Retriever Review Issue 11 Founded 1975 November 2018 President's Message Happy Post Halloween! I hope all your furry ghosts and goblins are healthy and happy and enjoying the Fall weather! Hard to believe, but the January All Breed Shows are coming right up and so that means our big Annual General Membership Meeting is too! Judy and Scott Chambers have volunteered their home for the meeting. There will be more to follow on this in future Newsletters, but we hope you will plan on attending as it s always fun. I asked the Membership for feedback on whether or not we wanted to continue participating in the Pacific NW Sportsman Show. As I requested your feedback, I heard back from three members via email with positive responses for continuing to participate and Jeff Kennedy has now volunteered to Chair the event. At the last General Membership meeting (Elmers 10-26) this was discussed further and it was decided to get more information into the Newsletter with the sign up sheet with time slots ahead of time. It was felt that rushing the sign up sheet as in the past only at the January Annual Meeting was possibly part of the problem. The Club has decided to give this Event one more year and see if participation is better with this approach. If this next year still proves to be problematic with Club members participation then the Club will not partake any longer. would be fun for you and your doggies and it would help our Specialty. You could try it at the B Match in May for your first run through. Get training! Our next November meeting (Nov 16 th -Hospital) will be your last chance to bring Nominations for Board Positions/Officers. Please see Article IV Section 4 Nominations in your Membership Directory for Rules regarding Floor Nominations. Remember it takes all of us to volunteer to make this Club run! Please help with any of our up and coming events in 2019 it is fun and easy to learn what to do. This is a volunteer based Club, so to make it all happen we need your help. See you at the Next Meeting! Your President, Barb Gilchrist In an effort to increase our Obedience entries, we are including an informational sheet for those who would be encouraged to participate in our July Specialty. This is not hard to do I would think it

Subject: Upcoming AKC Show Committee Seminar in Vancouver, WA on December 6, 2018 Are you a new event committee member? Have you been working with the committee for some time but still have questions? Have you been the show chair for many years but aren't sure of all the new AKC policies? If you answered yes to any of these questions the AKC Show Committee Seminar is for you! These seminars cover topics such as AKC paperwork, superintendent & judges selection, preparing a premium list, event hearings, new AKC rules, regulations, and policies and much more! A knowledgeable and experienced AKC representative facilitates the seminar and is available to answer any of your questions about putting on the best event you can. This event will also include a presentation from the Club Development Department about adding activities to your event! Come to the AKC Show Committee Seminar to learn how to navigate the process with ease! This seminar will be held at the on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at the Heathman Lodge in Vancouver, WA. For more details and registration information please contact Bri Tesarz at glt@akc.org. From Joanne Huntley Brag On September 25th I signed up for a class to see if Stormee would jump at all. She did. I was informed there was a Dock Dog event that weekend the 29/30th with 2-3 jumps per day. So they registered her and she did the required 5 jumps. There were about 75 dogs there. This means you get 3 tries in 2 minutes per jump and they take the best for the distance jumped. She did not have to jump very far, but she had to do it by herself. The Novice Title is 5 jumps under 10 feet. Her best was 6'1". The Boston Terrior there jumped over 15 ft. So I guess she will need more practice if she is to go on. Also on Oct. 7th she received her second leg of her UKC Rally 02. 4

Member Spotlight Hi ~ I am Peggy Campbell, RCLRC charter member, 79 years old and still working full time. As a child in Salem I was a successful junior handler showing a Parti colored Cocker Spaniel. My mother raised Black Cocker Spaniels that were professionally shown. I married in 1960, moved to Portland and went to work at the Oregon Medical School for Dr. Wm. Fletcher who had a successful kennel of field hunting Black Labs. He sold me my first Lab for a dollar. This Lab had a five generation pedigree with only one dog that wasn t a field champion and many were nationally known. I joined the Cascade Obedience club and showed in Obedience. Several people mentioned that I should show my Lab in conformation. I did and he was a winner. Some handlers even pulled their dogs when I was there as they didn t want to lose to me. I was the only women showing Labs as most Labs at that time were shown by male handlers. Then I met at work Andy Stewart, who use to show goats. He was working with the breeding colony of Labs along with Dr. Joe Templeton who was at that time studying coat color in the Labrador. I also worked with Dr. Stephen Seager and our work produced the first litter of pups in the world born 5

Member Spotlight ~ Continued from frozen seimen. Andy and I, along with others that we met at the dog shows, started the club. I only bred a few litters under Tanglewood, named for the street where I was living, as I was now going to horse shows with my two daughters. One daughter and four children came back home to live, and I found I had no time for showing and breeding Labs. Eventually the Labs grew old and our house became very empty. Recently I was given a Border Terrier whose dam runs with a Fox hunting pack in Virginia. Her five generation pedigree has no champions in it and I have shown her to a conformation championship and we have earned many performance titles. Members ~ Continue to be true to the breed as the Lab is the best of all dogs! Peggy 6

Beginner Novice Tasks Heel On Leash Walk with your dog on leash in the heel position in a pattern set out by the judge following rally signs. There will be at least 1 right hand turn, 1 left hand turn and 1 about face with an autosit expected at the end. Figure 8 Walk with your dog on leash in the heel position in a figure 8 patter with periodic commands to halt. Your dog is expected to stay in heel position and autosit when asked to halt. Sit for Exam You will be asked to sit your dog, then leave your dog and walk to the end of your 6 ft leash. Then the judge will walk up and touch your dog on the head, walk back beside you and tell you to return to your dog. You must walk back to your dog and into heel position. Sit Stay You will be asked to sit your dog in the middle of the ring and then you will leave your dog, walk the inside perimeter of the ring and return to heel position next to your dog. Recall This is the only off leash task. You will be asked to sit your dog and then walk 25ft away. The judge will either signal or tell you to call your dog. Your dog then must come to you. A 'finish' is not required. 11
