PawPrints Magazine's Cat Cover Model Winner Photo by: Michael Cline Photography Everyone at PawPrints Magazine and Michael Cline Photography made Uno's cover model shoot a very special experience. Everyone treated Uno like a star. We also want to thank Aunt Kerry's Pet Stop for the generous gifts; one of our cats is always nestled in the cushy cat bed we were given. I can't even count the number of times awwww or he's so handsome was said the day of Uno's photos. We were so moved to see Uno (our 17-yearold, one-eyed, rescue cat) strutting around, being treated like a strapping supermodel. Our hope is that someone will see Uno's story and be inspired to open up their home to an older or special needs cat, giving the sweet feline the second chance they so truly deserve. ~ Justin & Emily Mills-Ward Photo by: Michael Cline Photography

My name is Bear Bear and I have had a very sad life thus far and hope you can find some compassion to give me a furever home. Due to the downturn in the economy, my mommy and daddy abandoned their home and me in it. Problem is, the new homeowners were not cat lovers and kicked me out even when I was emaciated and sick from almost starvation! Kind neighbors fed me through the years to help me to survive during the cold and hot months outside until one day I was attacked and couldn t walk. A nice lady took me in, paid all my vet bills, got me neutered, groomed, and healthy again. She is now looking for a home for me since she has way too many animals to care for me. I am potty-trained, have all my shots, super sweet, gentle, like other animals and a total love bug! I did test positive for FIV. Although the experts say it can only be transferred through a bite wound, which with only two little teeth is probably not going to happen. I am a lover and not a fighter! I just want to look at you and purr. Please help me today, my time is running out. Contact my foster mommy today by calling 910-538-2299 or emailing dharrelson2@gmail.com. Please do your part to make the world a little better by helping a helpless animal. I was taken in by my friends at Wilmington Animal Healthcare, but it is now time for me to find my forever home! I am a loving and gentle lady who loves hugs, kisses, playing fetch, and sunbathing. I am around 7-yearsold and was given a clean bill of health by my doctor friends! I am spayed, heartworm negative, and up to date on all of my vaccinations. If you would like to meet me or would like further information, please contact Wilmington Animal Healthcare at 910-791-7101. I am sponsored by Wilmington Animal Healthcare. Thank you! Hi, I'm Kit! I am one of a litter of eight kittens who were abandoned in a crate with our mama. The assistant manager of Pender Humane Society took all of us home to foster until there was room for us at the shelter. I am the last kitten left of the entire litter Mama and my siblings have all found homes. I am a very sweet boy who greets everyone at the door when people come to visit. I love to play and I get along great with my other feline friends! I am a 2-year-old, neutered male and I m vaccinated and litterboxtrained. Swing by the shelter to meet me and you will see just how friendly I am! For driving directions or more information, please call Pender Humane Society at 910-259-7022. Sponsored in memory of Milo, the big black dog who stole our hearts! Mommy and Daddy miss you every day! I m Rex, an 8-month-old, 17 pound Terrier mix who is looking for a furever home. I love taking long walks, playing with all my toys and snuggling up to my foster brother for snooze time. I would love to have a fenced yard and another dog to play with or older children who will play with me. To adopt me, call Cape Fear Rescue League at 910-207-2071. Sponsored in loving memory of Roxy. 4 www.pawprintsmagazine.com May 2017

Hey everyone, my name is Frank. I'm waiting for my forever home and I am hoping that even though I am a German dog, I have the luck of the Irish! I am 8-years-old, neutered, current on core vaccinations and heartworm preventative. I really want to be your new best friend - but I just know I'll like you so much that it would be best for me not to have any other pets or children in the home. I am just a "one dog" kind of man, you know? I have been at the Dog Club of Wilmington for months but since I don't share humans well, I don't spend much time in the play yard. I would really like to go for walks or hang out with you on the sofa, and I don't need much exercise so I'm a pretty low-key guy. If you'd like to know more about me, please check out the website www.tarheelweimrescue.org or call my Tarheel Weimeraner Rescue foster mom at 910-232-5910. I am sponsored by the Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar in Carolina Beach. My name is Tommy (34858686) and I m a super special guy. Everyone has known a cat like me - the tough exterior with a heart of mush. Well, that's me for sure! I was surrendered along with my sibling who was immediately adopted because of a more extroverted personality. It's not that I m an introvert - I m just simply confused, heartbroken, and feel abandoned. In less than a week, I came out of (hiding and) my shell and I m starting to enjoy life's simple pleasures. I have a unique way of saying "Hello" but don't be fooled - I m testing your level of commitment. I enjoy being massaged aggressively and head-scratches are literally my catnip. If you pause, I ll reach up and gently pull you back into scratching my head. I would make an excellent lap companion or napping partner. I could be your FOREVER crush if you would just open your heart and home to me! I am 2-years-old and neutered. I m at Onslow County Animal Services, located at 244 Georgetown Road in Jacksonville. For