Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland 2 Saving the Lives of Portland s Pets

What is ASAP 3 Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (ASAP) Coalition of local animal shelters, county animal services agencies, and professional veterinary associations Founded in 2006 Four counties: Clackamas, Multnomah, Washington, Clark (WA)

Founding Organizations Alliance for Contraception in Cats & Dogs Cat Adoption Team Clackamas County Dog Control Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon Humane Society for Southwest Washington Multnomah County Animal Services Oregon Humane Society Portland Veterinary Medical Association Southwest Washington Veterinary Medical Association Washington County Animal Services/Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter 4

ASAP Mission 5 Our mission is to end the euthanasia of social, healthy or treatable dogs and cats in our local shelters by collaborating on spay/neuter programs, educational and outreach efforts and the promotion of humane alternatives for feral cats.

The power of many vs. one Why a Coalition? Different organizations = different strengths Tackling issues collaboratively and regionally for the biggest impact Long-term, meaningful solutions rather than quick fixes 6 Input and support from public and private shelters as well as our local veterinarians

ASAP Initiatives Working together to save lives Spay & Save targeted s/n program for cats Transfers between ASAP shelters Collaborative Adoption Promotions Community Statistics Asilomar Accords Coalition grants 7

Spay & Save 8 Income targeted s/n program for owned and feral cats Goal: 10,000 cats above 2008 community baseline, sustained over 5 years, 30% drop in intake 34,000 cats altered since February 2010 Cat Intake declined 25% from 2010 to 2012

ASAP Transfers 9 1,500 2,000 transfers between shelters every year Assistance for medical, behavioral or space reasons Bear - arrived at Clackamas County shelter with skin problems after a history of neglect. He was transferred to the Oregon Humane Society for care and treatment and by June last year, he was adopted.

ASAP Adoption Promotions 10 ASAP-wide adoption deals Especially crucial during kitten season and other high intake times Benefits for adopters larger selection of animals, learn that their local shelter is part of a wider community life-saving effort

Key Asilomar Statistics 11 Tracked shelter stats since 2006 Using the same definitions for medical and behavior categories Better understanding how to make a difference for the region Tracking against our coalition goals

Key Asilomar Statistics 12 Total Cats & Dogs 2012 Live Release Rate - 85% - Euthanasia per 1,000 human population 3 2006 Live Release Rate - 62% - Euthanasia per 1,000 human population 8.9 Since 2006 (formation of ASAP): Total euthanasia decreased by 65%

Key Asilomar Statistics Continued Since 2010 - zero euthanasia of healthy cats and dogs. Adoptions increased 13% since 2006 to 19,339 Total Intake has declined from 44,435 in 2006 to 33,711 in 2012 - a 24% decrease Intake from the Public declined from 37,283 in 2006 to 25,307 in 2012 - a 32% decrease 13

Coalition Grants 14 PetSmart Charities subsidizing targeted (public assistance & feral) s/n surgeries above baseline ASPCA one year grant to fund the Neighborhood Pet Project, a pilot initiative providing free services to cats and Pit Bulls in a microtargeted area with the goal to reduce intake from that area to zero project helped 945 pets live happier, healthy lives. Fund for Second Nature subsidizing efforts to reduce the noshow rate amongst S&S clients, including free surgeries and free vaccines

Key to Success Community focused, not agency focused No bash, No trash Membership Ground rules Decision making authority Representation Voting 15

Then Along Came Money Independent or hosted How are funds accounted for Spending decision making process 16

Maddie s Lifesaving Award May 2013 Six ASAP sheltering organizations were awarded the prestigious Maddie s Fund Community Lifesaving Award totaling $1,000,000 This award is only given to communities that have saved all healthy shelter dogs and cats for multiple years and can demonstrate the ability to sustain this adoption guarantee for healthy pets in the future The community further needs to exemplify strength in collaboration and strategic initiatives that could serve as a model in other communities across the US This award will help fund future ASAP collaborative initiatives to benefit shelter animals 17
