President s Message Spring! The cold is gone, the snow is gone. The mud will soon be gone. Time to start looking forward to all of the events that PVKC has planned - the All Breed Show, The Farm Dog Trial, The Health Clinic, etc, etc. PVKC is a very active club, participating in so many varied activities there is something for everyone. However, we can t continue to put on these events without the assistance of our club members. Please take time to volunteer. If you want to participate in the All Breed show, then help out at the Farm Dog Trial. A list of our events can be found on the calendar at our website (and on page 8 or this newsletter). Contact the event Chairperson and offer your assistance, there are many jobs that require little knowledge of the event, but are critical to the success of the event. We are also looking for a new club Secretary, a Program Chairperson, a Trophy Chairperson, and an Awards Chairperson. Please let me know if you might be interested in any of these positions. Get out and enjoy the Spring with your best friend! Sam Newton Once upon a time, some 10 or 11 years ago, Sam Newton turned the editor job of this newsletter over to me. What I remember best, besides being loved up by multiple gorgeous cats, was her willingness to suspend her grave doubts that I a brand new PVKC member could pull this off with the same ease and confidence that she handled the job. Of course, in many ways, she was right to have doubts in those days Sam was at the center of all things communications for PVKC. She did the newsletter and she set up our very first website (back when that was hard to do). She knew every one, every event, and every nuance of all the behind the scenes action. Luckily for me, she stuck by me and eventually, I do think, she convinced herself I could carry on. In recent years Sam was forced to take a fairly restricted role in PVKC events. But I do remember her smiling face with our Show trophies at many shows and I know the tracking folks owe many food events to her organizing grace. Despite many physical restrictions, Sam simply got on with what needed doing. She did all she could for as long as she could. Her RA and its complications were never an excuse to avoid helping out this club in any way she could. Dorianne Almann summed it up nicely I first met Sam in 2004 at any rate, that's the date on the oldest paperwork I have on file with her name on it when I joined the club. Sam was so welcoming to me one who, up until that time, had had pet, not competition, dogs. Her dry wit, sly sense of humor, and matter-of-fact approach were fun. Her energy was inspiring. Her grace under trying circumstances was admirable. If you are new to PVKC and did not know Sam I am sorry. Because you really did miss knowing a strong, lovely woman who was a serious credit to the everyday world of dogs (and cats!). And, I can not believe than in my huge photo storage I am unable to find a decent picture to publish. But I do have a picture of Chewy tracking and that may be the best summary of all. Chewy tracking (and titling in the sport) amazing! First, let me thank you all for your support, friendship, and love to my wife and to me. Sam was a fighter... never complaining and always trying to do what she had set out to accomplish. Her arthritis was just a small challenge to her. She had over come setbacks in the past, but no medical miracles could help this time. Sam was admitted to the hospital on Thursday, January 4 th and succumbed to complications on January 11 th. Sam loved cats and dogs often fostering tiny kittens from local animal shelters. Having show dogs, over the years, was a real love. And she enjoyed being a member of the Pioneer Valley Kennel Club. Let me conclude by saying I could not have asked for a better 50 years of marriage and 5 years of dating. I will truly miss her until we meet again. -4-