info, call the adoption desk at 910-937-1164 or 910-455-0182. Come and meet me and all of my adorable friends at the Monkey Junction Petsmart (Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm). Please call 919-710-3872 for more info or check out our Facebook page: All4CatsRescue. I m already spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. COLUMBUS HUMANE SOCIETY We re Gnot and Gnat and we re Dalmatian and Lab mixes. We're 5-months-old and up to date on vaccines. We re both very friendly but can be shy at first. We love to play with toys and are learning to walk on a leash. Our temperament is great and we re good with kids and other dogs. If you are interested in adopting or have any questions about us, please contact Columbus Humane Society at 910-499-1148. RESCUECONNECT My name is Theo and I am a Walker Hound who is 8 to 10-years-old. I am neutered, house-trained, crate-trained and love going for walks! I get along well with doggies and kitties but I do need a human who is patient with me. You see, I am frightened easily but once I'm comfortable with my surroundings, I am a happy boy! Would you be willing to give me a chance to join your family? Please fill out an application at www.rescueconnectnc.com or call 910-302-7290 for more info or to schedule a meet and greet! ANIMAL AVENGERS My name is Sandy and I m a Yellow Lab mix who weighs around 70 pounds. I was pregnant when I came into rescue and had 2 puppies. They have both found loving homes so I m ready to find a family of my own. I am spayed, vaccinated, housetrained, crate-trained and leash-trained. I did test heartworm positive but I m undergoing treatment. To meet me, complete an application on our website at animalavengersnc.org. For more info, call 910-777-7186 or email to animalavengersnc@gmail.com. OPERATION TOPCAT My name is Duvay and I m a sweet, gentle girl. I had a home but was left behind when they moved away. A neighbor took me in and contacted Operation Topcat for help. I m a 2-year-old brown Tabby with white and I ve had all of my vet care. I tested negative for Feline Leukemia and FIV, had my vaccines and was microchipped. I don t mind other cats but I ve not been around dogs. I love people and being petted and that makes me a Lap Cat for sure. Won't you consider giving her a loving inside home. To adopt me, email otopcatnc@aol.com or call 910-200-0612. NHC RABBIT RESCUE OF WILMINGTON My name is Kenny (RR112) and I m a silver Mini Rex. I m 1-year-old, 5 pounds and neutered. I was an owner surrender because my owner did not bond with me because of my shy disposition. I do not like being held and handled that much. I was purchased at a local pet store as a baby with another rabbit. My previous owner wanted me to find a owner who was more experienced and better suited for my behavior. I will come up to you and tolerate you petting me, however, I am skittish. I was not familiar with a litter box until I came to the rescue and I am progressing well. If you re interested, email NHCRabbitRescue@gmail.com, call 910-686-9171 or visit us at www.nhcrabbitrescue.com. 8 www.pawprintsmagazine.com May 2017

Please call 910-392-0557 to adopt us! Adopt-An-ANGEL My name is Precious and I am a 12-month-old Boxer/Pit mix. I came to Adopt-An- ANGEL after I was hit by a car. I had a broken leg and some road rash that has all healed. I am now ready to go. I am a playful, friendly, typical teenage puppy. I love to cuddle and be near my family. I am crate-trained and leash-trained, too. If you would like to meet me, please call my foster mom, Sherry, at 910-523-1254. My name is Belle. You may remember me. I have been homeless before. When Adopt-An- ANGEL kept finding me after I got loose from my house, it was clear that I needed a new home. I need a home with a fenced in yard and someone with experience with my breed, since I am pretty strong. Most of all, I need someone who will be committed to me. I am so friendly and affectionate and so pretty. I would do best as an only pet. My name is Jewell and I am a 2-year-old, pastel brindle Labrador Retriever and Pit Bull mix. I do well with other dogs, but I haven t been around a cat yet. I prefer a home with older kids. I walk well on a leash and don t pull at all. I am housetrained, love to go for car rides and absolutely would love a home with a fenced in yard. I already know my name, and the commands: come, sit and leave it. I am a fast learner who is treat motivated and eager to please. I have a warm, gentle, loving personality and love to be right by my human. I am very wary of men; especially tall men with deep voices. I will relax if they are gentle and calm with me. My name is Guinness and I am an absolutely super dog. I am well balanced and pretty easy. I am a middle aged, mid-sized dog. I have a tumor on the side of my leg that Adopt-An- ANGEL is having removed. Once that is done, I will be ready to go. I would make a great companion for a family with kids, or actually anyone who wants a dog who will lay at their feet and just love them unconditionally. My friends call me Dolph. I am a great dog. I am mid-sized with a fantastic, even temperament. I seem to do well with other dogs and kids, too. I haven't been around cats. I walk well on a leash with a moderate energy level. I am a well-socialized and an overall happy-go-lucky guy. Come meet me at Petco on weekends or call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783. My name is Poppy. I am a shy, sweet, scared little girl. I am young and I weigh just 45 pounds. I absolutely MUST get adopted by someone who has another dog, a fenced in yard and kids older than 12. I need to go with someone who has a little experience with shy, scared dogs. I just need a home with someone who is looking for a companion for