Animal Farm Chapter 4-6 Questions and Answers

Chapter 4

1. What do Snowball and Napoleon do to encourage the spread of Animalism? They sent out pigeons to mingle with animals on other farms and talk up the rebellion. 2. Who are Frederick and Pilkington? What are the names of their farms? Describe each farmer and the condition of his farm. The neighboring farmers. Frederick is tough, shrewd, drives hard bargains; his farm, Pichfield, is small and well-kept. Pilkington is an easy-going easy-going; his farm, Foxwood, is large, overgrown, worn-out.

3. In what ways do the humans try and stop the spread of Animalism They start by spreading rumors; then Mr. Jones and other men from surrounding farms attack Animal Farm. 4. Where does Snowball get his ideas for defending Animal Farm? He read books by general Julius Caesar on battle campaigns.

5. Describe how the animals are able to successfully defend the farm against the humans. The pigeons pooped on them; the geese pecked at the ankles; the sheep, Benjamin, Muriel, and Snowball physically attack and push them around; the pigs, cows, and horses circled them from behind and performed a surprise attack; Boxer was striking out with his powerful hooves and thought he killed a young stable boy 6. Which animals are injured or killed during the battle? A sheep is killed.

7. How do the animals celebrate their victory? They place a gun at the base of the flag and agree to fire it 2 times a year: on Oct 12 for the Battle of Cowshed and on Midsummer s Day to mark the original rebellion. 8. What part does Napoleon play during the Battle of the Cowshed? What do you think this says about him? He plays no part. He doesn t really care about the animals and what s best for them, only what s best for himself.

Chapter 5

1. Who disappeared? Where was she later seen? Mollie; she was later seen pulling a dog cart across town 2.What happened at crucial moments in Snowball's speech? The sheep would interrupt and start blurting 4 legs good, 2 legs bad 3. What did Snowball want to build? What did he promise it would do for the farm and the animals? He wanted to build a windmill which would supply electric power, light and warm the stalls in winter, do many of the animal s jobs for them, decrease the labor and shorten the work week.

4. What did Napoleon do to Snowball's plans? Why do you think he did this Napoleon urinated on the plans. Possible Responses: he was jealous, he wanted to destroy them so the windmill could never be built, he wanted the animals to support him, he didn t like not being the powerful and popular leader, etc 5. What happened to Jessie and Bluebell's puppies Napoleon had raised them to be vicious, violent dogs who would do his every bidding.

6. What happened to Snowball? Why? The dogs chased him off of the farm because Napoleon wanted to be the sole pig in power; he threatened Napoleon s power. 7. What did Napoleon announce would come to an end? What/Who did he replace it with? The Sunday meetings; he replaced them with a Committee of Pigs who would make the decisions for the farm. 8.Boxer now has 2 slogans. What are they? I will work harder and Napoleon is always right.

9. Why did Napoleon claim Snowball s windmill idea for his own? Possible Responses: He knew it was good idea that the animals supported; he believed it would make the farm more profitable; he knew that it was popular with the animals so it would therefore increase his popularity. 10.What does Squealer tell the animals will happen if they do not do what Napoleon wants? He said Jones would come back. 11. Napoleon is now using fear to get what he wants from the animals. Give 1 example of how. Possible answers: the dogs will attack; he chases the great Snowball away so he could get rid of anyone; he has Squealer threaten with the return of Jones

Chapter 6

Napoleon announced that the animals would now have to work on 1) Sunday or risk having their 2) rations reduced. The animals begin construction on the 3) windmill, breaking the large boulders by dropping them down into the 4) quarry. 5) Boxer works harder than any animal on the farm. He lives by his two mottos: I will work 6) harder and 7) Napoleon is always right.

Napoleon creates a new policy that will allow the farm to 8) trade with human beings. He hires a human solicitor named 9) Mr. Whymper to help in the dealings with the human beings. The pigs have also moved into the 10) farmhouse and are even believed to be sleeping in beds. In order to get away with this, they change one of the Commandments to No animal shall sleep in a bed with 11) sheets. 12) Squealer explains this to the animals by saying that beds are not evil they all sleep in some form of a bed - but sheets are evil because they re a 13) human creation.

One night, a 14) storm blows through Animal Farm and completely destroys the windmill. Napoleon tells the animals that 15) Snowball is to blame for the destruction. Napoleon places a 16) death sentence on Snowball. He gives a 17) speech encouraging the animals to rebuild the windmill, finishing with the statement, Long live 18) Animal Farm.
