1] INTRODUCTION 2007 In 2007 I received the permission from the European Studbook Foundation (ESF) to become the studbook keeper from Terrapene carolina bauri and start-up a new studbook. Some years before there is done a first try to start-up a Terrapene carolina bauri studbook (by B. Schuijt) but this was not successful. Because only 1 of this animals is living(as far as I know) I start all over again. Main goal is to build-up together with the studbook members a healthy captive population from Terrapene carolina bauri in Europe. Photo: Daniel Parker 2] STATUS IN NATURE The Florida box turtle, Terrapene carolina bauri is still found throughout the Florida Peninsula region. From extreme South-eastern Georgia to the Florida Keys.

Aldo numbers are declining, exact numbers or the status in nature of Terrapene carolina bauri is not known, knowing this is very important for the conservation efforts in America. Lacking this knowledge means less conservation. Habitat is become isolated and shrinking with the increase of people living in Florida. Survival may depend only of protecting (public) lands in the central parts of the state. In the past here were known large populations, but they disappeared Government of Florida forbid commercial collecting and limits possession to two individuals per person without a permit. Internationally Terrapene carolina bauri is protected by CITES and is listed in Apendix 2 The future for Terrapene carolina bauri in nature is unsure. Increasing numbers of people living in Florida with the result more habitat loss is to be expected. There for there must be done more to the protection from habitats and for the animal self. The first step in conservation isto find out more about the Terrapene carolina bauri by doing research. Maybe research can provide the status and lead to more conservation efforts for this beautiful and vulnerable box turtle in Florida. Photo: Daniel Parker

3] STUDBOOK POPULATIONS 2007 December 31, 2007 the total studbook population exist of 8.16.24 (48) animals. December 31, 2007 the total living population exist of 8.16.24 (48) animals. 4] LOCATIONS WITH TERRAPENE CAROLINA BAURI There are 7 locations with Terrapene carolina bauri 3 locations in the Netherlands 2 locations in Germany 1 location in Spain 1 location in Engeland 5] BIRTHS In 2007 there was from 2 locations births reported. one location with 2 hatchlings one location with 4 hatchlings Photo: Daniel Parker

6] DEATHS No deaths are reported in 2007 7] TRANSFERS Because of the start in 2007 from the studbook Terrapene carolina bauri no transfers reported 8] GOALS STUDBOOK TERRAPENE CAROLINA BAURI 2008 a] Getting a better overview from this species in captive in Europe b] Sort out how many bloodlines there are in the studbook population c] To try as quick as possible ask the Advisory Committee Genetics a advise about the studbook. d] Contacting more people to join the studbook Photo : Daniel Parker