their dog. I love dogs and need one to teach me the ropes. I will follow another dog's lead and will go wherever he or she goes. I am submissive and don't have a mean bone in my body. I don't need a home where people want to take me places. I don't need to go to a dog park, the beach, or a pet store. I don't need to go anywhere but the vet - when I have to. This will limit the chance of me getting lost. I am a flight risk when I panic. Come meet me at Petco on weekends! P.O. Hi, my name is Seva and I am a 2-year-old female Great Dane. My previous owner surrendered me to the nice people at Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love a few months ago. I have settled in nicely at my foster home. I attach quickly to my people, and I love to lean for rubs and give kisses. I am crate-trained and house-trained. I love meeting other dogs my size and I do ok with smaller dogs, too. My foster mom says that I don t know how big I am and get so excited to play. But I m just a young girl excited about life, so can you really blame me? My foster mom thinks that I am going to be a tall, lean Dane. She says that I have legs for days! I am trying to pack on a few pounds before going to my forever family, but sometimes that s hard since I m not really food motivated. Foster Mom thinks that as I age, the pounds will stick and I ll be even more beautiful than I already am. I am looking for a loving and structured forever home where my new parents will take the time to continue my obedience training. For an adoption application, please email greatdanefriend@yahoo.com, call 704-584-9257 or visit www.greatdanefriends.com. I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you! Blue Tick Sugar Images 910.477.7498 renee@blueticksugarimages.com Let me capture your dog's personality with a photograph. I shoot casual, outdoor portraits using natural light. Super-friendly, affectionate and gorgeous! That s me, Sarah, in a nutshell. Come on over and see for yourself! You ll find me congregating happily with the other cats in the playroom because I love them, too. I ll even rub my chin on another cat s chin in a friendly greeting. CAT: Cat Adoption Team Please call 910-792-9014 to adopt us! We re at Petsmart 7 days a week. Hey, I'm Faye! I'm a Patch Tabby kitten girl and I m so very, very sweet! I love to snuggle, purr, and talk to get your attention. I also love to play, especially tag! Don't worry about my eyes. They are good, and I can see just fine. I love wet food and treats. I get along well with other cats. In fact, I should not be an only kitten because I'll feel too lonely without a playmate. Come to Petsmart soon so we can fall in love. You won t be able to resist me! Hi, I'm Kelly, an 8-month-old black and white girl. I m sweet, petite, and a bit shy at first, but I love to be petted and will purr all day long if you scratch behind my ears or under my chin. Please don't overlook me due to my quiet, timid nature. I have a lot of love to offer, just give me a little time to trust you. Hey there, in case you didn't know, Kitten Season is here again! That means there are lots of kittens who need to be rescued! I'm a young momma, and I feel so lucky that the Cat Adoption Team was able to save me and my babies. Now we'll have a second chance to find new forever homes. Many more kittens can be rescued if you can volunteer to foster! All you have to do is provide a temporary home for a momma cat and her litter until the kittens are weaned and ready for adoption. Please call 910-599-2755 and help save some precious kittens. Foster homes needed for MOMMA CATS and KITTENS, just until they re weaned! Call 910-599-2755 for more information. Hi, I'm Willow, an 8-month-old girl. I am an extremely sweet and social kitten with the adorable habit of sticking my tongue out. I enjoy playing alone or with other cats. One of my favorite places to play is underneath a bed sheet. Once I am comfortable with you, I will sleep on you at night. If you're the lucky one to adopt me, I'll be an extremely loving and dedicated companion! Hi, I m Gordo! I'm a 1-year-old black and white medium-haired boy. I'm super affectionate, handsome, and social. I am a serious talker and a lap cat who will follow you around to get your attention. I love attention so much that I should be the only cat in the house. I am good with calm dogs. I'm truly the sweetest guy and want nothing more than to snuggle or be carried around in your arms. I m at the CAT Adoption Center in PetSmart. Hope I get to meet you soon! I'm Lana, a 1-year-old gray and white Tabby girl. My owner had to surrender me, and I miss her so much. I'm both a lover and a snuggler, so I miss having human contact. I'm really looking forward to having my own human bed again, where I can snuggle with a human friend and have my very own toys. By the way, I am good with children. I'm upset being in a cage, so please visit me at the CAT Adoption Center at PetSmart and consider giving me a chance. Please call 910-253-1375 to adopt us! Cat Tails I m the last Kardashian to be adopted and my name is Khloe. I need someone to protect me and love me. Unlike the real Kardashians, I can be a bit shy so it s better if you visit me at the Cat Tails shelter. On top of that Petsmart makes me sneeze, which isn t a good look for me. Come take a part of reality TV home with you. By the way, I ll be 2-years-old on the 15th. Let s throw a party! My name is Bonnie and I m 3-years-old. Everyone says that I m exceptionally sweet and, as you can see, I m a very pretty Calico. I came to Cat Tails with four kittens, but they have been adopted and I m still here. I get along with the other cats and I love people, so I think I would be a wonderful addition to your family. Don t you? If you re