Please review the important dates below so that you are familiar with the class schedule and any upcoming events. Please mark your calendars regarding the Obedience Trial on May 2nd and 3rd. It will be held in our building and the 4H building next door. The trial will begin at 8:00am and finish around 6:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. We will need volunteers to help clean the mats, equipment, and the building on Wednesday and Thursday (April 29th & 30th) prior to the trial. There will be a C match on Friday night, May 1st prior to the trial. This match is a practice session and requires pre-entry. This match will require workers along with final set up on Friday night. A total of (5) paw points will be awarded per hour of work completed for anything that needs to be done. There will be sign up sheets posted during the next session as reminders. We will also need ring stewards. We will appoint a Chief Ring Steward who will take the names of volunteers and work out a schedule. Trophy donations will need to be paid prior to the obedience trial as well and I will be taking those. Teamwork will help make this a successful obedience trial. Thank you in advance! Please note that membership dues were due on February 1, 2015. If you did not receive a dues notice either by mail or email, please notify Diane Townsend. Dues not paid by March 3rd, will be considered late and a reinstate vote will be necessary. Please note that the next open meeting will be held on March 4, 2015, starting at 7:00pm. Barn Hunt is coming to FWOTC! This is your chance to see what all the excitement is about! Does your dog chase after squirrels and birds? Does your dog hunt for moles and bunnies See if your dog has what it takes to find those rats! We are offering 2 week classes with space for up to 8 teams. (Four -2 week sessions will be offered). At no time during class will a pet rat be free to roam and beg treats from you. This sport is about the safety of the rats and the dogs. When you are competing you never see a rat they are always in a tube or in their secure location away from the competition. Introduction to the rats- We will have a cage with two active inquisitive PET rats A clear tube and competition tube. Each tube will have a rat for your dog to both smell and visualize. Various methods are available to get the dogs interested in sniffing, pawing, pushing or otherwise indicating the rat. In Barn Hunt it does not matter how your dog indicts the rat it is you, as the handler, to tell the judge that your dog has found a rat. Instinct- (for those dogs showing interest) we will move to instinct where a clean tube is added and your dog can learn to distinguish between the rat tube and other tubes. The second week we will introduce the litter tube and for those dogs ready to try to find hidden rats, set up a small instinct type course with tubes hidden under sheets. We will also have additional introduction and instinct available. Videos of the different levels of competition so you can see some of the courses and how different dogs work. Rules of competition will also be provided and explained. This sport is different from most sports as it allows bitches in season, deaf dogs, dogs with missing limbs, dogs with limited or partial vision and puppies as young as 6 months old to compete. We will have two stations to work rats and one station to view videos and discuss rules so everyone will have plenty of time to work. Each 2 week session is just $20.00. You may sign up more than one dog if you wish, however only 1 dog/person per session. If you have multiple dogs you need to sign up for multiple sessions. We will not have room in these classes for bitches in season (BIS) at this time. Classes will be Tuesday evenings 5:30 to 6:30. Bring leash, crate, and treats and/or tug toy to reward your dogs. Dogs must be under control at all times. A sturdy flat buckle collar without attachments (no tags) and a 6 leash is required. To sign up contact Nancy Yeoman (MeemNan@aol.com) or Dawn Taylor (sunrscorgi@gmail.com). Provide your name, name of dog, dog breed, age of dog and any performance work the dog has already been training in (agility, tracking, field work, luring, obedience scent articles, nose work, etc.) and if you have a preference of which weeks. If no preference we will fill classes from the first received If we have enough interest, we will offer additional classes in the spring/summer off site with actual straw courses available to further prepare you and your dog for entering Barn Hunt Trials.
