This thesis revlves arund my bservatin f the last 18 years n the life f stray and cmmunity dgs (Living, eating, sleeping, behaviral, scializing & signaling patterns) with varius animal & humans grups cncluded by the current situatin f strays in India, my prject n it with the intent t humbly cntribute cnstructively t this cause & animal laws in India that every India citizen needs t be aware f. The statistics presented in this thesis is based n a sample size f 200 dgs we interact with currently (nt withstanding ur pleasant expsure t ver 700 + f them). While the stats may nt be accurate t the dt & T, it may be viewed as an illustrative guidance fr thse wh d like t gain insight int the life f strays. The statistics is nt meant t add up t a 100% and needs t be viewed fr guidance n behaviral and emtinal ratis within each cmmunity grup. I d like t start with intrducing urselves. WHO WE ARE - THE BIRTH OF CAREWEL Canine Rehabilitatin & Welfare Trust CAREWEL (Funded In the year 2006) has been invlved with the rescue, welfare and adptin f stray dgs in Bangalre, Karnataka, India- since 1999 and wrking in tandem with ther well established NGO s (Nn-gvernment rganizatin) CAREWEL has had ver 700 stray puppies rescued, lked after and placed in adptive hmes. The rganizatin takes care f abut 200 Stray dgs in the area feeding and tending, with the help f 72% f the earnings f a family member and genersity f kind hearted spirits. The strays have been neutered/ spayed, and have been vaccinated against rabies. THE VACCINATION PROCESS IS REPEATED ANNUALLY. In additin t the abve, CAREWEL als believes in prviding a new lease f life t under privileged children by funding their educatin, study materials, schling requirements and free tutrials. There are 10 children registered in this prgram by far. In the year 2006, CAREWEL was funded by Mrs Sarj Iyengar & Mr Muralidharan Iyengar alng with ther TRUSTEES in rder t serve the strays cause better. The peratins is run frm their Hme currently by Mrs Sarj Iyengar & Ms SaiPrasanna Iyengar. Histry f Mngrels A mngrel r mixed-breed dg, is a dg that des nt belng t ne recgnized breed and is nt the result f intentinal breeding. Estimates place their numbers at 150 millin animals wrldwide. Althugh the term "mixed-breed dg" is preferred by sme, many mngrels have n knwn purebred ancestrs. Furthermre, crssbreed dgs, while literally a mix f breeds, differ frm mngrels in being intentinally bred. Althugh mngrels have at times been cnsidered smehw lesser than intentinally bred dgs, they tend t be less susceptible t genetic health prblems assciated with dg breeding, and have enthusiasts and defenders wh prefer them t intentinally bred dgs. Althugh mngrels exhibit great variatin, generatins f uncntrlled breeding and envirnmental pressures may tend t shape them tward certain general average bdy types and characteristics knwn as landraces, sme f which may be develped by peple int new breeds such as the Alaskan husky. At ther times, the wrd "mngrel" has been applied t infrmally purpse-bred dgs such as curs which were created at least in part frm mngrels, especially if the breed is nt fficially recgnized. ** In this Thesis, mngrels will be referred t as cmmunity dgs fr easier assciatin with stray dgs wh live in streets amng cmmunities. There are sme pure bred strays wh are nt lked after by any cmmunity & this thesis is applicable t bth categries. Cmmunity Dgs can be divided rughly int tw types

Mixes that shw characteristics f tw r mre breeds. A mix might have sme purebred ancestrs, r might cme frm a lng line f mixed-breeds. These dgs are usually identified by the breed they mst resemble, such as a "Lab mix" r "Cllie-Shepherd", even if their ancestry is unknwn. The generic pariah dg, r feral Canis lupus familiaris, where nn-selective breeding has ccurred ver many generatins. The term riginally referred t the wild dgs f India, but nw refers t dgs belnging t r descended frm a ppulatin f wild r feral dgs. The Canaan Dg is an example f a recgnized breed with pariah ancestry. Pariah dgs tend t be yellw t light brwn and f