looking for a wonderful 5-year-old to join your family, look no farther. I m Stella! I m even cuter than my picture shows. I had an ear infection when I was younger that left me with a little head tilt, so I always look like I have an important question. Actually, I do have an important question: Can I be a part of your family? You think you have allergy problems? I say, HA! My name is Max and I am a beautiful gray boy who is 3-years-old. I have gorgeous fur, but my allergies can cause my splendid coat to get patchy and ragged. It was a mess when this picture was taken and I was so embarrassed. I take an allergy pill and that helps. Special non-prescription food helps, too. They say I m super friendly, love people and cats, and am in constant search of a lap to sit in. Take me home and maybe your house will be allergy free! If I could use an umbrella to fly to your house, I would, but I only have the name Mary Poppins. I m a very shy longhaired Torti and I m looking for a quiet home with people who will give me lots of time to adjust. I m only 7-yearsold so I have years of love to give. I m already spayed and vaccinated and also front declawed. Do you like to dance? I don t, even though I m named after a dance. I m Shimmy and as you can see, I m a seal point Siamese mix. I came to Cat Tails with a flea infestation and I was a big mess! That s all cleared up now and I m looking pretty good - if I do say so myself! Now all I need is a forever home. How about if I share yours? 6622 Beach Drive SW, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469 www.cattails.org May 2017 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 17

My name is Pearl. My brother, Simba (on page 38), and I are the only ones saved from our litter. I am a beautiful white Calico with beautiful blue eyes. I am scared of dogs even though I have been around small ones in my foster mom's house. I have become curious and I love to lay on my back to make my foster family laugh. I have been exposed to smaller dogs, kids, and other cats. I don't do well with anyone except my other littermates. I am very scared of a lot of noise. I would be a great companion for an older couple or a quiet house. Please contact my foster mom, Jackie, at 910-523-9719. For more information on the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. I am sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you!

Hey, I'm Victor! I'm a long-haired, 6-year-old, black boy. I was abandoned outside by my owners when they moved. I lived outdoors for a few years, until I was rescued by a compassionate neighbor. It didn't take long for people to realize how amazingly sweet and affectionate I am. As my foster mom says, Victor is the sweetest, most loving foster kitty I've ever had. All I want is to snuggle and be loved. I'll purr for hours for you! I am good with other cats and dogs. Come meet me soon and consider adopting me! You won't regret it! I m at the C.A.T. PAW S Place Please call 910-845-7297 to adopt us! (Call for a pre-adoption application and adoption fee info.) I m Kayla and I might be on the small side but my ears certainly are not! I could fly away with these things. I am a bit shy at first but I warm up quickly. With my ears and cute little nose, I sort of resemble a little pig! I am a Basenji mix and just about a year old. I am the perfect size for someone who would like a dog on the smaller side. I am also spayed and ready to go! Come say hello to me. Woof! I'm Tessa, a Red Tick Coonhound with the softest, floppiest ears. I am about 8-years-old but I still know how to have fun! Once the fun is over though, it s nap time. I love to sunbathe, I love the water, I love going on adventures and I need that special someone. Come to the kennel to see me, we are open every day from 9am -12 Noon. Hey there, it s me, Kyle! I am spending my days in a quiet household with other dogs. I like to play with dogs, especially puppies, but I am quite shy with new people. I just celebrated my first birthday and I love to carry around my new toys. I m a Setter/Spaniel mix who is house-trained, I use a doggy door, and I have a favorite bed that keeps me safe. I would do best with a patient person or family with a fenced yard as I do not enjoy leashed walks. Ideally, I will find a match without young children as they can be louder and faster moving. Email Sarah@PawsPlace.org if you d like to meet me! Paws Place named me Smiley because I get so excited to see people that I curl my top lip and shake my entire body. It is too cute and so funny, you must come and see! Unfortunately, I am heartworm positive, but don t worry, Paws Place will take care of the cost. I am a tall and slender Lab mix boy, a little over a year old, with so much love to give. Come see my silly self and watch me smile! It s me, Marley! I m a 3-year-old Lab/Chow mix weighing 73 pounds. I will play fetch for hours, maybe even days, if you'd let me! I respond well to positive training tactics and a good pack leader. I would do best in a family without children under age 15 since I am big and could knock them over! I get along great with dogs my size and energy level. Come to the shelter and check me out in action! Prince Charming is my name and charming humans is my game. I m a Shepherd mix, 2-years-old and 40 pounds. I have put some meat on my bones since my arrival here. I was sadly tied to a tree with little access to icky water. The humans here say I am a royal boy, perhaps it has something to do with my name? I am starting to learn what it is like to be a dog. I have made lots of friends at the shelter, dogs and humans, but I am ready for my forever friend! Come meet me, maybe the glass slipper will fit! 3701 Boiling Spring Road, Winnabow, NC 28479 www.pawsplace.org May 2017 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 21

