Presidents Report Welcome to our Winter newsletter -hope everyone is keeping warm in our horrible Melbourne weather. Featured in this letter are the results and photos from our recent championship show which was held on the Queens birthday long weekend. It was a very successful double show event which was pulled together very quickly after an issue which we were able to resolve with our contracted judge. It was a very stressful time for our committee but we were very well supported by the members which we thank everyone for their support and encouragement. Returning to the two show format was very well received by many members. The financial support from members and local business helped to make this years shows very cost effective. Our major sponsors were very generous. Many people helped behind the scenes before and on the day of the show and we are very grateful to all. We trialled a new photographer this year ---Ingrid Matschke from SA and we hope you were all as impressed as we were with her photography. It was great to see the ever cheerful Ron Smith back this year as our ring steward-- many thanks to he and Debbie making the trip to Melbourne. To continue to produce events like our championship show we need a committee. At this stage there are no nominations. The current committee are very tired and need help- please consider joining. Our next event after our Annual General Meeting in August is the Royal Melbourne Show. We plan to hold a breed stall again this year so if you are able to help for an hour or so please let us know. It is very rewarding speaking to the general public about our wonderful breed and improving their knowledge. Hope to see lots of you at the annual general meeting as we need your support and input on running your club. Joy McInnes President 3

Secretary's Report Another Championship show has come and gone. Congratulations to all of the winners. After some difficulties in the planning stages, I believe the weekend was an outstanding success. Thank you to committee and members for your support before and during the Shows. I would especially like to thank the team of people who assisted with setting and packing up and catering over the weekend. Your contribution helped ensure the smooth running of the shows. This year saw us using online entries for the first time. Show Manager were outstanding and their work helped to ensure the smooth running of the show. I would recommend continuing with them in the future. Again we were generously sponsored by Royal Canin. Product was well received by the winners. At close of nominations for Office Bearers and Committee, there were no nominations received. With the AGM and August SGM only a matter of weeks away, please consider whether you have a little time to spare for your club. Currently, we are a effectively a committee of four working hard to ensure that the club continues to provide its members with all of the activities and services that have been provided in the past. This cannot continue. As things stand, next year we can only guarantee the Open and Championship Shows and four newsletters. All other activities such as Member's Competitions, Health Clinics etc will be depend on the support of members. We will be taking nominations from the floor at the meeting. So, again, please consider if you can spare one evening a month and a little extra time between meetings. Storage of the clubs large amount of equipment is an ongoing problem. It is always better if we can have it in one secure place with easy access. We are very grateful to Sue Smith for allowing us to use her shed. However, we are finding that this is not the best possible solution to the problem. Committee has a possible solution. Please consider carefully the motion that you will find in the Agenda for the SGM Trish Fernleigh Secretary 4

Fitness and Fletcher (completing an Endurance Test with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) by Penny Windlow As time passes, I continue to see evidence that my Fletcher can hold his own against the larger (working) breeds in the performance ring. I also take great pride in demonstrating that our wonderful Cavs can be more than just lap warmers. Thus, the desire to complete an Endurance Test was born! So just what is an Endurance Test? Essentially, it is a test of a dog s fitness and stamina. Together with its handler (who may run the distance or ride a bike), the dog is required to complete a 20km course at a speed of 10kph. The course is run over three legs of 8km, 6km, and 6km, with short breaks in between. The dog must also pass four vet checks (held before and after the Test, and during the breaks), and two willingness tests (basic obedience tests, to ensure that the dog is willing to work for its handler) before and after the Test. Fit dog? Fit handler? An excuse to buy myself a bike? Sounded good to me! I started training Fletcher in mid-march 2014 once he was familiar with a bike and knew to stay beside it (he learned very early on that running in front of a bike was not such a good idea!). After locating a training program online, I got stuck into the training in earnest. On average, Fletcher and I completed between 2 and 4 training sessions each week for 14 weeks, working on both distance and speed. I chose to enter the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria s Endurance Test, which was held on 21 June 2014 at Cherry Lake Reserve in Altona. It was a decidedly brisk morning, but the rain gods were kind to us. There were 19 entrants, ranging in size and shape from eight elegant German Shepherds to a stocky little Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Cherry Lake was a sensational backdrop as we completed several laps of the designated course; fortunately no dogs attempted to take off after the large flock of pelicans that were enjoying their leisurely Saturday morning swim! Fletcher and I had a very smooth ride. He trotted smartly along beside me, happy as can be, and bounced around like a beach ball during the breaks he made it obvious that he had plenty left in the tank! At the end of the Test, 17 dogs earned their titles (the remaining two failed one of the vet checks, and were eliminated), so the mood was buoyant. Photos were taken while pass cards and title ribbons were awarded. We all knew we d achieved something really special. Over the course of 14 weeks, I watched my dog build up his fitness and stamina in what was truly a beautiful transformation. By the tenth week, Fletcher was managing longer distances very comfortably at speeds of about 13kph. It was also a lovely opportunity to spend some quality time with my little superstar, and I feel more closely bonded with him as a result. 5

