May 2012 Issue No: 67 newsletter@mudtc.org.au MUDTC Newsletter STOP PRESS NO DOG TRAINING CLASSES ON SUNDAY 20 MAY 2012 Reminder! Rotary Swap Meeting at the Showground Sunday 27 May. Attendants at the gate collecting an entry fee, so advise you are with Dog Training to gain free entry, or pay the entry fee if you wish to attend the Swap Meet after dog training President s Message Hello members Another action packed month for our Club: we were certainly kept busy with the Relay for Life, Rally O, Fun Agility & Jumping Competition and the first of our Margaret & Tessa Rudd Agility Competitions. Congratulations to all our winners! I hope you have also been kept busy working with your dogs at home during the week, practising the training tips from Sunday classes. As we previously reported, Relay for Life was also a great success - thank you for all those who helped raise the $177 we were able to contribute to the cause. I'm sure that next year will see many more of you involved in this very worthy cause. As we all know Milton weather is a fickle thing - while many people experienced a dry but windy Sunday recently, at Milton showground we were running the Agility Competition in driving horizontal rain. We have to make the decision before 8 am to cancel or continue with training, and so the conditions at 9am may not always reflect the earlier weather. We therefore appreciate your understanding if we don't always get it right. So, if the weather is doubtful, check your email or local radio station before heading into dog club. Club Instructors will be holding regular meetings to discuss training progress and methods across all classes in the Club. The first was held last Sunday when some very productive discussion was held. I welcome the return of Liz Karacsonyi and Rick Venning as Club Instructors, and new Assistant Instructors Rosemary Rixon, Danielle Butson and Ruth Hall. I would like to personally thank all our Instructors for the time and dedication they give to our Club. One "housekeeping" decision made at the meeting is that the Club will return to an earlier system of recording your Class promotion progress by adding a coloured sticker to member name badges. It's a wonderful way to recognise the achievements you've made as you progress through the stages of training. Another reason to always wear your name badge in Class! I would like to apologise to members (and particularly those in my Basic class) for my recent frequent absences. I occasionally have to work on a Sunday, and am involved in endurance sports which often also involve weekends in the cooler months as well. I would like to thank Diane and the other instructors who fill in for me in class, and Vice President Rosie

MUDTC Newsletter Page 2 of 5 STOP PRESS Our Club recently successfully applied for a $1000 donation from the Veolia Mulwaree Trust. This money will be used to pay for the fencing of the new puppy enclosure. Grateful thanks to all Committee members involved in preparing the application. Pictures of our newest puppy, Jenny Patch s Pippa who is a tiny little friend for Billy the Blue Heeler who fills in for me in meetings. It gives our members a wonderful opportunity to experience different styles of teaching and the opportunity to learn different things from different people. As we all know, dogs as well as people will learn at different rates, and experiencing different opportunities early allows you and your dog to learn from a range of experiences. This year's RSPCA Million Paws Walk is on Sunday 20 May at the Nowra Showground. There is no local walk this year. As an important fund raiser for the RSPCA we encourage everyone to support this annual event and so training is cancelled on Sunday 20 May as we know many of you will want to take part. The Nowra RSPCA Million Paws Walk is a fun day out for families and people of all ages and is an opportunity for the Nowra RSPCA Shelter & Volunteer Branch to raise vital funds for the RSPCA and to promote responsible pet ownership. Aside from a fun-filled day out with two and four legged friends, you will enjoy: Food and Beverage Stalls and Displays Novelty Events Competitions and Raffles Lucky Entry Prize Count the Kibble Competition The walk is located at the Nowra showground with parking available at the showground and in surrounding streets. The walk is an easy 3 km long and registrations open at 8:30 am. It's a wonderful way to get out into a new environment with your dog, while raising funds for this very worthy cause. Jump onto the website for information: http://nsw.millionpaw swalk.com.au/ Until then, Happy Training! President Natalie You Tube In the next few weeks you will be able to watch our Club demonstration team s performance on YouTube. We noticed that several Dog Clubs have posted videos of their demos and this is a good way to share ideas. Rick contacted Tony Mann, whose late wife Marion was a member of our Demo team a few years ago. Tony is fantastic on the camera and so we are looking forward to seeing the video clip and thank Tony and his colleague Geoff very much for giving us their time and expertise. Dog Club Library Did you know our Club has books and DVDs available for Club members to borrow? The list is on our Web Site at http://www.mudtc.org.au/docume nts/library%20list.pdf and since completion of the list, we have received a generous donation of books and DVDs from past President Peter Hudson, particularly related to Clicker training.

MUDTC Newsletter Page 3 of 5 Photos courtesy Beth Venning On Saturday afternoon 31st March, in spite of the heat and the long delay before performing, the dogs and handlers went through a varied routine that was very much appreciated by the many onlookers at the Relay for Life. Highlights were the weaving between the dogs, the wheeling, the spiral that brought handlers and dogs into a tight circle and the finale with all the dogs sitting together on a set of tables while the handlers circled around them. Aspects of obedience training taught at the Dog Club were interwoven throughout the routine. Following the Obedience Demonstration, the dogs then performed a series of Agility manoeuvres, with dogs of all sizes taking part, from tiny Papillion Mikki to Rottweiler Busta; and all working together to make for a delightful display. Our Club s Championship winning Flyball team, 'Mudd on the Paws', gave a dazzling exhibition of Flyball, followed by a breathtaking display of Pole Weaving. Rosie s Border Collie, Wizz, one of the fastest dogs in Australia, amazed everyone weaving through 36 weave poles in a matter of seconds. At the conclusion of the display, the Demonstration Team returned to the arena and, wearing purple and yellow bandanas and holding purple and yellow flags, dogs and handlers took part in their version of the Relay for Life. This was wonderful to see and was extremely well received by the audience. On the Tuesday following the Relay For Life, members of the Demonstration Team made their monthly visit to Sarah Claydon where the dogs again brought delight to the residents as they mingled with them, did tricks and provided a small measure of companionship in the time they were there. Article by Rick Venning If any Club member would like to join our Demonstration teams please talk to Rick, Diane or your Class Instructor at Sunday training.
