CARLES-TOLRÁ Avda. Príncipe de Asturias 30, ático 1; E-08012 Barcelona; España; E-mail: diptera@outlook.com Abstract A new species of the ulidid genus Otites Latreille, 1804 named O. pagolacartei sp. n., is described from northern Spain. It was collected in a holm oak forest by means of wine-beer traps. According to the shape of the male genitalia it is very similar to O. guttata (Meigen, 1830) and O. centralis (Fabricius, 1805). Key words: Diptera, Ulidiidae, Otitinae, Otites pagolacartei sp. n., Spain. Laburpena Otites pagolacartei sp. n.: ulididoen espezie berria, Espainiakoa (Diptera: Ulidiidae: Otitinae) Otites Latreille, 1804 generoko espezie berri bat, O. pagolacartei sp. n. izenekoa eta Espainiaren iparraldekoa, deskribatzen da. Artadi batean harrapatu zen, ardo eta garagardozko tranpak erabilita. Arren genitaliaren formaren arabera O. guttata (Meigen, 1830) eta O. centralis (Fabricius, 1805) espezieen antzeko samarra da. Introduction Recently, Carles-Tolrá and Pagola Carte (2013) published a paper on some dipterans collected in the canopy of a Cantabrian holm oak forest from the Basque Country (Spain). Traps with a mixture of red wine and beer as bait were used. Among that material some specimens of Otites Latreille, 1804, that couldn t be identified, were collected. For more details see Carles-Tolrá and Pagola Carte (2013). Such specimens of Otites belong to a new species for science and it is described in this paper. Otites is an Holarctic genus that includes 27 species in the Palaearctic Region (Greve, 1998), 22 of which are known to occur in Europe. In Spain (and the Iberian Peninsula) it is represented by 6 species (Carles- Tolrá and Báez, 2002).

110 CARLES-TOLRÁ: Otites pagolacartei sp. n. (Diptera: Ulidiidae) Results Otites pagolacartei sp. n. (Figs. 1-3) Male (Figs. 1a-b): Head (Figs. 1c-e) mainly orangish. Face, lunula, frontal triangle, parafacialia, gena and postgena orangish. Frons orangish, clearer anteriorly, covered uniformly with short hairs and distinctly divergent anteriorly. Fronto-orbital plates brownish. Ocellar tubercle and vertex dark brown. Occiput (upper part) dark brown to brown. Carina protruding, antennal groves distinct. Parafacialia bare. Gena with short hairs only and brownish just below the eye. Antenna orangish, joint 3 short, rounded apically, arista orangish, micropubescent. Eye long elliptic, oblique. Height of eye : genal height = 2.1. Palpi orangish. Chaetotaxy: 2 orbitals (anterior shorter), inner vertical, outer vertical, postvertical, ocellar. Thorax (Figs. 1a-b) dark, grey dusted. Mesonotum blackish, grey dusted, with numerous black spots on the setae; with 3 illdefined, grey, longitudinal stripes. Scutellum dark brown, grey dusted. Postpronotum, notopleuron and postalar callus brown. Pleurae brown, grey dusted. Anepisternum haired, with a posterior row of bristles. Katepisternum haired, with 1 posterior bristle at the upper corner. Chaetotaxy: 1 postpronotal, 2 notopleurals, 1 supraalar, 2 postalars, 1 prescutellar, 0+2 dorsocentrals (posterior one more external), 2 scutellars. Legs orangish, tarsi darker apically. Wing (Fig. 1f) patterned. R1 haired dorsally in its apical part. Haltere whitish. Abdomen (Figs. 1a-b) dark brown, terguites 2-4 with grey tomentose anteriorly, postabdomen brown. Genitalia (Figs. 2a-d, 3a): epandrium dark brown, haired. Inner surstyli yellow, curved, convergent, without teeth. Outer surstyli brown, triangular, divergent, full of short black brown teeth. Phallus very long, rolled. Cerci short, rounded, haired, ventral hairs longer. (For the nomenclature the paper by Kameneva (1996) has been followed.) Female as the male. Cerci (Figs. 3b-c) with 4 pairs of short hairs (1 dorsal, 1 dorsoapical, 1 ventroapical and 1 ventral). Type material (193 %% and 224 &&): HOLOTYPE % : Spain: Guipúzcoa: Ataun: Urkillaga (Aralar Parke Naturala), 23.5.-1.6.2012, wine-beer trap, Quercus ilex ilex forest, 614 m, 30TWN6858, S. Pagola Carte leg. PARATYPES: same data as the holotype, 180 %% and 210 &&; same data as the holotype, but 1-14.6.2012, 12 %% and 14 &&. Type material preserved in alcohol (70º). Holotype and 180 %% and 210 && paratypes deposited in the author s collection, 12 %% and 14 && paratypes deposited in the collector s collection. Other material (not types): Same data as the holotype, but 14-26.6.2012, 4 %% and 5 &&, deposited in the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine. Discussion: Following the key by Hennig (1939), Otites pagolacartei sp. n. keys out to O. maculipennis (Olivier in Latreille, 1811), from which it differs by the genitalia and wing pattern (cf. Rivosecchi, 1995: fig. 11). Nevertheless, according to the shape of the male genitalia, O. pagolacartei sp. n. is very similar to O. guttata (Meigen, 1830) and O. centralis (Fabricius, 1805), but they clearly differ by the genitalia, as well as by external morphological characters (e.g. number of dorsocentrals and wing pattern) (cf. Hennig, 1939: figs. 9, 11; Merz, 1996: figs. 1, 2, 8-11; Rivosecchi, 1995: fig. 14, not fig. 12, note the mistake). Biology: Unknown. The specimens were collected in the canopy of a Cantabrian holm oak forest with traps with a mixture of red wine and beer as bait. Distribution: Hitherto only known from the type locality (northern Spain, Basque Country). Etymology: It is a pleasure to dedicate this new species to the collector. Total body length (mm): 6.2-10.1 (%%), 6.5-10.3 (&&); wings (mm): 5.5-8.2 (%%), 6.1-8.8 (&&).
