CKCOJ news Volume 10, Issue 8 Of fi cial Publication of the Capital Ken nel Club of Juneau June 2004 CLUB NEWS Welcome New and Renewing Members... Hallie McGee; Kim Hastings; Cheryl Hull and family; Michelle Casey; Clynda Case and family; Laura Glaiser; Catherine Gitkov; and, Lorraine Thomas and family. Thanks to Juli Lucky... for all the work you did as Treasurer and good luck in your new adventures! And Thanks to Our New Treasurer Thanks also to Cheri Nienhuis for volunteering to serve as club Treasurer! Puppy Class Starting Marty Messick and and Linda Shipman will teach a puppy kindergarten class beginning June 30, 7-8pm, Wednesday nights at the Riverbend School covered playground. Please pass the word along to any families you know with three to six month old puppies. Details for the class can be found at the club website. http: //www.ckcoj.org Agility Trial Premium Available The premium list for Juneau s agility trial is ready to go & is on the website at ckcoj. Dates for the trial are July 31 & August 1. Entries will be due by 5PM July 16. Look forward to seeing everyone! Agility Demo -- Dogs Needed! Chicory has graciously offered to organize the 4th of July agility demo at Sandy Beach again this year. Last year we had a bit of a disappointing turn out in dogs and handlers, but there was a good audience. This is great PR for the club and a good way for us to pull in new members. Very simple courses were set up (to make the dogs look good) and everything is run in the ball field, with the bulk of the crowd on the other side of the fence (and baby gates lining the rest of the field), so there are few concerns about the dogs taking off. It would be a great opportunity to practice with your dogs in a distracting environment & good practice for the trial. If you are willing/able to participate, contact Chicory at nuggett@gci.net. Rally-O Thanks and congrats Congratulation to those who participated in the Rally Obedience trial last weekend, and a thank-you to the many volunteers and competitors who made the trial a great success! page 4 Road Report: Great Dog Park in Canmore, Alberta Submitted by Heather Stockard Kira, Minnow, Chris, and I are currently in Banff National Park, Alberta - about an hour and a half from Calgary. If you ever get to this area, I have another great dog park to recommend. I stumbled across it by accident, but Kira and Minnow give it a four paw rating. It s called Quarry Lakes leash-free dog area and it s on the road up to the Nordic Training Centre in Canmore, Alberta - just outside the Banff National Park boundaries. Although it is fenced, the area is so large that you don t even notice the fences. There are two huge grassy areas, some woods between them, the dog puddle swimming hole, and a circular trail that connects all the areas. Plenty of poop bags are available along with animal waste only dumpsters to dispose of them. The area is large enough that folks can be training dogs in one area without being distracted by dogs romping in the other areas. It was great to see so many of you while we were in Juneau. Thanks for all your hospitality and to the wonderful team of volunteers that put on the rally trial. Great job everyone! Heather Stockard Club News -- continued from page 1 accessible to members, the Board has decided to house the collection at our heated storage unit in the Lemon Creek area. Items will be checked out on the honor system. There will be a clipboard to sign out items you borrow and sign in when you've returned them. It's not quite set up yet, but should be within the next week or two. A listing of the library holdings is on the club website in the Members Only section. Annual Meeting -- Advance Planning Although it's still a few months away, we've started planning for the Annual Club Meeting, Potluck and Awards. The Board has tentatively set a date -- Saturday, October 30. Pending confirmation of availability, the location will be the same as last year's, The Lewiston Shows Submitted by Gaile Haynes Was the trip to Lewiston worth a possible one point a day for four days, with the only chance of doing better taking first in group? Well, considering that Copper took three of the four and now needs only six points and a major, yes. It was a good show site for the pleasant days we enjoyed, but a fairground with unheated buildings might have been uncomfortable in bad (i.e. Juneau-rainy) weather. We flew into Seattle and then had a five-hour wait to catch a little tiny Horizon plane to Lewiston. I made good use of the wait time, as I was helping select a dog to be trained as a service dog. I had recommended a Doberman as the right breed and Marti Yoing of Doberman Rescue in Olympia brought a young dog whom she thought would meet our needs. From Marti s description, I did too, and she brought him to the airport and took us to a nearby area where I could interview him. He passed with flying colors, so she delivered him to me at the airport on my way home and Midas is now halfway through my basic class, and doing well. (Note: service dogs travel free on Alaska Air whther or not they are actually working. Cheers to Alaska Air and hearty boos to people who take advantage of this. Instead of renting a car, I took advantage of the motel s shuttle service to get to and from the show grounds. That in turn resulted in my eating most of my meals either at the motel or the show, since there was nothing but fast food places in walking distance. (Warning, warning, warning: Do NOT eat seafood out of sight of the sea!) Nevertheless, the lack of a car saved looking (and paying) for parking at the show, and door-to-door service made getting my gear around easy. What made the show suspenseful was that the handler of Copper s competition kept threatening to pull his dog as he knew it didn t have a chance. I therefore spent a lot of time making nice to him to prevent this -- biting my tongue at his saying that he was only keeping the dog in to be nice to the little old lady who had come clear down from Alaska -- and was almost relieved to have him take the point the final day. On the whole the show placings seemed more political than I have noticed so far, althougb at one time I rode to the show in the van with three of the judges, and their conversation about the dogs was all based on quality, not who was on the other end of the leash. Would I go back? Only if there was something I knew would be worth going for. õ
