4-H Online Deadline Approaches 4-H Re-enrollment began on September 1st. Please remember to re-enroll for the new 4-H year. The deadline to re-enroll will be December 1st. After that time you will not receive the 4-H newsletter if you have not re-enrolled. Clover Kids Section New to our newsletter this month and the following months will be a Clover Kids section. This will highlight information specific for Clover Kids going on that month or upcoming months. If we have nothing upcoming we will feature ideas/ crafts to do either at your upcoming meeting or at home with your Clover Kid!! Check it out on the next page!! Crime Scene Investigation Camp 4th-8th graders: Want to learn about Law Enforcement? Lee County 4-H is partnering with Lee County Sheriff s Office to show you what it is like to be in Law Enforcement. It will be a 1 1/2 hour class on Wednesdays for 3 weeks looking into the inner workings of the Lee County Detectives. It will be held on Wednesdays in December from 2-3:30. December 5th, 12th and 19th are the days. It will be at the Lee County Sherriff s Office in Montrose, Iowa. STEM Lit to Go! Super Sled Who: K-5th Graders When: December 26th from 1-2PM Where: Fort Madison Public Library What: We are going over how motion works. Come join us for a winter edition of STEM Lit to Go! We will be talking about sleds and how they go and how to get them to go faster. This is a free program at the Fort Madison Library. Hope to see you there! From the Desk of the CYC: It s December!! Fun Activity Beaded Candy Cane Ornaments You will need: -1 package (25 pc.) green chenille pipe cleaners, 12 x 6mm -1 package pony beads red, 6 9 mm -1 package pony beads white, 6 9 mm How to: -Use wire cutters or old scissors to cut the pipe cleaners in half. -Slide one bead to the end of a pipe cleaner, turning the end around the bead to keep it in place. Alternate red and white beads until the pipe cleaner is full. -Turn the end around the last bead. Bend into a candy cane shape and hang on your tree. -The candy cane may also be used as a package decoration. 3
Beef Weigh-in 2019 Lee County Fair Dates: July 10-15 Market Beef Weigh-in will take place on Saturday, December 1st at the Lee County Fairgrounds. Calves should arrive from 9:00 am to 10:30 am for weigh-in & retinal imaging. Tags will be $2.00 a head and retinal images will be $10.00 a head. Lee County Multi-Species Share-A-Calf Pick-Up will start at 10:30 am. All County and State Fair market beef animals will need to be verified in 4-HOnline by February 1, 2019. There are no exceptions to this rule. 2019 DOG OBEDIENCE CLASSES Dog Obedience classes will be formatted differently this year. We plan on meeting 2 times a month starting in February and ending in June. The first 3-4 session will be conducted without dogs and be held inside at the Lee County Extension Office in Donnellson. If you intend on showing a dog at the Lee County Fair you must sign -up by calling the Extension Office at (319) 835-5116 so we can send you a schedule and packet in the mail. Tentative Class Dates: Feb. 3rd and 17th Fitting and Showmanship Clinic New this year will be a Livestock Fitting and Showmanship Clinic! The Clinic will be on Sunday, June 9th at 5:30 PM. This is open to all Lee County 4-H Members!! Species to be covered: Beef, Swine, Sheep, Meat Goats, Poultry & Rabbits. It will be held at the Lee County Fairgrounds! More details to come!!! Keep an eye out for our NEW MEMBER PACKETS!! Within this packet is be a livestock section. We have created a check-list of deadlines and expectations for each species! These check-lists are beneficial for everyone, not just new members. We encourage you to look over this. New Leadership Opportunity Livestock Judging Coaches Clinic: We are seeking 4-H members who are 8th through 12th grade that are interested in becoming part of the Lee County Fair Livestock and Art Hall committees. Livestock committees consist of beef, sheep, swine, small pet, dog, meat goats, and horse. We would like 1 youth representative for each species. If you would like to be on one of these committees for the 2019 Lee County Fair please contact the Extension Office at 319-835-5116 to sign-up. This is a great opportunity to learn about the interworking's of the committees and help advocate for youth. All applicants must sign-up by January 15th. The Department of Animal Science will be offering a clinic for adults who would like to learn more about how to coach a livestock judging team. The event will be held on April 20, 2019 at Iowa State University. Participants will receive hands-on instruction from the ISU livestock judging coach and team. The week of January 20th we will do 5 10 minute phone interviews with all members who are interested. Don t miss out on becoming a leader in Lee County. 2019 Equine Extravaganza will be held Congratulations 4-H Livestock Exhibitors! The Lee County 4-H Program has raised enough money to cover the on March 22-24.This is held at Ellsworth Community YQCA fees for 2019. The Extension Office will be purchasing YQCA coupons and delivering them to your 4-H leaders in College in Iowa Falls. It isn t too soon to start gathering a team! January.
