Five ways to drive your vet crazy Take care of the vet who takes care of your pet! (Pet Connection Veterinary Clinic copyright, all right reserved) Pets owners are frequently puzzled about the kind of personality their vet belongs to. In doing so they encounter lots of difficulties, mainly because the vet they meet at the grocery seems sometimes not the same person they meet in the Clinic, in the line of a Dr Jeckill and Mr Hyde stereotype! Here is an easy way to sort out your vet personality, through a 5-steps quiz that will surprise you. Please tick the answer that most resemble the one you get from your vet: 1) You enter the consultation room with your beloved cross-breed dog, 50% Saluki, 25% English bulldog, 12.5% Terrier and 12.5% German shepherd and ask the vet which breed is it. a) I m a vet, not a breeder or a dog show judge (defensive = D), b) There are at least 263 recognised dog breeds and many of them originated from older breeds (common sense = CS), c) I would like to guess but not ask me to bet it! (sense of humour = SH).
2) You read about someone else s dog s medical problem on the Internet and ask your vet to diagnose the condition. a) There is a lot of garbage info thrown in the Internet (D), b) It is impossible without knowing the case history and the lab work results (CS), c) I can do that but I have to obtain the diagnosis you ask for through a fully comprehensive exclusionary diagnostic protocol (SH). 3) You ve heard that experimental stem cell transplantation has been performed in dogs and ask your vet to do it. a) Are you kidding me? (D) b) This technique is still in his infancy but in 50 years from now probably many vets will be able to perform it (CS) c) Unfortunately we are not yet ready for this: we will open the Stem Cell Transplants Department only next month (SH). 4) You go through all testing to make sure your dog is healthy and then take it to a grooming or boarding facility with unknown safety, only to come back one week later complaining with your vet of Kennel cough.
a) You seem obstinately not to be able to listen to my suggestions (D) b) It is not predictable but highly possible that non vaccinated dogs get Kennel cough in an environment densely populated by other dogs (CS). c) I got kennel cough too last winter even though my cholesterol and triglycerides were within normal ranges (SH). 5) You don t allow your vet to do diagnostic testing and complain when he doesn t give you a precise diagnosis. a) Don t demand me to guess blindly what s wrong with your bloody dog (D). b) A sick animal often shows the same set of symptoms no matter what the problem. Hence, testing is necessary in veterinary medicine if owners want the best chance for a correct diagnosis and positive outcome (CS). c) You re speaking to the right person. Last year I attended an international seminar for clinical magicians but to tell you the true the diagnostic procedure suggested was quite evasive, misty and confused and right now I can t remember anything (SH). Please, count the ticks assigned to every answer options (a, b, c); assess which is the commonest answer and you ll know if the personality of your vet resembles more the defensive (D), common sense (CS), or sense of humour (SH) type!
