exercise that works their brains and lowers arousal. Exercising your dog is so much more than just meeting their physical needs. 121 activities We will work to incorporate the lessons learnt from these workshops into our 121 sessions. All activities are carefully tailored to each individual dog, however if anyone not wishing their dog to participate in extracurricular activities, please let us know. DOGS A-Z Instead of our usual Naughty and Good Dog of the Month, we thought we d run a new feature on all the dogs, running from A-Z so that you can all get to know a little bit more about some of your dog s favourite friends. This issue A, B and C A Alfie spaniel - Alfie, a working cocker spaniel, has been coming to Pawprints for over two years. He has a gentle nature and can generally be found either cuddling up to staff or wrestling with Peppa the cockapoo! He also likes to run through our agility tunnel in the parkour field. If you howl at Alfie, he happily joins in with you.

Alfie palomino - Alfie is one of our happiest and most playful dogs at pawprints. He makes use of every second he's here by playing with every dog he can and they all absolutely love him. His favourite dogs are beagles and other spaniels because they never run out of energy, just like Alfie! Archer - Archer is a Beauceron. He is super well behaved and very angelic. He gets along really well with all the dogs in the group but his best buddy is definitely Mondo. Arthur - Arthur is a young golden retriever pup full of energy and play. He always manages to get as dirty as possible and within minutes has changed colour. He has several other youngsters to play with, Padstow (Labrador) and Archer ( Beauceron) so there is always plenty of chasing about, chewing sticks and digging holes to be done! Autumn - Autumn, our first Hungarian Vizsla at PawPrints, joined us as a 12 week old, wrinkly pup and has now been coming for over 2 years. A classic velcro dog, she s highly affectionate, intelligent and a bit of a goof, loving nothing more than a good zoomie with her favourite spaniel Mortimer! B Bella - Another of our Hungarian Vizslas, Bella is a social butterfly who enjoys time spent with any breed of dog! After an exciting day full of fun, games and zoomies Bella loves nothing more than to see her Grandma and Grandad waiting at the gate, ready to take her home and pamper her further!

Billie - Billie is a young cavapoo puppy and lacked in confidence when she first came in, keeping herself to herself and preferring the company of humans. Over a number of short visits she grew in confidence and is now an integral part of the group the days she is in. She particularly likes puppy play with Hattie and Milo her two best buddies. Bobby - Bobby is a calm cocker spaniel who easily makes friends everywhere he goes, and so fluctuates between the small, medium and floatie group depending on what he fancies each day. He likes to hang around the polytunnel at lunch time in the faintest hope that we might feed him someone else s lunch! When Bobby wants to play, he manages to get the whole group involved! Bodie - Bodie, the cockapoo came to us as a young puppy and has grown into a loveable rogue, getting into mischief wherever it can be found. He loves nothing more than zoomies with Duncan, Mabel and Gizmo and spending time balancing on upturned logs and diving into water buckets in the summer. Where there is a bit of dirt, Bodie will find it... Bonnie - Bonnie is a beautiful young beagle who was rescued by a lovely family. When she first arrived at Pawprints she struggled to bring her energy levels down in snooze rooms and would bark with frustration. She has done amazingly well with her arousal levels and we have even caught her snoozing on the sofa a few times! She is a great addition to our pawprints family as she is happy to play all day and is so friendly with all the dogs. Buddy - Buddy is an adorable, cuddly dachshund who used to suffer from separation anxiety, but now takes everything in his stride! He spends half his time stretched out under heat lamps, and the other half chasing his friends around the play area. Buddy is very popular, but his besties are Rocko, Lottie, Poppy and Olive.

Buster - Buster is a handsome, golden and white cocker spaniel who is full of life and a hit with the ladies! He relishes high energy play, puts his amazing spaniel nose to work during scent games and causes mischief with fellow cocker Lennon! has Button - Button, the Jack Russell cross, is the life of the party every Wednesday and has many friends including Frankie, Lottie and Jazzy. She hardly ever stops to rest as she just so much fun to fit into one day. When playtime is over at 4pm and the dogs are taken to their snooze rooms, Button enjoys making staff chase after her! C Cassius - Cassius (Cassie) is a beautiful husky who is one of our regular dogs and so has many friends in the big dog group but his favourite friend is Cooper a golden retriever who he loves wrestling with and they can often be seen snoozing together after a mornings play. Cooper - Cooper is a very handsome Golden Retriever. He s very big but a total softie who loves cuddles. He is always full of goofy smiles and greets everyone with his wiggles. He loves to play with his friends Cassius, Grace, Leo and Penelope. Cooper - B - Cooper is another handsome, charged up beagle. He arrived at Pawprints with similar frustration issues as Bonnie, but quickly improved. Thanks to his extremely playful nature, the other dogs drained him of his physical and mental energy, helping him relax (collapse!) in the snooze rooms. He has so many friends and enjoys cuddling up with this pal on the sofas.