medium height and weight. This may represent the appearance f the mdern dg's ancestr. DNA analysis has shwn pariah dgs t have a mre ancient gene pl than mdern Until the early 1980s, mixed-breed dgs were usually excluded frm bedience and ther dg sprt cmpetitins. Hwever, starting with the American Mixed Breed Obedience Registry (AMBOR) and the Mixed Breed Dg Clubs f America (MBDCA), which created bedience venues in which mixed-breed dgs culd cmpete, mre pprtunities have pened up fr all dgs in all dg sprts. Mst dg agility and flyball rganizatins have always allwed mixed-breed dgs t cmpete. Tday, mixed-breeds have prved their wrth in many perfrmance sprts. Life landscape f a cmmunity Dg Barking patterns % f cmmunity dgs % f time spent I N S E C U R I T Y T O W A R D S D O M E S T I C P E T S P L A Y F U L G R E E T I N G E X C I T E M E N T T E R R I T O R I A L B A R K I N T R U D E R A L E R T C H A S I N G D O W N V E H I C L E S 30% 5% 25% 30% 60% 60% As yu can see frm the graph abve, cmmunity dgs are nt aggressive at all times and mst imprtantly, until prvked r in self-defense. There is a large miscnceptin abut unfunded aggressin in strays. At mst times, they are playful and ccupied in minding their wn business. Like dmestic pets / any ther breeds we knw, their lifestyle is n different. While a dmestic pet wuld lk fr distractins and ways t keep themselves ccupied within the bundaries f a wall, cmmunity dgs find similar ways n the street. Just like dmestic dgs, they like their space, respect and lve. Since the street is their hme, they are fiercely independent and strng with survival. They have an amazing rad & safety sense. They carry a strng sense f belnging t the streets they live in and will g t any extent t prtect humans living in it. The nes wh are clser t humans take the liberty t walk in and ut f their (independent) huses r apartments, greet them and even accmpany them during shrt walks. They are sensitive abut the humans dmestic pets and prvide an element f prtectin as well. Sme times there is a bit f tensin in the air wing t pssessiveness and jealusy and an easy way f harmnzing the situatin is t treat them equally in each thers presence s nther f them feel superir. They have their ways f greeting cautiusly. One must nt mix it up with suspicisn. Always lk fr signs n the tail, ears and eyes. The reasn fr this cautin is based n their variety f gd, bad and ugly experiences n the street, unfrtunately. Cmmunity dgs are territrial. It is their way t prtect their space. While 99% f the time they are animal-territrial, there is a 1% chance they are particular abut their space with

sme humans t. Like rag pickers r bikers wh tease them ften r a particular persn wh may have harmed them in the past. Befre reacting r blaming the dg, it is imprtant t investigate the cause and create harmny between the persn wh is cmplaining and the dg. Remember, calling the lcal municipality ffice is the easiest way ut which will be cncluded with a van arrving, picking the dgs up and putting them t sleep. That apprach is shrt sighted, insensitive and unfair since legally & mrally the streets belng t cmmunity dgs as much as they belng t humans. Streeties chase vehicles ut f sheer anxiety f a large mving bject. Their intentin is nt t harm the human n r in it. When being chased, dn t run r rush. Slw dwn, talk t the dg gently and keep mving. With time, if yu re a regular passerby thrugh the street, they will stp chasing yu nce they gain familiarity t the scent. Intruder alert amng cmmunity dgs is an extremely cmmn thing. They culd raise an alarm f a human, animal, bird, vehicle r any ther bject that culd be viewed as an intrusin. The best way t manage the situatin is by calling their name (if yu dn t knw their name, yu may address them with a name yu re cmfrtable with IN A GENTLE TONE since human intnatin is a canines perceptin f expressin) and creating a distractin with sme gdies. Dgs ANY DOG (regardless f the rigin r breed) are extremely intelligent beings. In my experience, they are like mirrrs. Yu get what yu give them. Especially with