We want our names on there because it shows our support for the new shelter. The pavers will line the walkways between the buildings at AnimalHaven, the new pet shelter serving Whitman County. He feels AnimalHaven is an important accomplishment for the community. Mitch was mayor of Pullman from 1996 to 2003, and oversaw the transition of the pet shelter from one that regularly euthanized its residents to the no-kill shelter that exists today, operated by the Whitman County Humane Society. The pavers are a great way for the community to support this new pet shelter. In the years to come, you ll be able to see your name and your neighbors names. With all those names together, it will be a testament to the magnitude of the support for AnimalHaven. Please purchase your paver today and join the walkway to a better pet shelter! 3 New Owner is Moonstruck by Luna By Reilly Smith Beer Garden! All proceeds will go to the campaign to build AnimalHaven. Please visit us at the beer garden and drink a frosty beer for the homeless pets of Whitman County! Meet Aquitaine WCHS will run the beer garden at Concrete Days during the Colgate Challenge July 11, 3 o clock to 6 o clock Schmuck Park, Colfax Bonjour, mon ami, my name is Aquitaine. I m a 2- to 3-year-old brown tabby lady who was abandoned at the shelter with a mangled hind leg. It was an old injury and not really painful anymore, but it had left my leg all useless and floppy, so the vet took it right off. Now I m a tripod, as they say, and it sure is easier to get around without all that dead weight back there. I ve been in a foster home where I am proving myself the quintessential lap-cat. I just like being near (and/or on) people, giving selflessly of my body heat and quiet friendship in exchange for an occasional head scratch. My foster family has kids and cats, both of which I get along with. My feelings regarding dogs remain unexplored due to lack of exposure. I wouldn t like to be around any roughhousing sorts, what with my three-legged status putting me at a physical disadvantage. I do enjoy the comforts of home, so I think I d be very happy spending the rest of my life as an indoor cat. All I need now, of course, is a home of my own! When she first laid eyes on her, Lorna Hanrahan recalls, she thought Luna was absolutely beautiful. Formerly known as Ghost, Luna is a unique mix of American Staffordshire Terrier and Shar-pei. She is a sweet, calm and obedient dog. Her first home was with a college student who had to surrender her due to living complications. The shelter staff fell in love with her, as she follows any command with utter ease and delights everyone she comes into contact with. Lorna Hanrahan felt it was time to adopt a dog as a companion and a friend. Having first met a black lab, she felt the dog was too big and strong for her to handle. Lorna then met Luna. While Pit bulls are not generally considered service dogs, Luna has been an exception to all the rules. Within the first few weeks, Lorna noticed a change in her lifestyle. Having mostly remained inside her apartment, Luna has given her a reason to leave the house and become more active. With Luna by her side, Lorna has found new joy in her life. All members of the Whitman County Humane Society are entitled to vote on board member appointments. Please call WCHS executive administrator Connie Belcher at 509-332-2246 with your comments. Michelle L. Shelley Calissendorff was born and raised in Whitman County. She is a fifth generation Palouse resident who has a keen understanding of the area. A lifelong animal advocate, she worked for many years at the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) of Lynnwood, WA. Among her responsibilities as office manager of PAWS, was the coordination of volunteers and the running of outreach booths. She also organized an event to help educate school teachers, animal control officers, and humane officers about the links between animal and child cruelty. She has provided a permanent or foster home to many animals. She believes WCHS could use community education to expand its volunteer and membership base and help create excitement about the organization s mission. Thank you Troop 2272! Girl Scout Troop 2272 donated $50 to WCHS at the shelter on June 10, 2009. Thanks girls! Donald Heroff has been a pet owner all his life and understands how important animals are in our lives. He is active in community-oriented organizations, including volunteering at the Montesorri School of Pullman, and serving on the committee for the City of Pullman 4th of July Celebration. Donald has two sons and two dogs, all of whom bring him joy, peace and friendship. His household also includes three cats and a guinea pig. He believes strongly in spay/neutering to control the pet populations, and that finishing and developing AnimalHaven is a top priority so that WCHS can best serve Whitman County. Amy Puckett has spent her life around animals and wants to give back to the community. She volunteered at a horse ranch in upstate New York throughout high school and college, and has raised and trained Australian Shepherds. All of her past and present animals are rescues. She enjoys all that a happy, loving animal can teach and give. As an active member of the Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation Board, Amy has served on the Sponsorship, Annual Gala, and Golf Tournament Committees. Amy hopes to use her knowledge of fund-raising (and friendraising ) to help the WCHS. She is well informed of the many programs that WCHS offers, including the SNAP program and the Hope Fund, and is thrilled that a dog park is part of the AnimalHaven plans. Amy wants to help make the WCHS shelter a safe, loving, and nurturing place and is very willing to learn and work hard to gain the skills necessary to make a significant contribution.