Hi, my name is Kandi. I am the only one saved from my litter. I am a very timid and scared little girl but sweet as candy. I have been exposed to other cats, kids, and dogs in my foster home but I need absolutely no dogs in my forever home. I am going to take so much effort and time to drop the emotional baggage of my past. Unless you are devoted to spending time with me, I will not be the kitty for you. I am alright with kids but do not care for the noise or energy level a kid has. I must be an indoor kitty and you should start me off in a small room at first and allow me time to settle in. Will you be my hero? Contact my foster mom, Jackie, at 910-523-9719. If you d like to inquire about the adoption process, call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. I am sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you! My name is Logan and I m a young, energetic, 45 pound boy who is neutered, vaccinated, housetrained and crate-trained. I was born in October 2015. My parents lived in a salvage yard and that is where I was born. Sadly, my puppyhood was not in a home with a family so I was not socialized with people until coming into foster. I am very shy and fearful of new people so I would do best in a calm home environment with no kids. I love playing with my foster brother and sisters and will need to have at least one confident canine sibling to set an example and help me continue to build up my confidence. I had a rough start in life, but I m ready to blossom with the love and encouragement from the right family. Could it be yours? Feature Story PawPrints Magazine s 15th Annual Cover Model Search The Judges Decisions Are In: Winning Cover Cat and Runners-Up Winning Cover Cat Uno Submitted by: Justin Mills-Ward I rescued Uno 12-years ago, when he was a 5-year-old stray living on the grounds of a landscaping company. He lost his left eye as a kitten due to an untreated respiratory infection, and as a result, he still gets respiratory infections regularly. I was 22 and fresh out of college when I rescued Uno and brought him into my first apartment to keep me company. I'll never forget our first day together; the poor guy had never been in a car before, 1 st Runner-Up Ray Charles Submitted by: Tara Arnette Ray Charles is a cat like no other. We first met on September 2, 2014 in the Burgaw cemetery as I was out for a bike ride. A small movement caught my eye so I pulled my bike to the side of the road to investigate. Without hesitation this tiny little kitten came running towards me and my heart dropped as I looked into his face and could barely make out his tiny features. At just a couple pounds, Ray was abandoned on the side of the road and left for dead. I called my sister for assistance and as the sun was setting we searched for an open vet, luckily we were able to rush him in and have him checked over. I had just thought his eyes were crusted over and was shocked to discover he only had 1 tiny undeveloped eyeball - poor little guy couldn t see anything and probably never would. Over the next couple of months, Ray fought off several health issues including stomach bugs and allergies. Thousands of dollars and countless hours were spent at the vet; Ray never complained - so neither did we. With every visit to the vet he would just lie on the table purring, somehow knowing we were there to help him. He endured daily baths and eye washes, test after test, as my sister and I nursed him to a happy and healthy kitty. Photo by Emily Mills-Ward so the ride to the apartment was very chaotic. But as soon as he got in my room, he licked my face and fell asleep on my lap, as though it was right where he belonged. The next day I took him to the vet and got him all cleaned up and healthy. He's been my best friend since the day I met him. One year after I adopted him, my father passed away. Even though I wanted to be alone, Uno never let me. He stayed by my side every minute of the ensuing week. Before I met Uno, I never gave much thought to animals and their lives. However, Uno's unwavering love and loyalty was unlike anything I had ever experienced. Before I knew it, I was a vegetarian...and then I was a vegan...and then I was an animal rights activist. I found myself volunteering for wildlife rehab centers and animal shelters. Then, three years ago, I co-founded a 501c3, no-kill cat rescue here in Wilmington. I know that the course of my life was shaped by my sweet, one-eyed, orange cat. Uno is now 17 and can be found in our home nuzzled up against one of our 5 other rescue cats or napping on one of our laps. He has kidney disease and gets subcutaneous fluid injections daily, but Uno just sits, smiles, and purrs as he is treated. Uno is the ideal cover model because he shows that a cat doesn't need to be perfect-looking to be perfect. He may be different, but he puts a smile on the face of every living being with whom he interacts. Uno is proof that all animals, regardless of their appearance, health, or background, deserve a safe and loving home. Rescue animals have the power to change lives; Uno definitely changed mine. I often forget Ray is blind, as he easily maneuvers around my sister s house and he still runs up to me when I visit, just like on the first day we met. Ray will probably always have health issues, but today he is the happiest cat I know. Ray has turned us into cat people. Reasons Ray Charles should be a cover model: 1. His name is hilarious 2. Statistically black cats have the lowest adoption rate 3. I think he is the most handsome cat around 4. He isn t bothered by a camera flash 5. He is awesome 32 www.pawprintsmagazine.com May 2017

