The American Dutch Shepherd Association is a not-for-profit organization. Our Mission is to promote and protect quality and versa lity in the purebred Dutch Shepherd, to educate members and others about the breed, to encourage the highest standards of ownership and breeding, and to strive to bring the breed s natural quali es to perfec on. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It s spring in North Carolina and that means one thing in a house full of longhairs, there is hair all over the place. The big ques on for me is will my girls be blowing their coats again in September? Of course the ADSA Na onal Specialty will be held September 24 and 25 in Allentown PA. If my girls are out of coat I think I will volunteer to help steward. For those members with short hair or rough hair dogs this shouldn t be an issue, so I hope to see you all in large numbers. The northern longhairs should s ll be in good coat so I hope to see all of them as well. The 2016 show will be an AKC FSS Open Show for Dutch Shepherds only. All entries must have an AKC registra on number (foreign numbers are not allowed). AKC Cer ficate of Merit points will be awarded to the winner (Best of Breed) and the Best of Opposite Sex. Again I hope to see lots of Dutch Shepherds and their owners. Thanks to all those involved making this specialty happen. Besides the specialty I keep seeing on Facebook that many more of the ADSA Dutchies are par cipa ng in a variety of different dog ac vi es from obedience, rally, agility, lure coursing, Barn hunt and protec on sport. It s really nice to see so many members working with their dogs, and this is also great publicity for the breed as well. To me it is especially important to have purebred dogs demonstrate their versa lity when they are so many brindled shepherd crosses out there working under the guise of being a Dutch Shepherd. Finally with summer almost upon us so please make sure that you take care of your dogs, if you don t treat for heart worm all year round is me to start again, think about trea ng your dogs for cks, ck borne diseases also affect dogs and if you live in the south watch out for snakes. Have a great summer and see y all in Allentown! Happy Birthday and Congratula ons to Mrs. C. J. Bakkes-Versloot! On April 3 she turned 100 years old! Mrs. Bakkes-Versloot has been a member of the NHC for 56 years serving on the breeding advisory commi ee and visi ng every long hair li er born in the Netherlands. She is most well known for the role she played in reviving the Dutch Shepherd Long Hair popula on, which was declared ex nct by the breed club in the 1930s. At that me, the only me long hairs appeared was when born to two short hairs through recessive genes. There will be more about Mrs. C.J. Bakkes-Versloot and the history of the Dutch Shepherd in future newsle ers.

PAGE 9 DUTCH SHEPHERD HERDING INSTINCT TEST / HERDING EVENT SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2016. Tester/Trainer: Carolyn Wilki, an all-breed herding trainer, has tested over 2,000 dogs of all breeds. She has trained dogs and handlers to over 150 herding tles. She competes with her own Border Collies and German Shepherd Dogs and has trialed on arena type courses, ISDS type courses, tending courses, on sheep and on ducks. Carolyn has been to Germany mul ple mes to watch dogs herding sheep and has seen German Shepherds and at least one Dutch Shepherd tend 600 sheep in the fields of Bavaria. Ins nct Test Descrip on Dogs will be given approximately 30 minutes to demonstrate their herding prowess. Some dogs (for example, especially if they are young pups) will benefit from less me. Dogs will be tested for fetching, driving, and tending abili es. The owner will be handling the dog along with Carolyn, and will have an opportunity to learn about beginner herding and livestock control. The basic goals of an ins nct test are to show your dog that the dog has the power to move livestock and that moving livestock is fun and to show us behaviors in your dog that would be useful for further herding training. In order to pass and receive a cer ficate, dogs must show at least 5 minutes of sustained interest in sheep, natural behaviors useful to some herding style, and some responsiveness to handling. Whether a dog has passed or not, each dog will receive a wri en evalua on. During the test, the dog may be outside the test pen, inside a test pen with sheep, or outside the pen with handler and sheep inside. The dog may be dragging a long line, not dragging a long line, dragging a four foot leash, not wearing anything, etc. depending on what the tester thinks the dog needs to perform his/her best. Dogs first are introduced to penned sheep 4 sheep or 40 sheep with the dog outside the pen. Many dogs can be tested and passed without actually entering the pen with sheep. If the dog requires addi onal s mula on by chasing stock without a barrier between, the dog (on or off leash, as appropriate) will be tested with livestock inside a 32, 40, 50, 100 square or round diameter pen or in a 50 x100 or 100 x 200 arena pen or in a 10 acre field marked with furrows. If a dog is too in midated by sheep, we will try to coax the herding ins nct behaviors using ducks instead. MORNING: HERDING INSTINCT TEST (NON-AKC TEST) OR TRAINING PERIOD Fee: $65 prepaid Start Time: 7:30 AM Herding Ins nct Test: In the ins nct test, as well as in the training periods, posi ve reinforcement training techniques are used. Dogs may be restrained with a dragging long line or kept behind fence barriers, as appropriate. Every dog tested receives a wri en evalua on. Puppies should be no younger than 6 months of age. No upper age limit. Dogs should have useful sight and hearing and be physically able to trot/move normally. Each handler and dog tested will be given approximately a half hour with tester/trainer Carolyn Wilki & sheep or ducks. Leash your dog! Dress your dog in all his/her normal collars, including at least a flat buckle collar. Have a mid-back or sled dog harness available for use if you can. No e-collars. Please pick up a er your dog. Feed & water dog as usual! Bring dog treats that have high value for your dog ówe might use them (or not) during the test or in the training period. Please wear/ bring weather/farm suitable clothes. Bring bug spray, sun block if appropriate. Handlers with dogs who are already in herding training should describe in wri ng what type of stock and set-up they would like to use (type, number of stock, size of arena, size of field) and briefly describe what their training objec ve will be during that half hour. End me: ~ 12:00 PM Followed by 10 Minute video of Sheep Tending in Germany. AFTERNOON HERDING TRAINING CLINIC: Fee $130 pre-paid; $20 lecture only Start Time: 12:30 or 1 PM (depending on morning entries) End Time: 4:00 pm (sooner, if fewer dogs) 1-2 PM: Introductory Lecture on Herding and Tending Fundamentals At least 2 opportuni es on livestock per dog. Maximum of 7 dogs. [Note: If the trainer feels dog and owner are skilled enough to work on their own during the introductory lecture, they will be given permission to do so.] Contact Carole Goetzelmann with ques ons, or to reserve your spot. mylaeken@hotmail.com