cmmunity dgs, they are extremely street-smart and will sense the gd vs bad vibe in n time. Behavir, Cmmunicatin & Emtins 90% 80% 70% 60% 40% 30% 10% 0% 80% 70% 30% 85% 30% 25% 10% 5% 60% 30% 15% 60% 80% Cmmunity dgs are as active, playful, energetic, emtinal & intelligent as any ther pedigree. While all pedigrees were bred fr specific reasns, cmmunity dgs, being mixed breeds, demnstrate certain pedigree traits alng with street survival traits. Their physical attributes are key drivers in establishing ancestral lineage, which may help t ascertain behavirs. As an example, sme f ur cmmunity dgs shw herding and prtective traits f a German shepherd. Sme, based n their physical attributes shw a mix f Mudl Or Rajapalyam Kmbai A racing breed, bred dwn suth in India. While viewing the abve chart, yu will bserve that majrity f behavir patterns tilt tward being alert, fearful r dminating. (Dminatin needs t be viewed cntextually in terms f street survival in this case). Amng ther behavir patterns, these 3 stand ut purely based n their survival instinct. It is indeed a sad truth that they g thrugh a verity f experience n the street, hence cnsidering that, it is natural fr them t be alert at all times. Their behavir differs in islatin and when in a grup. The mre cnfident and strnger nes cme acrss as extrverts and will demnstrate extrvert behaviral traits while in a grup and the mre timid and shy nes

will watch r wait tward the end f the grup. The shy and timid nes d nt cme frward easily t petting, feeding r playing regardless f cmfrtable human prximity. An interesting bservatin I have made ver the years is the give up-give in-lve-hate-supprt-frce relatinship between all dg grups in a cmmunity & I guess the prcess f cexistence amng them ges thrugh an evlving cycle thrugh these stages. Every cmmunity dg in my view can be divided int 3 categries. Intrverts, extrverts, Neutral. The extrverts needless t say are vcal abut all emtins. They cmmunicate with human grups. Participate actively and can be seen in every event, mst f the time. The intrverts shy away frm attentin. What s interesting t nte with the intrvert grup is, they aren t distanced frm the extrvert grup. Smetimes they tag alng t participate in fights. While they may nt g t the extent f getting deeply invlved, they d accmpany and watch frm a distance as if they were signaling that yu have my supprt. I have ften wndered if this stemmed frm a need fr them t please r they scrummed t pressure. Overall, they like t be left alne. The neutral nes are anther interesting lt. They trust frm a distance. They like a lt f space and like t be dealt with a lt f trust. Patience and time is key in develping a relatinship with this grup. The neutral nes have given us quite a bit f chase ver the years when they needed spaying / neutering r any medical attentin. Here are sme key pinters t identify intrvert, extrvert & neutral grups amng cmmunity dgs Intrvert Cmmunity Dg Extrvert Cmmunity Dg Neutral Avids cnflicts The ne t initiate territrial barks and fights NO play, n attachment but feeling prtected, wn t leave the area The ne t be bullied mst f The ne prtecting the dg grup They can be sptted in islated grups the time Uneasy effrt t spt them First ne in line during feeding r playing time Hard catch, wn t cme clse fr feed r medicatin Wn t fllw yu n the street in a friendly manner Fllws yu n the street Always defensive, demnstrate trust issues Shy t petting r playing First ne t start chasing vehicles Rarely wag their tail but d nt shw aggressin either Ears flipped backwards, rlling eyes, lies n their belly indicating submissin during a fight Great recall. Dgs like t eat junk and they scavenge. Be it any dg. One needs t be mindful f nt mixing emtins with this trait. What and hw we feed has nthing t d with why they scavenge. Our dmestic pets, smetimes during a walk end up picking up sme trash and thrw it away after repeated persuasin. What can be cntrlled is the type f fd cmmunity dgs are fed and what happens utside f the feeding time is really nt in human cntrl. What is critical thugh is t