S A L U K I C L U B O f A M E R I C A Page 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Planning for June 2018 is well under way. Our Show Chair, Monica Stoner, is working with her committees to maintain or exceed the high standards that we have come to expect for our National Specialty. Our conformation judge will be Frank Farrar and our sweepstakes judge will be Joseph Minor. Please remember that the National will move back to its customary date the week after the Mississippi Valley and Missouri Rhineland Kennel Club shows. It will take place on June 5 to 9, 2018. The Board has received a proposal to hold the 2019 National in June at Purina Farms. The proposal is from Patsy Hoy. Helen Graham will be our conformation judge. As always, if you have thoughts, ideas or questions, the Board welcomes comments to secretary@salukiclub.org. I hope everyone had a great Summer. Best wishes for the coming Holidays. Gary M. Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 7 Delegate Report September 2017 Going into this meeting, two major concerns were changes to the reinstatement process for dogs disqualified as aggressive, plus the elimination of the Limited Registration. The first item was removed from voting for further discussion. The second item, which had been brought up in an AKC board meeting, was withdrawn as a point of discussion. FROM THE COMMITTEES: Companion Events: All event entries are up except for Agility. 13 Obedience, 17 Rally and 6 Agility trials were cancelled due to the Canine Influenza Virus during June August. Obedience Classic/Junior Obedience/Rally Classic will be held in Orlando December 16-17, 2017. Agility Invitational/Junior Agility Competition will be held in Orlando December 15-17, 2017. The National Agility Championship will be held at the RenoSpark Livestock Events Center in Reno, NV on March 23-25, 2018. After entries close a decision will be made on whether to add March 22 to the Championship. Rally National Championship and National Obedience Championship will be held at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, MO on March 23-25, 2018. The RNC will be held on Friday and the NOC will be held on Saturday and Sunday. More information will be on the AKC website in November for volunteers and vendors. Scent Work Program. AKC Scent Work will launch on October 1. Staff shared an excellent video illustrating some of the requirements, which will be made available. Trick Dog Program: Launched May 1 and has been very successful. Achiever Dog. The Achiever Dog pilot program will launch on December 1. A dog that earns a ribbon in three different sports will receive an Achiever Dog certificate. It is not a titling program. The purpose of the program is to encourage owners to try several different sports in the hope that they will find the one that works for them. At the end of one year, all owners who have received the Achiever Dog certificate will be surveyed to determine the program s impact on their behavior. The future of the program will depend on the results and insight gained from the survey. Group Exercise Changes Committee discussed the changes and plans to send a note to the AKC Board supporting the recommended changes. Rally: New signs launch November 1, 2017. You Tube videos illustrate how to perform these signs. Breeder of Merit by level based on titles earned by dogs bred. The BOM program currently requires a breeder to have bred four titled dogs, certify that their breeding stock has met the health testing as recommended by the breed s Parent Club and the breeder must be a member of an AKC club. There will be four additional levels bronze, silver, gold and platinum. For each level, there is a minimum number of total titled dogs bred and a minimum of prefix titled dogs bred. The purpose of the program is to (l) provide an incentive for breeders to encourage their puppy buyers to become involved in AKC sports since accomplishments will reflect back on their breeding program, and (2) provide recognition to those longterm successful breeders that have produced numerous titled dogs. The program will launch October 1. The Achiever Dog pilot program will launch on December 1. A dog earning a ribbon in three different sports will receive an Achiever Dog certificate. It is not a titling program. The purpose of the program is to encourage owners to try several different sports in the hope that they will find the one that works for them. At the end of one year, all owners who have received the Achiever Dog certificate will be surveyed to determine the programs impact on their behavior. The future of the program will depend on the results and insight gained from the survey. 2. A POA certificate will be issued to dogs that earn a designated number of points from the BPUP or regular Puppy classes.it is not a titling program. The purpose of this pilot effort is to provide a realistic goal for young dogs entering conformation. Administratively there is no impact on clubs, superintendents, or judges. At the end of one year, all owners who have received the POA certificate will be surveyed to determine the program s success and possible areas for improvement. AKC Reunite was discussed in relation to the current and future disasters when dogs and owners will need assistance. Clubs have been coming forward with

Board Reports, Delegate s Report and Committee Reports Page 8 donations ranging from $250 to $5,000.00. SCOA has donated $1,000.00, challenging other clubs and Saluki owners to match that amount. Archives is available to assist clubs in preserving their history. Brynn White is the AKC Archivist. AKC Marketplace is relaunching their site to better meet the needs of their core: the fancy, clubs, delegates and breeders. The marketplace will include information about each breed as provided by the clubs, to help the public make a more informed decision concerning their next dog. Canine Health discussed the impact of the influenza virus. Also continuing efforts to support research. Plus a Canine Semen Heritage program to help preserve the very rare breeds. Overview of Meeting: AKC Financial report shows improvement. A committee has been appointed to review the Judge Approval Process. Delegates viewed a demonstration of the new AKC website. It looks promising. Monica Henderson Stoner, Delegate Reports of Committees AKC Gazette Columnist The Saluki column in the AKC Gazette continues to be published in the February, May, August, and November issues. Brian Duggan Membership Committee I am proud to say we have made a few revisions on the membership application and also have an associate member application. I am going to ask they be put up on our members only section for you to see. You will still need to request an application from the membership chair. This will be my last report as chair. Time for me to move on. Terry Fortner-Jackson will be your new chairperson. It has been a pleasure. Specialty Advisory Committee The committee forwarded to the Board approved supported entries to be held with Mississippi Valley and Missouri Rhineland, prior to the National. The committee is discussing judge compensation for Regional Specialties and also who should and should not show for Regional Specialties whether independent or designated. Monica Stoner, Chair Versatility Committee This year at the 2017 National there were 10 entries competing in the Versatility Conformation Competition. The judge was Cathy Chapman, who selected DC Aspen s Ziva of Sea Wind BN RN SC CGCA CGCU as Best in Versatility. The competition had a new time slot this year on Wednesday evening to provide more specialty attendees an opportunity to appreciate the Versatility competitors. Currently we have 34 Versatility titles awarded, with 3 more already submitted for 2018. The Hall of Fame has been updated with the latest Versatility qualifiers and all the owners of Versatile salukis are encouraged to submit a photo for publication on the website. The committee will be evaluating additional events to possibly include in the program as they become available and will make adjustments to the program website as necessary. We continue to accept applications for Versatility titles, for both current salukis and those that have since passed away. The 2 year time limit for submitting applications for deceased salukis was previously rescinded and those applications can be submitted at any time. We encourage members to contact one the committee members for questions or assistance. MaryAnn Lillemo, Chair Patsy Hoy, Chair
