Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California Minutes of the General Meeting June 18, 2016 Location: Puppy Picnic at Niles Community Park in Fremont The meeting was called to order by President Yvonne Samuelson at 10:50 am. The following members were present: Diane Boross Karen Coombs Roxayn King Marianne Dub Kathy Coon Mark Hersman Nancy Rynewicz Kathleen McKnight Amber Friesen Brandi Friesen Deborah Marks Karen D Augusta The following board members were present: Yvonne Samuelson Rebecca Logsdon Halina Christie Kathy Rosdail Trudy Kerr Anita Rasmussen Johanna Primeaux We had the following guests: Wendy Toomey Pietro Pete Denevi Mary Metz (this is her third meeting!) Abbey Buckler Brett Buckler LeAnn Buckler Last Month s Minutes: The minutes for May 2016 were approved. President s Report: Pat Mahoney is now a lifetime member of SSCNC. Correspondence: Trudy Kerr reported that we received the following correspondence: Cards from Linda Holland and from Pat Mahoney thanking SSCNC on behalf of Northern Nevada SSC for our donations to the ASSA National raffle. Treasurer: Kathy read the financials for May 2016 and for the fiscal year end. Compared to last year, our finances kept pretty steady. We only lost $900. The raffles helped. We are still paying bank charges. This issue will be worked on. Membership: If you have any changes to your contact information in the roster, do it now. Anita plans to issue one roster a year (in June).

Breeders Referral: No report. Agility Trial: The report from Patsi Nelson The March 2017 agility trial has been cancelled because the date conflicts with the AKC Agility Nationals. This means that our Trial Secretary (Lorie Abbott) and her crew will be gone. It will be very difficult to put on a show without her. The members asked about the possibility of moving the show to another date. The local agility trial calendar is nearly full, so it is likely that there is no other weekend we can move the trial to (plus Lorie would have suggested another date if there was one available). Education: Yvonne said that she brought a 10 year old bitch for people to go over during the demo at the picnic. Bulletin: Thank you for the submissions to the June Bulletin, particularly all the brags. Rebecca said that she would love to see some dog biographies in future issues. Special Awards: If you have a dog with over 100 Best of Breeds that you would like to include on the new Century Club trophy, let Anita know by next week and she will talk to Larry. Christmas Party: We need to discuss the deadline for trophies at the Christmas Party soon. The party takes place December 3rd, so the deadline needs to be much earlier this year. October 2016 Specialty: The Specialty takes place on October 22 nd. Janet Hitt has not officially been asked to judge Juniors, but she has unofficially agreed to do so. Kathy Rosdail will ring steward. Kathy would love to have an intern. You can t ring steward and show your dog. However, you could recluse yourself from any class your dog may be in, plus have your dog shown by someone else (We need to check on the rules for this). Mary Metz may intern as ring steward. She is still deciding whether to show at the Specialty. The logistics of getting the judge back to the airport on Sunday is something we need to consider. Cathy Dupree offered to do lunch. If she can t make it because her husband needs her help, Mark Hersman may bring the lunch items. Nancy said she could help, too. February 2017 Specialty: This will be an independent specialty at Expo Hall at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. October 2017 Specialty: Marcia Bittner will be the judge. Brian Cleveland pulled out because he won t be able to use his scooter at the show (due to it being outdoors). He won t be able to judge at our February show either, due to weather concerns. Marcia actually got 3 rd place during the voting for judges in October 2015, though Yvonne DeFreitas was reported as the 3 rd place vote-getter during the meeting at the time (Yvonne S. double-checked the ballots). #1 was Brian Cleveland (who has pulled out), #2 was Amy Gau (who is judging in February 2017). Yvonne DeFreitas withdrew herself from consideration because she feared taking the assignment would hurt entries (she has another judging assignment shortly before Del Valle). Marcia does Juniors

