P A G E 2 Plants Did you know that plants are organisms? Organisms are living things. In order for plants to survive they need sun, minerals, water, and air. The parts of a plant are roots, stem, and leaves. Each plant part has its own job. The roots are the part of the plant that grows underground. The roots have a very important job. They take in water and minerals to the stem. The stem is the part of the plant that supports the plant. The stem also carries water/minerals from the roots. It also brings the food from the leaves to other parts. The last job of the stem is to help the plant stand upright. The leaves have chlorophyll that traps energy from the sunlight. The leaves take in sunlight too. The leaves are the main food making part of the plant. The leaves also uses sun s energy & carbon dioxide. The parts of a plant are all very important. Without the plant parts the plant would not survive. Life Cycle of a Animal All animals go through the life cycle. The 4 stages are birth, grow and change, reproduction, and death.birth is when the animal is born. Grow and changes in when animals develop and change color. Reproduction is when they make more of their own kind. The final stage is death. Death is when they are old and eventu- ally dyes. As long as this goes on the animals will never be extended. long as this goes on the animals will never be extended. A L E X A N D E R N E W S

V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 3 Penguin Research Are you interested in penguins? Did you know that penguins live near the sea? They are in the southern hemisphere. Some penguins are big like the Emperor penguin, and some are small like penguin like the Adelie penguin and the Chinstrap penguin. They all have special characteristics to tell them apart. There are 17 different species of penguins, I will tell you 6 of them, Emperor, King, Genoa, Adelie, Chinstrap, and Galapagos penguin. The Emperor penguins live in Antarctica. They are one of biggest penguins. The Emperor penguin weighs up to 90 pounds, and they are nearly 4 feet tall! These penguins have orange glow on their cheeks. Did you know that once the egg is laid the dad take care of the egg. The King penguin lives in the sub- Antarctica islands. They stand 3 feet tall! These penguins weigh 35 pounds. The King penguin has orange spots near their ears and on their neck. Did you know that these cool penguin chicks have a lot of brown feathers for their first year of their life span!!! The Gentoo penguin lives in the islands of the Antarctica region. They weigh about 13 pounds. These penguins have a big white line over there head. The Gentoo penguin stands 3 feet tall!!!! Did you know that they make bed in the grassland. The Adelie penguin lives on the cold beaches of Antarctica. They weigh 8 9 pounds. These penguins stand 2 feet tall and they are the smallest penguin. There special part of their body is their head it s all black. The Aledlie penguin usually eats fish. The Chinstrap penguin lives in the icebergs in the Arctic regain. They weigh 10 pounds. These penguins stand 2 feet tall. The Chinstrap penguin has a small black line that is on their chin. Did you know that Chinstrap penguins only eat fish and krill. The Galapagos penguin lives in the northern hemisphere. They weigh 4-6 pounds. They stand almost 2 feet tall. To tell them apart the upper part of their body is black and the bottom of them is white. Did you know that Galapagos penguins molt. Did you know that there are still 11penguins out there. The 6 penguins that I told you about all live in the Sothern hemisphere except the Galapagos penguin.