Completing an Endurance Test is a thoroughly satisfying experience, and one I highly recommend undertaking! All you need is a dog, and some determination! 1. The Big Day happy to be here 2. Pre-Test vet check. 3. Fletcher and I on the move! 4. Liaising with my Pit Manager. 5. Presenting Daventri Midnight Dash CD RA ET! NEW BREEDER'S PAGE ON WEBSITE As voted on at the April Special General meeting and due to the poor uptake of the Puppy Referral Service by members, puppy referrals have been discontinued. In its place we are establishing a Breeder's page on our website where members can advertise their kennel in a similar way that we use Dogzonoline. Members will be charged an annual fee of $20 to be included. Kennel names will be regularly rotated to ensure that the same breeder does not appear on top of the list all of the time. Below is an example of an entry. YOUR KENNEL NAME Location: Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne Phone: 1234 5678 Email: yourkennelname@gmail.com.au Website: yourkennelname.com Those who have puppies will be highlighted in red and will be moved to the top of the list as soon as Stephen receives an email from me Informing him of same. The blurb on the page will say that highlighted breeders MAY have puppies. Once all, puppies have been sold, you should notify me so you can be moved down the list. Payment can be made directly into the club's bank account, details of which can be found on the website. Once payment has been made, send the reference number to me at secretary@cavalierclubvictoria.com along with your advertisement and I will forward to Stephen for inclusion. 2016 Judge Nomination Ted Rogerson (Rabymar) UK Nominated Joy McInnes Ted has notified me that he is unavailable to judge our June 2016 show due to another commitment. This leaves us with no nominated judge. We will take nominations from the floor at the meeting. 7

General Business 1. Payment of Airfares for Champ Show Judges 2. Motion 1. that we reduce the property classes at our Championship Shows from the current ten to a more manageable number. Option one: Colour classes only Option two: Colour classes, Breeder's Team, Victorian Owner Bred and Best Interstate exhibit. Moved Joy Mcinnes Seconded Trish Fernleigh Rationale: The property classes usually take more than an hour to judge and any delay can extend the break for up to a further thirty minutes as was the case this year. Over recent years some classes have not been represented. 3. Motion 2. that funds be drawn down from the term deposit to pay for one year s storage at Storage King, Sladen Street Cranbourne. Further funds will be obtained by fund raising. This fund raising will be ongoing. Moved Jan Kelly Seconded Trish Fernleigh Rationale: A Committee member, Sue Smith, kindly allowed the Club to use a shed on her property, and for this we are very appreciative. However, this has been difficult to utilize as conflicting schedules have made it a problem to coordinate access. As a result, some club property is spread amongst various Committee members homes. This is a huge impost and has led, in the past, to items being lost. One year of storage from December 2012 to December 2013 at Storage King Cranbourne was paid for by Jan Kelly. This was very satisfactory with Committee members being able to remove Club property from their homes. In December 2013 the Committee decided that the Club could not afford to continue with this facility. Storage King offers 24 hour access, is a secure, climate controlled environment and is about a 15 minute drive from KCC Park.. Cost is $90.00 per month. Paying for twelve months will be $990. Paying upfront gives one month free. Fundraising will take the form of sausage sizzles at Bunnings or Masters and will be dependent on member support Perpetual Trophy storage has been investigated at Bulla but this will be one shelf in a cabinet at a cost of approx $350 One shelf will not be adequate for the existing Trophies therefore cost would increase exponentially. Further Bulla is one hour plus from KCC Park. Committee members also had concerns re security. The possibility of placing the trophies in the museum was investigated. after a generous offer from a member. Unfortunately, once in the museum trophies cannot be removed. Trophies aside the Club has a large amount of equipment that needs to be stored. 9

4. Motion 3(a) that the Association return to two Championship Shows on the Queen's Birthday weekend in June, one on Sunday and one on Monday. Moved Jan Kelly Seconded Joy McInnes Motion 3(b) that committee can at their discretion review the viability of holding either one or two shows depending circumstances at the time and the best interests of the Association Moved Jan Kelly Seconded Joy McInnes Rationale: This year due to unforeseen circumstances the Club held two Championship Shows one Sunday and one Monday. The return to two shows was well received by a large number of exhibitors. The work involved in holding two Shows was no different to holding one. Great care was taken that the costs stayed within budget. The entry numbers for shows have been consistently falling over the years with people rationalizing their expenditure. If the numbers reach such a point the Club may lose the right to use Sunday and Monday and would only be able to hold one show on one day. Currently cluster shows are very well attended, thus, offering two shows allows exhibitors travelling from country Victoria and interstate the opportunity to exhibit at five shows over the weekend, two on Friday (West Gippsland) one on Saturday (Toy Dog Club) and two Specialty Cavalier Shows, if they so wish, making a trip to Melbourne highly attractive. This motion recommends that holding two shows may be looked at on a year to year basis if the Committee so chooses. 5. Motion 4. That proposed By Law 12 be amended to read as follows (the amendment to the by-law is in bold) 12. The Association shall hold a single Championship Show over two days on the Queen s Birthday Weekend. This may only be changed under extenuating circumstances which will result in a substantial loss to the Club with insufficient time for the committee to call an SGM of members. Moved Michelle Creek 6. Motion 5. Only dogs and bitches which are entire are eligible for Property Classes. Moved: Michelle Creek 7. New boxes for perpetual trophies 8. Life membership COMMITTEE 2014/15 We have no nominations for committee next year. Please consider giving some time to your club. Some are willing to continue in their current positions. However, we can only continue to offer services at the current level with a full committee. We can only guarantee the Open Show, Championship Show and four newsletters next year at the moment. 10

Critiques Coming to Australia after a long flight and nearly no sleep my judging started early in the morning. I was very impressed to see so many nice dogs, perfectly groomed and excellently handled by their exhibitors. Great ring. Discipline of ring stewards, exhibitors and dogs that made the judging go smoothly. My first two classes were baby boys and girls. Many promising pups who already were trained like show-stars. I saw a lot of dogs with super toplines and lovely arched neck what gives a great profile-movement when using themselves. A lot of great back ends, croups and balance in body. In the parti-colour you have to watch the tail-carriage as there were too many with gay tails. The opposite I have to say in the whole-colours. Excellent, there was nearly no wholecolour with a gay or (round) tail in the ring. Good job you did over there. Tails were correctly set and carried in the length of the back. I have to say a good average in these dogs will please allrounders and breed specialists and that is hardly to achieve.