Feature Story 2 nd Runner-Up Lux Submitted by: Tiffany Hoots In May 2010, my mother stopped during a rainstorm to move what she thought was a turtle out of the street. Turns out, that turtle was actually a tiny, rain-drenched kitten. She was so young when we met her that her eyes were still matted shut. She could fit in the palm of our hands. Looking back at the shape she was in, I am amazed that she survived those first few nights. I did not expect her to live very long. We tried for a couple of weeks to adopt her to one of our friends or to take her to the local humane society to be adopted; however, no luck on either front. By this time, I had fallen in love with this tiny ball of energy; even though she had yet to sleep through a single night. Me, a self-described dog person who was happy raising my 6-year=old cockapoo, Reese; and never wanted a cat, was head over heels in love with this one. The thought of letting her go to someone else was heartbreaking. So, she became my baby and I became her mom, Lux s mom. I am not sure of the circumstances that brought Lux out in the rain that day or into the road that my mom was driving on. But I am thankful every day for them. I am thankful every day for this uninhibited, adventurous, strong-willed little girl that I am lucky enough to know and love. Lux lives life on her terms and is very independent. But when I put my hand down to gauge whether or not she wants me to pet her and she nuzzles my hand as to say yes, mom nothing makes my heart happier. I never wanted a cat. As I said, I was not a cat person. Finding Lux and coming to love her was the last thing my heart expected. But over the past 6.5 years, Lux has taught me that it s the unexpected that changes our lives. And in this case, for the better. She has filled our home with immeasurable joy and laughter. In my completely non-biased opinion, there is no cat more deserving of the Paw- Prints cover than Lux. Her life truly is a miracle and miracles deserved to be celebrated. And I challenge you not to take one look at her and fall irrevocably in love just as I have. 3 rd Runner-Up Orion Submitted by: Cianna Anderson Orion (or Orty for short) fell out of a tree in my yard, no older than a month, in July 2015. Four days were spent trying to rescue her. When my mom finally caught her, she put up a fight but once she realized we were there to help, she purred all night while kneading our rescue dog's plush butt. Orion has changed life for the better, even though I've lost many nights of sleep to her loudly gifting her toy mice, it's all worth it because I love her more than anything ever before. I believe she is God sent because I had been wanting a therapy animal to help cope with PTSD and depression. Without a doubt, I know she has healed me and she is now a certified emotional support animal. Orion has introduced me to such a tenacious love that I've never experienced before. She is my spider-hunting, neighborhood spy, houseplant destroying companion that I wouldn't trade for the world. I'm so grateful to have her as my side-kick. She has brought me a deeper understanding of animals. If there is one thing Orion would want me to say, it would be to spay and neuter your pets, so less kittens are alone on the streets like she was. Orion may be a rescue but she's done all the saving. 4 th Runner-Up Katie Submitted by: Barbara Galvin Katie was adopted over 3-years ago from pet smart charities adoptions. Since her adoption Katie has become the manager of Two Sisters Bookery in downtown Wilmington at the Cotton Exchange. Katie welcomes everyone to the store and loves all the attention and loving she gets from kids and adults both. She has claimed the front window as her own and lures many people in when they see her. Every time I post something on Facebook with Katie in it, I'll get 10 times the hits!! She lives here at the store and is our guard kitty. She makes so many people happy that people stop in all the time just to see her. Katie should be on the cover because she is an awesome kitty with a big heart. She loves kids, adults end even dogs! She's the must lovable laid back kitty ever. I know she has changed our store for the better. Please check out the June issue for Dog and Cat Honorable Mentions! Please call 910-579-0407 to adopt us! R.A.C.E. (Rescue Animals Community Effort) My name is Noah and I ve had a rough start. I am only about 12-weeks-old and I had something called mange. It's all gone now, but boy was it itchy! My foster mom helped me get rid of it and now I want a family of my own. I like people and other dogs and I'm very sweet - or so my foster mom says. Won t you please adopt me? I promise to love you unconditionally. Umm, hi there. My name is Brinley. I'm a Spaniel mix and I'm really, really shy. I'm starting to get the hang of things at my foster mom's house. She has two dogs of her own and I watch them and take my cues from them. I'm about 8-months-old and as you can see, I'm super cute but I need to have a household that understands shy/ timid dogs. If you think you can help me come out of my shell, please call us today. You may also fill out an application at www.raceshelter.org. Howdy everyone! My name is Teddy and I'm a 10 pound Chihuahua and Miniature Pinscher mix. I'm housetrained and just perfect. My foster mom says, "I would really love to find someone who understands the beauty in our senior dogs. I wish I could explain what I mean but until you just sit with them in stillness and receive the love they so freely give, you can't fathom the joy they bring to your life. I invite you to share my joy by adopting Teddy from RACE." And I couldn t agree with her more. Yawn!!! Oh, I have to get up and tell you about myself don't I? Well, my name is Willow. I'm about 16-weeksold and I'm a Cattle Dog mix. I love, love, love