Handle and care for animals to enable them to work effectively Overview This standard covers the handling and care of animals to enable them to work effectively. The work undertaken is not specified but will include any situations where individuals need to handle animals effectively so that the animals' skills can be used to support the work of individuals in a variety of situations. This standards is relevant for anyone working with animals in a specific job within the land-based and environmental sector. When working with livestock or machinery you need to be appropriately trained in line with current legislation, and hold a relevant award where appropriate. 1

Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 comply with relevant animal health and welfare, other animal-related legislation and associated codes of practice at all times P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 P7 P8 P9 carry out all work in accordance with relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and company policies correctly prepare the animal for work introduce the animal to the working environment in a manner that minimises stress check that resources are suitable for the planned work handle and control the animal in a way that will enable it to work effectively and maintain its safety maintain control in a manner that encourages the animal to achieve its potential and minimise stress encourage the animal to perform to the best of its ability and offer the appropriate reward and praise take the necessary action if the animal is not realising its potential or if unexpected circumstances arise P10 use working methods and systems that promote health and safety and are consistent with relevant legislation and codes of practice P11 maintain the health and safety of the animal throughout P12 prepare conditions for the safe receipt of the animal following the work P13 care for the animal to maintain and promote its health and well-being P14 assess the health and condition of the animal and take the appropriate action P15 re-establish the animal in its living conditions to ensure its comfort and safety 2

Knowledge and understanding You need to know and understand: K1 K2 K3 K4 K5 K6 K7 K8 K9 your responsibilities under relevant animal health and welfare, and other animal-related legislation and codes of practice your responsibilities under current environmental and health and safety legislation, codes of practice and company policies the different preparations that are necessary to enable the animal to work effectively in relation to its type, breed and the work it has to do methods of handling and moving animals, which promote their health and welfare and minimise their stress the resources that will be necessary for the work and their correct methods of use aspects of the environment that may affect the animal and signs that indicate this the limitations of the animal breed and of the particular animal concerned methods of handling and controlling the animal effectively in the situations in which it is being worked methods of encouraging the animal to work effectively K10 the actions that may be necessary to respond to contingency situations K11 methods of maintaining the health and safety of animals after they have worked and the particular requirements that they may have K12 particular welfare requirements of different animals following work K13 methods of assessing the health and condition of animals and the health requirements that they may have following work K14 methods of caring for the animal to maintain its health and well-being K15 rest requirements after different kinds of work and the rest periods that they need prior to starting work again K16 the living conditions that will promote the health and safety of the animal, and any particular requirements for these following work 3