prtect them frm fatal diseases that may arise due t trash binging thrugh annual vaccinatins and peridic de wrming. Fd Type t be avided Sleeping Pattern Dgs are light sleepers barring exceptins f ld age and health. They culd be snring ne mment and the next they culd be n their feet leaping and hpping twards smething. It is imprtant fr ne t knw, similar t humans, dgs shuldn t be wken up frm their sleep. They tend t get irritated r cranky. The sleeping pattern graph abve may be tied int their persnality types as well. Over the years I have bserved, there is a strng cnnectin between the tw. Cmmn Health Issues and ways t address it Insect bites Vmiting Ticks and Fleas Diarrhea Repeated eye infectins Fight r abuse injuries Skin issues (All types) Distemper Old age muscle r jint prblems Tick Fever Fever and Cld Rabies Acidity r indigestin Fundamental Preventive Measures First aid medicatins t keep handy Annual 7in1 Vaccinatin Vmiting & Acidity Rantac r Pant D fr Acidicty / Emmicet fr Vmiting 6 Mnthly Dewrming External Injuries Betadine / Nebasulf Spraying tick slutins / skin slutins Ticks and Fleas Blf (demag fr Maggts) Avid Nn canine fd / add affrdable prtein in daily diet Ear infectins Salicylic Acid ear cleanser r Spectrazl rubbed ver cttn Keep water available at all times Fever & Cld Crcin syrup/ Spridex Build a designated area fr them t rest Dehydratin Nrmetrgyl / lt f water Spray generus amunt f tick pwders n their beds. Additinally, It is extremely critical t understand health issues r risks may emerge thrugh each stage f a canine s r any animal s life fr that matter. In rder t prvide a hlistic view, I have created a diagram, depicting characteristics, prbable hazards, health issues & illness / signs thrugh fur stages f a dg s life based n my past and present experience f the 7 at hme wh range between 6 mnths 14 years. Cmmn cmmunity dg issues peple reprt & suggested reslutins Chasing cats & birds Hunting dwn Hens Place picking utside street shp utlets Jumping ver walls during dmestic female canine in heat Jumping ver walls t muddig & sleep Interim territrial agressin twards dmesic pets during walk Hwling at night Nisy meal times Nisy Dg fights (Amng grups r territrial) Chasing dwn vehicles Nisy mating seasn times Dgs will be Dgs! Recall the time yur puppy chewed yur she lace r scks! Recall hw that favrite furniture was turned int smething unrecgnizable within days f purchasing it! All dgs are the same. Cmmunity dgs have fun n the street while dmestic pets at hme. Amng ther, cmmn grwing up

behavirs, the nes listed in the graph abve are mre pertinent t strays because the street is their hme. In my experience, mst f the time, calming signals r calling ut their names help. If neighbrs cmplain abut their garden being ruined, help them find a slutin by increasing the size f the fence r creating a designated sleeping area utside f their huse. What is imprtant is creating awareness. The cmmunity needs t knw that they belng t the street as much as humans d. T that extent, if laws need t be quted, d it. Fighting, arguing r shuting wn t help the dg. This game is all abut patience and wisdm. It is a relentless effrt t cntinue educating peple abut cmmunity dg management. Frm times that ur neighbrs wuld scream, shw up at ur dr step t cmplain because f these issues, we have nw reached a phase where amng 80 huses n the street, abut 30 f them feed cmmunity dgs! Few f them feed left ver vegetables t cattle & that in my view is a paradigm shift frm hating t subtly participating where pssible. That cmpassin majrity is gd enugh! It did nt happen vernight. It tk a lt f leading by example, creating awareness, citing real time examples then and there fr peple t understand that cmmunity dgs were nt a nuisance, they belnged here and it was everyne s mral respnsibility t prvide fd and shelter within their capacity. Apartments are unfrtunately, htspts fr stray feeding r pet spats if I may. It will be gd fr cmmunity dg carers and apartment based pet parents t knw few fundamental animal laws as utlined belw 1. N RWA can legally intrduce any srt f ban n keeping f pet dgs by residents. 