to play with other dogs and my foster mom takes me to work with her at the grooming shop. I love all the other dogs there and I get to sleep in this comfy bed there. I am very friendly and good with other dogs and kids. Don't you want to take me home? OK, well I've had a hard day playing with the other dogs, so I'm going back to sleep. Clancy is in the house! I am only about 18-months-old and I'm sweet and loveable. I'm a Wire-Haired Terrier mix and I like everyone that I meet. I'd love to find a roommate who will love me furever! I've been told that shouldn't be hard to do. I'm only about 13 pounds, so I m easy to carry, too. Want to meet me? Please call us today or fill out an adoption application on our website at www.raceshelter.org. Hey there everyone! My name is Rocky. I weigh about 60 pounds, but have no idea what my heritage is. Do you? If you think you can guess my heritage correctly, go to R.A.C.E.'s Facebook page and post it there. R.A.C.E. is having a contest and the closest could win. They will be doing a DNA test to find out. Until then, I'm looking for a forever home. I'm looking for someone who can appreciate that I'm NOT a purebred - I'm purely unique!! I am very social and like everyone I meet. I'm also pretty active, so I want to find a person who likes to go on long walks on the beach. I'm about 1-year-old, so I have lots of energy and love to give. C'mon, you know you want to fill out an application on me!! P.O. Box 3370, Shallotte, NC 28459 www.raceshelter.org May 2017 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 37

Hi, my name is Simba. My sister, Pearl (on page 18), and I are the only ones saved from our litter. Dogs were chasing and killing our family. Since then, I have come so far. I used to just stay in a ball and hide. Now, I walk around with confidence and meow to let you know when I want attention. I am starting to show signs of curiosity, too. I have been around kids, small dogs, and cats. I do not do well with a lot of noise. I would be a better companion for an older couple or in a home where I will get a lot of one on one attention. Please call my foster mom, Jackie, at 910-523-9719. If you d like to know more about the adoption process, call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. I m sponsored in honor of all the wonderful foster mommies & daddies who care for homeless animals. URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! There must be some mistake! How can a friendly, Great Dane mix girl like me have been waiting for a family for so long now? I ve been living at the shelter for over 30 days, sitting patiently, showing everyone my sweet nature. I adore children and I ve gotten along well with the other dogs here. Perhaps now that you ve read about me, you ll come visit and consider bringing me home as your new best friend! My name is Charlotte (A024384) and I m a 2-year-old, 80 pound girl, already spayed. I was found as a stray, but my friendly demeanor suggests I once belonged to someone. Won t you please give me a second chance at life? I ll be so grateful! Hurry, though, dogs arrive every day and there s just not enough room for us all. The shelter is open 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, Noon to 4pm on Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. Please call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1484 or email jhorton@pendercountync.gov for more info. I am sponsored in loving memory of Hank Harrington. Please call 910-457-6340 to adopt us! I am Lexi - a 2½year-old, 40 pound people lover! The volunteers say I am one of the smartest dogs at the rescue - I can run the agility course better than anybody! But...I'm as energetic as I am smart - so I need a little (or a lot) more exercise than most of my canine friends. It would be great if my furever Mom or Dad liked to run - then I could go with them! I went to training at K9 Academy and I did pretty good there playing in a pack. I m spayed, vaccinated, on heartworm prevention and ready to go live in a cat-free home with my loving family. Come meet me! Ever heard of a Basset Hound/Pit Bull mix? I m one, and I m the coolest dude you will ever meet! I am Winston, a dog lover s dream. My butt wiggles so much when I'm happy that sometimes I can't even walk straight! I love to sit on your lap and get head rubs - but my favorite is BELLY rubs! I'll stop and drop for those ANY time! I have been doing awesome with commands and leash-walking skills - just don't walk too fast or my short legs cant keep up! Oh, I am about 2½-years-old and weigh about 35 pounds. A cat-free home with loving people is all I need. Hello! If you want a cutie pie, stop looking 'cause that's ME!! My name is Biscuit and when I was pulled from Animal Protective Services they said I am 2-years-old, but the girls at SOAR think I may be younger! I'm a funny, silly and sweet little boy who is litterbox-trained, neutered and vaccinated. Hurry over, sign the papers and let s go home! SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) Greetings everyone! They call me Andy, as in Dandy. I m at SOAR after catching a van ride out of Animal Protective Services. The volunteers and folks on the Sheriff s staff took good care of me during my brief stay there, having been previously found guilty of the crime(?) of being too big for my home. I mean, I weigh less than 45 pounds, for goodness sakes! I m thought to be part of the Plott Hound family and I m neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Let s meet! Could I be a member of your family? My name is Holly, and I m a Hound mix girl who came to SOAR this past Christmas (thus the name Holly!) I just turned 1-year-old and am having so much fun playing with other dogs and going for walks and mastering the agility course. But nothing would make me happier than my very own home. I have so much love to give and all I need is you! Looking for a long-legged Southern girl? Well, look no further! I m Chloe, a 3-year-old mix of possibly Walker Hound, Fox Hound, Whippet and maybe Greyhound! But regardless, I am a sweet girl with lots of energy - so YES - I need a fenced-in yard where I can run and play. I weigh about 30 pounds and am doing great with my leash-walking skills. I just know I will be your best girl ever! 3376 St. Charles Place Southport, NC 28461 www.soar-nc.org May 2017 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 39

