The Herding Instinct Test is open to Collies six (6) months of age or older that are registered with The American Kennel Club or have been granted an ILP\PAL and are eligible to compete in herding trials and tests under Chapter 1, Section 3 of the AKC Herding Regulations. Livestock Livestock provided by Susan Rhoades, Keepstone Farm Sheep (Mixed breed hair & wool sheep)... 3-5 sheep per run (Value of sheep: $300 each) Ducks (Blue Swede and Blue Swede hybrids)... 5 ducks per run (Value of ducks: $75 each) Cattle (Beef & Dairy mixes)... 3 cattle per run (Value of cattle: $900 each) Herding Instinct Test The Instinct Test is held in a small pen, either round in shape or with rounded corners, which can vary in size from 50 x 50 feet, up to 100 x 100 feet. Livestock offered at this trial is sheep. The dog will enter the pen on a 6-15 foot long line. Before removing the line, the dog must demonstrate a stop (down, sit or stand) and a recall. Once the dog has completed this exercise, the line may be dropped for the dog to drag, or removed entirely. If the dog cannot exhibit the stop, the tester is not to allow the dog off-line. Once the dog is allowed to approach the livestock, the tester will be looking for sustained interest in controlling the livestock. This can be shown by the dog gathering the livestock, moving the livestock toward the handler, or moving them ahead of the handler in a driving position. A combination of any of these styles is acceptable. The AKC Herding Instinct Certificate requires two passes under two different judges. The CCA Instinct Test is available under either judge, and requires only one pass.

The Lois Russell Perpetual Remembrance The Collie Club of Connecticut and the Hartford-Springfield Collie Club offer The Lois Russell Perpetual Remembrance to honor a gracious lady in the sport of herding with our beloved breed, the Collie. Lois Russell was instrumental in her efforts resulting in AKC and CCA adopting herding as an event to restore our breed s working heritage. Also, the Collie Club of Connecticut and the Hartford-Springfield Collie Club wish to pay tribute to Lois ten years of service as Connecticut s District Director. The annual winner will receive a copy of the bronze composite relief casting of the herding scene mounted on the side of The Lois Russell Perpetual Remembrance to be provided by the Collie Club of Connecticut and the Hartford-Springfield Collie Club. The winner must be a CCA member owning the Highest Scoring Collie with a qualifying score on sheep from the Course A classes at the national herding trial. In years with multiple trials there will be only one composite relief casting awarded. In the event of a multiple-trial event creating a tie or a one-day event with tie score classes, the winner is to be determined by AKC Herding Regulations, Chapter 4, Section 9, Ties. Please follow any additional instructions on our website. NEW FOR 2018: Exhibitors providing email addresses will receive all communication, including confirmation and judging schedule through email.
