Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California Minutes of the General Meeting October 17, 2015 Location: Alameda County Fairgrounds (Pleasanton) at the SSCNC Specialty. The meeting was called to order by President Yvonne Samuelson at 4:45 pm. The following members were present: Ann Balliet Nancy Rynewicz Roxayn King Gail Shattuck Lynn Azzopardi Rachel Shaffer Cathy Dupree Brandi Friesen Amber Friesen Deborah Marks Linda Bianco Donna Shade Diane Boross Marianne Dub Kathy Brown Karen L. Coombs Kathy Coon Thomas True Mark Hersman Kathleen McKnight The following board members were present: Yvonne Samuelson Rebecca Logsdon Halina Christie Sharon Sampson Johanna Primeaux Trudy Kerr Kathy Rosdail We had the following guests: Reg Shaffer Liz Zuniga Rick Thompson Kim Strassner Julie Guttman Last Month s Minutes: No report. President s Report: Yvonne personally thanked everyone who helped put on the Specialty. Correspondence: Trudy Kerr reported that we received the following correspondence: A thank you card from Alvin Eng (our Rally/Obedience Judge at the Specialty). A notice from the AKC closing out our June Agility Trial. A notice from the AKC approving our February Specialty. Treasurer: Kathy Rosdail read out the Club financials for August and September. We made money on our Match, thanks to the excellent Raffle and the addition of an Obedience/Rally Workshop.

We also made a nice profit on the Agility Trial. Membership: No report. Breeders Referral: Kathy Coon said that there are a lot of buyers out there right now. We need puppies listed on the site. You can also list older dogs. Trophies: Debbie Marks passed around the February trophy list. The list of available trophies for February is small because it is a designated specialty. Special Awards: The deadline to submit a request for a title plaque is October 21 st. Larry Obermiller, who makes our plaques, wants to get started early. Send conformation titles to Johanna Primeaux and performance titles to Lynn Azzopardi. The form can be emailed. Make sure that you get a confirmation email from Lynn or Johanna (there is always a chance that your email may end up in a spam folder). The deadline to return Challenge Trophies to Johanna is December 1 st. Mark Hersman is sponsoring a new Challenge Trophy for dogs who have achieved a ROM. If you have an idea for a Challenge Trophy that you would like to sponsor, please let Johanna know. They are lots of fun. Ways and Means: We need someone to take charge of the raffles. There s really not a lot of work involved. Raffles do a lot for the Club. Let Yvonne know if you are interested. Education: Johanna attended the Estate Planning for Pet Owners and Breeders seminar at the Two Cities KC show. The seminar was given by Miles McCoy and Stephen Fatula of McCoy Fatula LLP (family law & estate planning law firm from Roseville - http://www.mccoyfatula.com). Ann Baillet attended the seminar, too. Johanna and Ann both said that they learned a lot from the seminar. For example: o o o o o When you leave instructions in your will bequeathing your dog or dogs to Person A, make sure that this is OK with Person A first. If you leave your dog to them and they do not want the dog, it may not end well. It is a good idea to list a runner-up to Person A, in case they are unable to take your dog. Leave a list of your dogs medications Leave money for your dogs care (this is a good incentive). Put together a trust benefiting your dog. Then get life insurance on yourself, making the trust a beneficiary. Johanna said that she talked to Rose Chandless. She would love to come and do a handling seminar. She wouldn t charge for a hotel and would pay her own airfare. We need to check the Club schedule to see when we could hold the seminar. January is a possibility other than the Golden Gate KC show at the Cow Palace, it is a dead month. We may be able to do it at Happiness Kennel. It would be for other breeds, too, not just Shelties. This will increase the attendance at the seminar. Johanna will talk to Rose. Website: No report.

October 2015 Specialty: It s a wrap! It takes so many people to put the show together. Thank you to: o Our Conformation judges Rick Thompson (Regular classes) and Debbie Majewski (Sweeps). Rick was very appreciative. He loved working our show. We took good care of him. o Anita Rasmussen (Show Chair) o Halina Christie (Show Secretary). o Kathy Rosdail (Assistant Show Chair). Kathy took care of things the day of the show because Anita was expecting a litter of puppies. o Our Obedience/Rally judge, Alvin Eng. o Nancy Rynewicz (Rally Chair) o Marianne Dub (Obedience Chair). o Our Obedience/Rally stewards, including Ellen Fletcher o Our Conformation steward, Diane Boross. It was her first time stewarding she did a wonderful job. o Cathy Dupree and Kathy Brown for the Judge s lunch. o Mark Hersman for the ribbons. o Trudy Kerr, for getting the information out to the Club members. o Debbie Marks and Amber Friesen for the trophies. They were all embroidered by Debbie awesome. o Gale Ann Morris for the rescue raffle fabulous as always. o Everyone who helped with setup on Friday (and who will be helping with the tear down today). Sharon Sampson said that the grass in the conformation ring was too long. A lot of dogs were hopping around, trying to maneuver through the ring. The grass in the Obedience/Rally ring was much nicer. Next year, we should ask the Fairgrounds to mow the grass prior to the show. February 2016 Specialty: The February show is a designated specialty. It will be held on Sunday of the Santa Clara KC show (Feb. 21 st ). The judge will be Melanie Williams. We will be doing the show as a designated specialty because we had trouble getting a show chair. Kathy R. added that Santa Clara KC doesn t know how to do concurrent specialties. We will pay for the rosettes. Any money made on this Specialty will go to MB-F. We will need to have a raffle to offset the loss in income. February 2017 Specialty: Due to a variety of factors (Santa Clara KC moving its All Breed Show to Saturday/Sunday, the Santa Clara Co. Fairgrounds pushing dog clubs off of the site, etc.), it is likely that we will need to make different arrangements regarding our Feb. 2017 Specialty. Some ideas include: Going together with the Collie Club and doing a Specialty with them, possibly in Vallejo. Doing a back to back Specialty on the Friday before the Santa Clara KC show (the traffic would be terrible) Joining Sacramento Valley SSC and Northern Nevada SSC in Dixon. The Board needs to get together to discuss this. It is a very big topic that requires a lot of thought. Unfinished Business: No report.

New Business: No report Selection of Conformation / Sweeps Judges for February 2017 and October 2017 Specialties: Yvonne presented the slate of conformation and sweeps judges nominated for the February 2017 and October 2017 Specialties. Only members in good standing can vote. If our first choice for judge is unavailable, we will ask the next name on the list. In order to vote, members must be present at the meeting. If they aren t at the meeting, they can t vote. The membership voted as follows: Conformation: #1 Brian Cleveland #2 Amy Gau #3 Yvonne DeFreitas Sweeps: #1 Pam Strametz #2 Kathy McFall #3 Melinda Sonnenberg Good of the Order: None. Next Meetings: November 21 or 22 at one of the Turkey Circuit Shows. December 5 th at the Holiday Party at Cattleman s in Livermore Adjourned: 5:55 pm Submitted by: Rebecca Logsdon, SSCNC Secretary Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California
