The Pal News Holiday Edition December 2015 The President s Message Jim Hunter, Ks Hello Fellow Palomino Breeders, It s been just about a month since many of us were in attendance at the ARBA Convention and Show in Portland. I ve had just about enough time to catch my breath and decide where I want to try to take my herd genetics to and I am anxious to get started with the breeding! I did not purchase any new genetics for my Pals, but I did trade James Brown a typy little lynx junior doe for a very nice golden 6/8 doe. I was so happy that Jim made the trip from Pennsylvania to attend the show in Portland. It was so good to see many of the breeders who are regular attendees of our national shows and it was good to meet some of those breeders from the Pacific Northwest who I wouldn t normally see at shows. I want to welcome all of the new members to our club. I am really excited to have Karl and Bianca Haering as new members. They flew down to the convention from Alaska and took two pairs of golden Pals back with them. How Editor Harold Dunkle exciting to have members raising our wonderful breed in ALASKA! I want to congratulate Cathy Dunkle on her sweep of the top awards for the breed. Congratulations to Cliff and Terri King on having the best display and congratulations to all of the class winners in open. Congratulations to Jackson Armstrong for having the BOB in youth and to Makayla Moran for having the BOS in youth. Congratulations to all of the class winners who showed in youth. I am confident that you will find the complete results from the Portland show elsewhere in this issue of the Pal News. As with all shows, there are a lot of great things that happen, and as with all shows there are things that happen that leave kind of a bad taste in your mouth. This show was no different. On the positive side of the show coin: we were cooped in an area that saw very little traffic from other breeds; we were in the same part of the show area where the coffee concession was located; as far as I know the breeders traveled to and from the show safely and all arrived at their destinations without incident; all the rabbits were in good health for

the show although many that traveled long distance lost some condition, which is to be expected; everyone that I talked to had a wonderful experience at the show and convention; many of us made several new and wonderful friendships, and; we all got to share the blessings the Pacific Northwest has to offer in the way of scenic beauty, a variety of cuisine to select from, and the courtesy and kindnesses shown by the local population toward the visitors from around the country. All in all, Portland was a wonderful place with a wonderful venue for the Convention and Show! I would definitely go there for another! I think it was unfortunate that the Palomino breeders were hurried at the end of the first day of showing to get ready to show their animals. We all expected to show on the following morning and none of us were really prepared, nor did we have the opportunity to have our rabbits groomed and prepared to present on such short notice. I am looking forward to San Diego s ARBA Convention and Show in 2016 and I know many of you Pal breeders are looking forward to that as well. Before that, our Palomino Spring National Show will be held in Canton, Ohio. I m sure there is more about that in this issue. I am excited about having some golden prospects in the nest boxes. I purchased some very young golden does from Cheryl Gamber when I was in Fort Worth and traded for a golden doe from the Utters at the 2015 Palomino Spring National show in Hutchinson. I am happy to report that I have litters from all three of those does that were kindled the second weekend after my return from Portland. I hope you all have prospects for that show as well and I look forward to seeing many of you who I know only by name and your Facebook profile photos. As Always, Be a Pal to the Pals! Jim District 2 Report, welcome Jay Horn our new Director. Hi, my name is Jay Horn, and I want to introduce myself as the new District Two director. Back when I was a kid I can remember admiring Palominos- it only took about 30 years to actually get some. I've been breeding Goldens for four years now. In the beginning I searched far and wide for stock to start with- hoping to get some diversity of bloodlines in this rare breed, and was able to pick up good quality rabbits from about six different strains. Of course, this diversity of genetics has resulted in a diversity of results! But I'm getting enough good ones now to encourage me onward. Here on the central coast of California in San Luis Obispo County (halfway between L.A. and San Francisco), you don't see many Pals, and often I'm the only exhibitor at local shows. But traveling a few hours will usually find me some friendly competition to keep things interesting. You fellow Pal admirers probably wonder, like I do, why more people don't raise this great breed. One reason is lack of availability. I try to bring pairs for sale to shows I attend, and have been able to start a few folks out that way. Portland Convention was fun partly because there were way more Pals than I would usually see. Congrats to all the winners! Of course, I think everyone who raises Palominos is a winner. I have not served as a district director before, so I want to encourage you District Two folks to contact me with news and concerns, as I learn the ropes and what needs to be done. Currently, I have been attending less shows due to family health issues, so please share show results with me, and I'll pass them along for the newsletter. My email is 2jayhorn@att.net I look forward to meeting more of you as the years, and the shows go on. Jay