Dr. Christian Bolz Dr. Debbie Bolz Dr. Colleen Peat Ok, so I know what you re thinking as you look at my picture. You re thinking, Awwww, isn t she just precious!!! Why yes - I am precious! This, and my owl-like eyes, is exactly why I was named Precious Hoot by the CARE volunteers. I was found outside all alone with a broken hip and tail, but no matter what has happened to me in my past, my love for people has never faltered. I am searching for a special someone to spend the rest of my cat-tastic life with. I do require a little extra effort on your part but it is pretty basic and I am certain my personality will make you more than willing to accommodate my special need. If you love cuddling all year round, and you think kitties with little nub tails are adorable, then I think we d be a match made in heaven! And If you enjoy playtime, especially with bird toys, that s an extra plus! I know that a special person is out there ready to love me and I can t wait to meet them. Maybe it ll be you! Call 910-256-2624 for more info. I am sponsored by Atlantic Animal Hospital who supports Coastal Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.). URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! How can a kitty named Miss Marshmallow (A024565) be running out of time? I m a declawed girl, 8-years-old, who deserves nothing more than a relaxing environment to live out my golden years! I m solid white, already spayed, litterbox-trained, and ready to be the crown jewel of your home! I m not a fan of being picked up, but I enjoy being petted for a time. Then I ll watch birds from the window or take a nap. You see, I m not a demanding kitty who constantly looks for attention, so rest assured I ll be perfectly fine while you re at work or play. Just give me a cozy home, good food, lots of love and I ll be content! Since I m declawed, I ll need to be kept inside, safe out of harm s way. But please hurry! Cats arrive every day and there s just not enough room for us all. For driving directions or more info, call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259- 1484 or email jhorton@pendercountync.gov. I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal. 910-313-3326 6005 Carolina Beach Road (1 mile south of Monkey Junction across from Harris Teeter) A portion of the proceeds from every real estate closing goes to local animal rescues. Breed Rescues We are all from different Breed Rescues. Please read our stories! GREAT DANE RESCUE ALLIANCE My name is Addie and I m a beautiful, 3-year-old brindle girl. I was an owner surrender and very well taken care of. I'm wellbehaved on a leash, love to go for walks and do great in a car. When I'm not cuddling up next to my human, I'm napping somewhere else. I'm house-trained and ring a bell on the door when I need to go out. As loving as I am towards humans, I can become protective and would thrive as an only dog. I'm already spayed, microchipped and current on vaccines. Visit www.greatdanerescuealliance.org, email greatdanerescuealliance@gmail.com or call 704-559-4121 for more information. CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE I m Elvis and I am a happy-golucky-guy! I am 10-years young, crate-trained and house-trained! I love to take walks with my foster mom and I would even like to run with someone who jogs! I am a very spunky Basset Hound! I love humans and I will immediately roll over for a belly rub! I do well with other dogs and cats but I am not fond of them getting in my space so I would do best as an only dog. If you are looking for a low key Basset Hound who can be a couch potato when you want to relax but also play and go for walk - I m your guy! To adopt me, contact my foster mom, Leslie, at 910-352-5150 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com. GREYHOUND FRIENDS OF NC - WILMINGTON My name is Devon and I m a 72 pound, 2½year-old, red fawn boy. I walk well on lead as I aim to please. Please contact Roy at 910-200- 6737 for more information on me. For most of my life, I lived outside and chained up. I was fed and given water but I didn't really get to see any doctors. Right around the time I was 3-years-old, I ended up here at the rescue where I finally saw a doctor. I was treated for heartworms and now I am totally better and ready to be adopted! I love my life now. I play all day with a bunch of new dog friends and I love my foster moms (who work at Dog Club of Wilmington). They all love me and say my tail is always wagging! My perfect home will be one without children. I am house-trained and crate-trained! To know more about me, visit www.tarheelweimrescue.org or call my foster mom at 910-232-5910. MERIT PIT BULL FOUNDATION Hi, I'm Xena! I like making friends with other pups and people. I am doing fantastic with my leash-training and love to be by your side. I'm a big girl who loves to play and snuggle. My favorite toys are squeaky toys - I love to chew them until they explode! I'm seeking a feline-free family with older kids to play with. I'm progressing nicely on my training and will patiently wait for my food and will heel by your side on leash.