Marcia also does other breeds (most of the herding breeds). We may be able to share her with other rings at Del Valle. Match: The Match takes place August 13 th at Niles Community Park in Fremont. The Workshop starts at 9 am and the Match starts at 10 am. Anne Baillet has indicated that she wants to help. The conformation judges are Mark Hersman and Cindy Frusetta. Patty Skinner will be the ring steward. Anne Paterson will be judging the obedience and rally workshop. We will be having Juniors at the Match. Entry is free. We need a raffle at the Match. In particular, we need help with set-up. Halina will be sending the application to the AKC by Monday. Once the application is submitted, we will put the flyer on the website (technically, we can t post the flyer any earlier than that). Johanna has not had much luck getting people to tell her what they are bringing to the potluck. Election of Officers: The following members were voted in as SSCNC officers and board members for 2016-2017: President Vice President Treasurer Corresponding Secretary Recording Secretary Sergeant at Arms Director Director Director Director Johanna Primeaux Halina Christie Kathy Rosdail Trudy Kerr Rebecca Logsdon Tom True Mark Hersman Anita Rasmussen Lynn Azzopardi Yvonne Samuelson Per the Bylaws, the immediate Past President is automatically on the Board as one of the 4 Directors. New Business: List of Motions: Kathy Coon suggested developing and maintaining a list of all motions made over the years, so that they could be referred to. As the system now stands, no one remembers what motions were made and when. The members thought this was a good idea. Kathy made a motion: Going forward, we will formulate a system to record motions and whether they passed or failed. The motion was seconded and approved by the membership. Halina will make a spreadsheet, working from the Bulletins. Be patient, however: it will take some time to compile. Juniors Trophy: Now that we have Juniors competing again, Debbie Marks said that we need to add the Best Junior award back to the trophies list. The members agreed and discussed the amount to set for the trophy (it can t be more than $45, which is the amount for Best of Breed). Debbie made a motion to set $35 for the Best Juniors trophy. The motion was seconded and approved by the membership. Anita

said that members can throw in a little extra money on their own to get something special. Debbie suggested a nice brush from Triumph Shelties or a tote filled with supplies. Good of the Order: None. Next Meetings: July 2 nd at the SSCNC Agility Trial, Evergreen Valley College, San Jose. August 13 th at the Match, Niles Community Park, Fremont. Adjourned: 12:09 pm (by new President Johanna Primeaux) Submitted by: Rebecca Logsdon, SSCNC Secretary Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California

Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California Minutes of the General Meeting July 2, 2016 Location: SSCNC Agility Trial at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose The meeting was called to order by President Johanna Primeaux at 5:50 am. The following members were present: Barbara Norton Nancy Rynewicz Scott Zamvil Rachael Shaffer Gail Shattuck Patsi Nelson The following board members were present: Johanna Primeaux Rebecca Logsdon Trudy Kerr Lynn Azzopardi We had the following guests: Bonnie Edwards John Strassner Last Month s Minutes: There were two corrections to the June minutes: 1. The Conformation Match starts at 10 am; the Obedience & Rally Workshop starts at 9 am; 2. The judge at the Obedience & Rally Workshop is Anne Paterson. Otherwise, the minutes were approved. President s Report: Johanna thanked everyone for voting for her and thanked Yvonne Samuelson for her 7 years of hard work as president. Correspondence: Trudy Kerr reported that we haven t received anything new since the June meeting. Treasurer: Kathy Rosdail submitted her report via email: o She checked with Citibank (this is where the Club currently has its bank accounts). Because of our small account balances, we now qualify for the newer small business requirements. As long as the combined account balance meets the $5,000 minimum, we will no longer be charged monthly service fees. We will still be charged $12 if there is a bad check (this amount is reimbursed to the Club by the person with the bad check). o She hasn t received the monthly bank statement yet. It s too early in the month. She will present the July and August reports at the August meeting. Johanna said that we should put someone else on the bank account besides Kathy R., just in case something happens to her. Johanna asked to be put on the account. Trudy said that she has the key to Kathy s house and that she knows where the Club documents are.

Membership: Mary Metz has submitted an application for membership. The application will be voted on during the August meeting. Breeders Referral: No report. Agility Trial: Patsi Nelson reported that we had a very small entry for our agility trial due to a huge USDAA trial in Prunedale the same weekend. It was a two judge trial originally, but we had to drop one judge because there were less than 330 entries per day. The judge dropped from the trial was Kera Holm. She is retiring from judging due to family issues. This would have been her last judging assignment. The Club gave her a sheltie-embroidered towel set as a retirement gift (thank you to Debbie Marks for the embroidery). Patsi said that we will be lucky to break even this weekend. Unfortunately, we don t make the money we should at our agility trials because we don t have enough members working the trial. This means that we have to hire a crew to work the trial and build the courses. The SacValley Club makes a lot more money than we do at their agility trial because most of their members work the trial, even those in conformation (Patty Skinner works every trial). Unfortunately, several members who do agility have left the Club in recent years. Instead of buying entry gifts for the participants at the agility trial, we paid for parking. The fee was included in the payment for the facility. The members discussed ways to generate more Club interest in agility and get more members to help. The agility trials have generated a lot of money for the Club over the years, but there is a feeling amongst members who do agility that their contributions are not being valued or are being taken for granted. SSCNC is sponsoring one day of the Hot August Night agility trial in August. We decided not to have a trial in March 2017 because it coincides with the AKC Agility Nationals, which means we would not have a Trial Secretary. Education: Yvonne is the new Education Chair. The members generally discussed topics for a seminar. Patsi said that ASSA will donate money to support a seminar. Bulletin: Rebecca said that brags and any other submission to the Bulletin should be sent to the Bulletin email: sscnc.bulletin@gmail.com. If you use her home or work addresses, there is chance that your email will be buried. Also, do not use her old work address (rlogsdon@zacklerlaw.com). It still works, for now, but it is likely to be shut down sometime within in the next few months. Ways and Means: No report. Trophies: No report. Special Awards: No report. Match: The Match takes place August 13 th at Niles Community Park in Fremont. The Workshop starts at 9 am (Rally is first) and the Match starts at 10 am. Flyers/entry forms are available. Patsi is the Obedience/Rally Chair (Nancy Rynewicz was originally Rally Chair her grandson is getting married the same day as the Match. Congrats!).

