May 2017 WITH SUNFLOWER DERMATOLOGY & MEDICAL DAY SPA better skin for a better life IN THIS ISSUE: 2 Stump the Doctor 3 SunBlock Party Invite 4 Staff Spotlight 5 F&F News 6 What s New? 7 Refer & Win 8 Product of the Month NOTE FROM DR. MATTHYS Who s Your Chippy? As any parent will know, having a young child brings many emotions. Happy, sad, frustrated, etc. But one thing that makes me the happiest is when my daughter finds relief, hope and satisfaction in her doll, Chippy. Chippy, as you can see in the photo, is an elf. He probably should have been put away with the Christmas decorations. But that was not possible as nothing can get done without holding Chippy or knowing where Chippy is located. Chippy sleeps, eats and goes to school with my daughter. Any concern or worry is immediately calmed by her holding and hugging Chippy. In fact, she always smiles in the company of Chippy. As we re-learn important ideas from our children, I believe we all need a Chippy. Maybe we should not carry a doll with us at all times (although each to their own wishes) but maybe a figurative Chippy will do just fine. Whether it is your faith, your spouse or your ability to believe in yourself through a growth mindset, we all need to have a desire to see hope through the storms of life....continued on Page 7 www. s u n f l o w e r d e r m a t o l o g y. c o m // 8 1 6-3 9 9-4 4 6 5

stump the doctor Q. Am I addicted to my smartphone? A. I am a device junky. Period. No doubt. I have a cabinet full of devices that I have collected over the years. Apple Newton. Check. All the iphones. Check. All the ipads. Check. Laptops. Check. Apple Watch. Check. Even old school hand held video football. Check. But, I am starting to notice a problem. I have an addiction. One that if it was a drug, I would have to go in rehab. It is my smartphone. Holding it. Needing to check it routinely when I am home or on weekends. Fortunately, I am not so addicted to social media but do check it for work or fun sometimes just to check in to see what my friends are doing. I think this is an uncomfortable topic because people don t want to think it is a problem. It is a problem. Next time you are at a stop light, check out how many people are on their phone. The number of pedestrians struck and killed by cars almost doubled last year. Notice how many people are walking around clutch their phones. I routinely have to ask people to put their phones down during medical exams. Most kids can t sit idly during their parent s visits without some device. Why do we love it so??? The reward hormone dopamine. Every time you check it, you get a hit. Facebook, a hit. Instagram, a hit. One more piece of news, a hit. Email for the 30th time, a hit. It has been said that people unlock their cell phone 80 plus times a day. WOW! And teenagers are worse and have never known different. So, here is how I am addressing it with me. Our daughter is technology free. She is never given a device. Period. We are beginning technology free Sundays. I have a land line where I forward my phone when I am home (no one calls anyway!). I am going to leave my phone in the car until my daughter goes to bed. I have all devices on Do Not Disturb at work. And, I will celebrate slow and steady progress. This won t be easy. But, I am convinced that the white space it may create will be beneficial. Addiction to anything is always bad so let s work together to make our lives better so we don t look back at cell phones and think that they are the cigarettes of our time. 2 // www.sunflowerdermatology.com // facebook.com/sunflowerdermatology

team member spotlight TARA EIDSON How long have you worked at Sunflower Dermatology and what do you do? I did my internship here in October 2014. I was offered a full time position in December 2014. I was recently promoted to lead medical assistant. So now I also do some of the administrative work and scheduling plus order supplies. I help get patients into the rooms, follow and transcribe with the doctors, conduct training with new staff members. What s your favorite thing about your job? Patients! We have great patients and I also enjoy all the staff here. I was really ignorant to the skin before I started here and now I feel like we re saving lives because of how we help patients. The doctors are great! What s the one product you can t live without? My antioxidants. I use Phloretin CF because it has lightened my sun damage spots and my skin looks a lot better. I have a ton of products, and like our patients I had to have one of the aestheticians help me with the order of application so I can get the biggest benefits from my products. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I enjoy family. I ve been married for about 11 years and we both have family here. We travel to North Carolina every year. I take my hat, sunscreen and protective clothing so I can enjoy the beach! 4 // www.sunflowerdermatology.com // facebook.com/sunflowerdermatology

DRESS. SHOES. HAIR. DONE! SKIP THE TAN. It s prom season. While teens are more enthralled than ever with event tanning we are seeing alarming rates of skin cancer in 15-24 year olds. They truly believe that just a few sessions in a tanning bed is not risky. However, the statistics say it best: People who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by 75 percent. (skincancer.org) So please if you have a teen in your home or in your life, encourage them to embrace their natural skin tone. If they absolutely can t stand the thought of not having a tan, tanning creams or spray tanning can suffice for special events. TAKE TANNING OFF THE PROM CHECKLIST. Let them know that Skin Cancer is Never in Style! #fairandfashionable Skincerely, Your Tan-Free Friends at Fair & Fashionable Fair & Fashionable is a movement that utilizes fashion as a platform to reduce the rate of skin cancer. what s new in dermatology? MADE IN THE SHADE? We hear it every day. I don t need to wear sun protection because I don t go outside. Of course, my next question is How did you get here? Our jobs as skin doctors to educate engaged people about the sun is never ending. Most people are unaware of how the daily exposure to natural light affects their skin (for example: riding in vehicles, reflections off the sand, cement and/or devices, and actually how much sun comes through the clouds.) As I continue to ask people to wear a product daily that only takes about 15-30 seconds to apply, I remember the struggle of adding anything new to a routine. So, we look for bright spots to start change Do you wear a moisturizer daily? If so, can we add one with a SPF? Do you wear sunscreen when you go to the beach? Well, how can we make every day a day at the beach? When it comes to the idea of shade versus sunscreen at the beach, a study was performed to see how each worked to prevent sunburn. A group of 81 people were sent to a sunny beach mid-day for 3.5 hours to hang out. One group spent time under an umbrella, the other used sunscreen. The outcome was that 78% of the umbrella group showed signs of sunburn while 25% of the SPF group revealed the same. Why do we aim to prevent sunburn? Because sunburn leads to skin cancer. Over a lifetime with 5 sunburns, your risk of malignant melanoma doubles. So please, sit under an umbrella AND wear your sunscreen daily to avoid the burn. Your skin will thank you! 6 // www.sunflowerdermatology.com // facebook.com/sunflowerdermatology

Continued from Front Cover NOTE FROM DR. MATTHYS Who s Your Chippy? My favorite daughter quote, so far, is when I ask her why she is so happy? Her answer because I am. Brilliant! In her almost 3 year old brain, she just decided to be happy! Is it really possible for us to just decide to be happy? My favorite pastor, Andy Stanley says, In order to be happy, you need a who or two. Meaning, people derive happiness from reaping and sewing experiences with people vs material goods or technology. My favorite meditation app, HeadSpace, says, There is always blue sky somewhere meaning that even in a severe thunderstorm blue sky is not far away. And, as I mentioned, my daughter says she is happy because she is happy. A decision. Life is busier than ever and it has never been easier to feel frustrated, behind and hopeless. Take a minute today, listen to the birds, breathe and find your Chippy. You won t regret it! Wishing you better skin for a better life.