2. RWAs cannt insist that nly small size dgs are acceptable and larger breeds are nt. 3. Dg barking cannt be cited as a valid r cmpelling reasn fr intrducing any ban. 4. Residents have the legal and fundamental right t chse the life that they wish t live, which includes such facets as living with r withut cmpanin animals and n ban can be put n the same. 5. Unless the pet wning residents are nt vilating any municipal laws, n bjectin can be laid dwn. 6. With respect t use f elevatrs / lifts: There are n curt rulings that disallw pets frm using the elevatrs, especially in multi-stry residential apartments and hence n charges can be impsed n residents wh wn pets. 7. RWAs have t ensure that n restrictin is impsed neither a ban nr any special charges fr the use f lifts by pets. 8. With respect t use f Parks / Gardens by pets RWAs cannt ban pets frm gardens r parks.in case the park / garden is a cmmn area which residents als use, a particular time may be fixed when pets can be walked in the park / garden withut any incnvenience t ther residents. 9. With respect t use f leashes r muzzles Pet wners can be requested t walk their pets n leash especially when walking them in cmmn areas. The use f muzzles cannt be insisted upn the pet wners. 10. With respect t defecatin f pets in cmmunity premises Pet wners can be requested t clean up after their pets in case the pets ease themselves in cmmunity premises. N rule / regulatin / by laws / special charges / fines can be impsed fr the mandatry cleaning f the same. 11. RWAs may experiment with the creatin f several pet defecatin areas within the cmmunity premises and pet wners can be requested t train their pets t use the same. N special charges / fines can be impsed n any pet wner, as there is n mandate in the law fr the same. With respect t intimidatin If any assciatin succeeds in intimidating a pet wner t give up r abandn their pet, it will actually have abetted vilatin f law. Fllwing are the key pints in the circular with regards t the treatment f street dgs: N street dg can be beaten r driven away r killed frm the neighbrhd. Animal birth cntrl measures and vaccinatins may be undertaken but the dgs will have t be released back int the same lcality r territry after sterilizatin and immunity The same will be dne as dgs are territrial in nature.

They tend t fight ff ther dgs and keep them frm entering int their territries hence stabilizing the dg ppulatin within each lcality. There is n law that prhibits the feeding f street animals Animal cruelty is an ffense under Sectin 11 f the Preventin f Cruelty t Animals Act and Sectins 428 / 429 f the Indian Penal Cde. The same is punishable with imprisnment and fine. Attempts t interfere with r harass peple wh chse t tend t and feed cmmunity dgs, may lead t a grave ffense f criminal intimidatin. Any aggressin r hstility that the dgs may be subjected t, will nly render them aggressive r hstile twards the humans. Beynd all this, there are sme peple wh just wn t budge. Fr thse cases, simply distance the dg frm that area by feeding smewhere else and creating a designated spt in a different place within the vicinity. Last and definitely nt the least, gain as much insight as pssible int their lives s yu re able t intelligently cunter resistance and rejectin amng peple wh dn t like dgs BUT d nt stp the lvely wrk yu re ding! Befriending a cmmunity dg Apprach the dg in a friendly manner. Yur psture shuld nt be verarching. Mvements shuld be neither slw nr swift. Dn t lk t much in the eye. Maintain a neutral tne. D nt apprach if yu re nervus. They read minds extremely well. Carry treats, Stretch yur arm with treats at a distance. Observe bdy language and understand which grup they belng t. Psitin next steps apprpriately. When the dg develps trust, cntinue this feeding cycle fr cuple f days. Ensure t take water alng since nw all streets have water bwls. The fd and water will prvide a sense f safety and assurance t the dg. After cuple f days, when the dg appraches yu, start petting. D nt fllw the dg t pet r play.