The conformation judges are Mark Hersman and Cindy Frusetta. Anne Paterson will be judging the obedience and rally workshop. Johanna will be doing the lunch. Please email to her what you are bringing so we can be sure that people aren t bringing the same thing. About 3 days before the Match, she will make a list of what people are bringing to the potluck October 2016 Specialty: The Specialty takes place on October 22 nd. Nancy said that we have two judges flying in. We don t know the schedule yet. Kathy Dupree will do the lunch. There is a chance that she won t be able to go to the Specialty (her husband is waiting for a transplant); if she can t go, Mark Hersman will bring the food. We will need volunteers to set up the lunch. The lunch is just for judges and stewards. The break at Del Valle is too tight to have a pot luck. Via email, Kathy R. reported on her research regarding the stewards issue: Per the AKC rules and regs for dog shows, chapter 19: no person should serve as steward with a judge under whom he has an entry, or under whom, in the course of the day s judging, such entry may become eligible to compete. So this answers the question brought up at the June meeting regarding the possibility of stewarding when your dog is entered under that judge. Old Business: Judges Bios: Yvonne will prepare biographies of all the judges chosen by the Judges Committee, so members can review and consider before voting. New Business: Publicity: The Club has been without a Publicity Chair for a long time. We could use one. Hospitality at the Meetings: Johanna noted that members used to bring goodies to the meetings. Who was going to bring the goodies was usually decided at the previous meeting. Maybe we should reinstitute this tradition. September Meeting: Where should we have the September Club meeting? The members enjoy the meetings at Round Table Pizza. Instead of the Club paying for the pizza, it was suggested that the members at the meeting contribute $5 each and buy their own drinks. We just need a date. [After the meeting Johanna and Rebecca reviewed the Trial calendar and concurred that there were no open dates for a pizza party. The meeting will be likely take place Saturday, Sept. 17 th at the Sir Francis Drake KC Show at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo). Good of the Order: None. Next Meetings: August 13 th at the Match, Niles Community Park, Fremont. TBA Probably September 17 th at the Sir Francis Drake KC show in Vallejo. Adjourned: 6:35 pm Submitted by: Rebecca Logsdon, SSCNC Secretary Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California

7-8-2016 President s Message SSCNC Club Members, first off I want to thank-you all for voting for me as your newest President. Such an honor indeed and I hope I will be able fulfill this service to the fullest. Secondly, I wish to congratulate all those that stepped up and are our new cabinet members and to the old that are still in positions. Volunteers really make this club be a mighty club. YOU are Special. Thank-You! And lastly, I want to thank Yvonne Samuelson for her endurance serving as our past President for 7 years! We would not have been a club without her volunteering every year. I just hope I will do as good a job as she has done. I believe our club is a great club as I have seen it prosper since 1971 when I became a member, 45 years ago. I do hope to bring in some new ideas to further this club so that we all can enjoy our club even more so. A fun club. The idea of meeting at the Pizza place will continue, and the puppy picnic will also continue. Our 2 AKC Specialty shows in February & October, 2 agility trials and the Puppy Match are our highlights for the year as is our Awards Christmas Club Dinner. The club s last meeting at the SSCNC club s agility trail in San Jose was my first to preside. It was a delight to see some of the dogs perform there on the beautiful green grass of the college grounds. I highly recommend to the conformation people to pack a lunch and come watch and maybe bring a dog to train. I would like to recommend giving to all your newly acquired puppy people information to attend these trials and then maybe join our club. Information is knowledge, so my suggestion is to give these people a show schedule along with the other paraphernalia given. Without further ado. Onward and upward~ Sincerely, Johanna Primeaux
