We will be meeting in the obedience building at the Whidbey Island Kennel Club show in Monroe around noon. This is an important meeting as we have several budgets to be approved. Also of huge significance will be a discussion of the suggested donations the club will be making. The donation committee has come up with three worthy recipients, however keep in mind that it is up to the club to vote to accept the committee s recommendations or to send them back for more research. A suggestion has been made that the club obtain a PayPal account. The board is interested in hearing the membership s opinion, pros and cons. Please come and share your opinions. It is time to start thinking about the awards you and your dog have earned this past year. Even if you do not want a plaque or bars, fill out the awards form and share your accomplishments. It is never easy and a lot of work goes into training our dogs for competition. Share your joy! ~ Terrie ~ Newsletter Editor Amy Reagan Islandlady303@yahoo.com Canine Post is published ten times a year by the Washington State Obedience Training Club (WSOTC), an AKC member club. DONATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT The Donations Committee, which consisted of Sharon Colvin, Laura Burns, Karen Snee and Sue Cox solicited suggestions of recipients of the $5,000 in excess funds designated for donations. We carefully considered each of the recommendations and then we all quickly agreed on the three organizations shown below (all 501 3 organizations). This proposal will be presented to the membership at the November general membership meeting. Voting to approve these donations will take place at the January 2019 general membership meeting during the Saturday show at Puyallup. The Board approved our recommend donations to the following organizations: *PRISON PET PARTNERSHIP Purdy Prison For Women. We recommend a $1250 donation, which would be used for purchasing a wide variety of supplies to house, care for and train dogs by selected inmates. Dogs all come from animal rescue organizations. PPP has been in existence for 30 years; WSOTC has supported them with donations in the past. http://www.prisonpetpartnership.org/ *K-9 KEVLAR VEST FOR A SERVICE DOG IN KING COUNTY The vests average $2560 per dog (custom fit). The volunteer Whatcom County Sheriff s Office Support Foundation works to provide them for free to K-9 dogs throughout the state. We will specifically ask our donation to provide a vest for a K-9 in King County. It is recommended $2500 be donated to this group. www.whatcomcountysheriff.org/2011/03/21about-the-wcso-foundation/ *AKC HUMANE FUND Awards grants to women s shelters that permit pets. Many abused women will not leave their dangerous home situations because they are unable to take pets with them. Shelters must apply for a grant and strict regulations apply. This is administered by the AKC Grant Review Committee. We ll ask our donation to benefit a location in the Pacific Northwest; they have already given grants to six women s shelters in Washington state and five organizations in Oregon. A donation of $1250 is recommended. www.akchumanefund.org The committee gave serious consideration to these additional organizations. Their web site is included in the event a member would like to know more about them and/or support them with a private donation: OLD DOG HAVEN This group has many ongoing fund drives and seems well-supported in the area. We have donated to them in the past. https://olddoghaven.org/ MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION A very well nationally publicized research grant group covering many animal species. https://www.morrisanimalfoundation.org AKC CANINE HEALTH FOUNDATION An excellent group funding research into dog health. We have supported them in the past and they continue to be well-supported nationally. http://www.akcchf.org/ BECK S PLACE A program for low-income individuals facing instability where foster care is needed for their pet(s). This group serves residents of Snohomish County. https://www.becksplace.org/ PUPPY UP FOUNDATION Based in Tennessee, this organization s mission statement reads: The Puppy Up Foundation is committed to discovering the common links between canine and human cancers and the causes of these cancers through comparative oncology research. They sponsor walks in several parts of the country. https://www.puppyup.org/ TAKE THE LEAD -- Take The Lead provides direct services, support and care for people in the sport of purebred dogs who suffer the devastation of life-threatening or terminal illness. Offers membership and many dog clubs hold fund-raisers. Started in 1993. Some Pacific NW dog people have been able to receive 6 financial support. www.takethelead.org Sue Cox, Donations Committee Chairman

The Fall/Winter weather is here in the NW and unless you have a training building or like to get wet, a lot of us are indoors reading a book. If you are like me, I love good but funny dog mystery books. So when it s raining cats and dogs, try out one of these books! One of my favorite is a renowned Cardigan Corgi breeder-author named Karen Harbert. I have listed all her books to date here. While she is a longtime breeder and her fame is in Conformation, she does have Obedience titles on her Corgis and intertwines this into her mysteries. Her books are available in Kindle format on Amazon. ~ Editor ~ 1) Maritime Summer 2) Medium Rare 3) Southern Discomfort Karen would love any plot suggestions for future books. Her books are easy fast reads and ideal for cold evenings!. You can find more about her on http://aelwydcwc.com/aelwyd.htm You will also find yummy recipes in her books to try as well! (I have no financial interests here.) Thanks to Karen Harbert, she recommended another series of books to read by Donna Ball. For those of you with Border Collies, you will find this mystery series quite fun to read. 1) Flash 2) The Sound of Running Horses 3) Flash of Brilliance 12