P A G E 4 How to do a Front Walk Over Do you like gymnastics? There are many different moves in gymnastics like splits, straddles, handstands, cartwheels, and back bends, but today I am going to teach you how to do a front walk over. You will need a mat and a comfy outfit. The best way to get started is to have a mat at least a foot bigger than you. To do a front walk over you can follow these 7 simple steps. First you will get your mats out. It should be at least 5 feet long. Then you should stretch out your legs and your back, make sure you don t forget to stretch because you can get injured. After you stretch out you will get into a launge. A launge is where you have a foot in front with your knee bent and your hands above your head. Once you are secure in your launge you will go down into a handstand. In your handstand be sure that your arms are secure and straight. If they are not you will fall. Then in your handstand you will immediately go into a backbend. Don t tuck your head in the backbend it will make you unsteady. Immediately after your feet touch the ground in your backbend you will stand up. If you are not good just try!!! The finale step is to launge at the end. Tada!!! People should start clapping. Yay Now that you know how to do a front walk over you are going to love gymnastics. I hope that once you are great at a front walk over you might be able to do harder moves like back hand springs, front tucks, and back tucks. Keep going and you can be better and better at gymnastics!!! Rocks And Minerals What are minerals? Minerals are the building blocks of rocks. All rocks are made from minerals. Minerals are a substance found in nature that are not a plant or animal. There are 3 types of rocks made from minerals, they are the Igneous Rock, Sedimentary Rock, and the Metamorphic Rock. What are Igneous Rocks? Igneous Rocks are rocks that are formed when melted rock cools and hardens. When Igneous Rocks are inside the Earth they melt and cool slowly, but when they are on the surface they melt and cool quickly. Igneous Rocks are Fire-Made. Did you know that when volcanoes erupt they erupt using Igneous Rocks? Some things like granite and basalt are made from Igneous Rocks. What are Sedimentary Rocks? Sedimentary Rocks form when sand, mud and pebbles at the bottom of lakes, rivers, and oceans pile up. They press together and make solid rocks. Some examples of Sedimentary rocks are sandstone, siltstone, and shale. What are Metamorphic rocks? Metamorphic rocks mean change in form. They change through squeezing and heating. Some examples of Metamorphic rocks are granite and gneiss. Rocks are all around us and used for many things! A L E X A N D E R N E W S

V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 5 Cats or Dogs All pets are great, but I think that cats are the best pet to have. They are a best friend, they are easy to groom, and they are maintenance free. Cats might be playful sometimes but then they will sleep for hours and hours! I have a cat and I love him so much. Cats are great companions. They can be alone for days at a time. Cats do not need as much exercise as dogs need. The passage states that your cat will probably be happy chasing a ball in your living room. Sometimes cats like to be alone, but my cat Luca likes to be out of under the bed and with my mom my brother and I. He usually will sleep upstairs when we are not home. Most to all cats are easy to groom. It says in the article that you do not have to bathe your cat, they bathe themselves. You do not need to brush them either. My cat cleans himself at least twice a day. Basically cats are maintenance free. They sleep all day and are much quieter. The passage states that cats don t disturb your neighbors. Luca makes no noise at all. Water Conservation Why should we save our water? When you conserve water it means to save water, use it wisely. In the article Save Our Water and the video Adventures of EcoRilla they are saving our water and how you can make a difference. Some ways that you can conserve water are you can take shorter show and when you are washing your hands. If you take a shorter shower you can conserve water. The article states that if you take shorter showers you can save about 17 gallons of water. I take 5 minute showers too. According to the article Save Our Water, when you wash your hands you should turn off the water when you lather your hands with soap. You can conserve water just by turning off your water. The 20 seconds that you lather your hands with soap with the water off that is another 20 seconds that you have it when you need it. I just told you 2 ways that you can conserve water. You can take shorter showers and you can turn the water off when you are washing your hands. Remember that every living thing needs clean, fresh water to survive.

P A G E 6 Fly Eagle Fly The story Fly Eagle Fly is an African folk tale. The farmer found a lost eaglet. He trained it to be a chicken. His friend came over and tried to get it to fly, it didn t work. The man tried and tried again. His friend told him that he was going to take the eagle to the top of the mountain to get it to fly. They got to the top of the mountain. The farmer s friend said Fly Eagle Fly and sure enough it worked. The eagle flew into the distance of the rising sun in the morning. Smart Dog Smart Dog is a humorous fiction book. Charlie was trying to train his dog Toby. The first time it Didn t work. He tried to use biscuits. At first Toby listen. He wanted to play games, he was not concentrated. Charlie left the gate open and Toby ran out chasing a squirrel. Finally Toby retraced his steps back home. When he got home they went into Charlie s room, Toby went to sleep and Charlie cuddled next to him. A L E X A N D E R N E W S