District 4- Latosha Lucas, Tx Hello, from Texas. Thank you for letting me be you district Rep. Hope this finds everyone in good health. Hope everyone had a good summer break, it was good to see Mr. James Hunter and his wife at the Tulsa State Fair this October. Congrats to him on winning Best of Breed and Best Opposite of breed both shows. Congrats to Tammy Wilcox on winning Best of Breed and Best Opposite of Breed both shows in youth. Also, Congrats to Cathy on winning Best of Breed and Best Opposite of Breed at Convention, and her grandson for winning Best of Breed in the youth. If anyone in District 4 has Best of Breed, Best Opposite of Breed, or Best in Show please e-mail. Also, feel free to e-mail me at Sawb@texoma.net Hope everyone has a great holiday season. See yall around at the show District 5 Report- Beth Thurn, KS I've been busy with school so haven't made it to many shows. I have acquired some new rabbits to breed with and have three beautiful babies born in October on my birthday so I am anxious to get more involved with showing soon. We attended the Sunflower/Windy Plains Rabbit show on November 21 in Wichita. Six Palomino breeders entered rabbits from Oklahoma and Kansas. It was nice to get to visit with them. Some have been with Palominos many years, others are newer to our breed which is exciting. Hope they continue to breed and show Palominos. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. Beth Thurn generally been good for rabbits and their humans! Looking forward to lots of palomino kits in the spring! District 9 Report, Jim Brown, PA Congratulations to Luke Teaford of PA, a D9 Youth member, for his double Best in Show win in Open at the Delmarva Rabbit and Cavy Breeders Association show on September 26, 2016 in Easton, MD with his senior golden doe. Luke's good fortune continued that day to take double honors in the Best of the Rare Breeds competition. Convention & National Judge Recommendations: At the ARBA Convention in Portland, we discussed the need to create a list of judges that evaluate our breed well and would make excellent judges for future ARBA Conventions and Palomino Nationals. What I am asking for are recommendations from each adult club member based on positive experiences in your area. I will then compile a list and forward it on to the board for consideration in selecting future convention and national judges. I am looking for this information in a timely manner. As a club, we need to make a recommendation for a judge for the 2016 ARBA Convention in San Diego, and would like to make certain that we request a judge that meets our members needs. You may have already received an email from me, if you have please reply. If you did not receive an email I do not have an address for you so, please respond by email to: thebrownrabbitry@gmail.com or by U.S. Mail to Jim Brown, 2177 West End Road, Bath, PA 18104 Thank you - Jim Brown District 7, Shannon Whitney, NY Everyone is getting ready for the winter here! So far it's been a great fall and the weather has

Double BIS for Luke Teaford Sept, 26, 2015 in Easton Md. Introducing new Pal Breeder Bianca Haering. Sweepstakes We had some issues getting a few show reports sorted due to the process we were using. We have updated that process and I am told the last report is on the way to Carolyn so we should be posting the results within the month on the website. I personally apologies on this delay! Cathy. My name is Bianca, Haering I was born and raised in Frankfurt/Germany. That is where I met my husband Karl in 2004. 2005 he had to go back to the states again due to his military orders. After he finished his training I was able to follow him in June 2005. We lived 1.5 years in Belton/Missouri. 2007 we had the chance to move to Fairbanks/Alaska. So we packed everything including 2 dogs and moved. Now 8 years later we are still living in Alaska and loving it. We have now dogs, cats, goats, chickens and since 2 years I am raising rabbits. We are both animal lovers as you might can tell and our goal is to be self-sufficient as possible. A lot of people here have vegetable gardens and livestock. We do go hunting and fishing when the time allows. Summers in Alaska are great. Nothing can beat 24 hrs day light. And yes we do sleep once in a while ;) In the winter it can be a challenge especially for us humans, the water just freezes way to fast by 50 below. I started with mixed rabbits for mostly meat. 2014 I brought English Spots up to Alaska and at this year s convention I was able to pick up my first Palominos and even my husband picked out his first own rabbits (Harlequins). We are just finishing our heated barn. Alaska can be limited with supplies but I would not change it for the world. Shows are very limited as well. 2 are an 8 hours drive from our town away and 2 are in Fairbanks

ARBA Convention 2015 We had a great showing of Palominos in Portland this year, we missed some faces but also had some new faces showing. 72 Palominos were shown in open and 9 in youth. Secretary s Thoughts It has been a very busy fall here in Eastern WA. It so great to have convention just a 6 hour drive away this year. I am so glad so many of our members were able to make the trip out to the Northwest, it was a little wet but that is why it is so green. Terri King will be taking over the merchandise for the Palomino club, she has some shirts and aprons at this time and will research any items you would be interested in. Please contact Terri at terriking3499@gmail.com for more information. Club shirts and aprons are a great way to promote your breed and club. This will be Harold (JR) s last newsletter, James Brown will be taking over the newsletter after the first of the year. Please get Jim any news you have. We love pictures so please send them to the brownrabbitry@gmail.com We have issued over 200 Palomino Club sanctions this year, great numbers of Palomino s are showing across the country. This newsletter will be posted on website, emailed to those I have addresses for and mailed to the rest, printing and mailing averages about $150 per issue, so will be in black and white. I want to give a special thank you to Sharon Pellham who sold some very nice rabbits this spring and summer. I was lucky enough to bring home a wonderful junior buck this spring, who has matured in to a beautiful Senior animal and I was so excited to tell Sharon that he took Best of Breed at Convention this year. Thank you Miss Sharon!!!!!! Hope to see you at a show soon, showing our wonderful Palominos. Expiring or Expired memberships I have been struggling getting membership renewals back in. Mr. Jaraczewski enjoyed raising rabbits for over thirty years and still missed them at least in the summer according to his son John. He enjoyed the hobby and the friends he made showing Palominos. Mr.Jaraczewski worked to improve the wonderful color we now enjoy on the lynx variety. He and his son worked on and organized the current guidebook. This edition is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Wayne Jaraczewski.
